L.T. says he can play four more years

NFL_tomlinson1.jpgIn a press conference that was as much about the future as it was about the past, running back LaDainian Tomlinson predicted that he can play pro football for four more years.

Of course, before he plays even one more year, he needs to find a team that will pay him the kind of money he expects — and that will give him the kind of playing time he thinks he deserves.

Contrary to his prior suggestion that he wants to play for a contender, Tomlinson said, “I don’t have to win now,” and that he’d be happy to join a team that’s on the rise and headed in the right direction.

(For some reason, the Browns came to mind when I heard him say those words.)

This subtle massage to L.T.’s comments from Monday could be an indication that he prefers to be a key player for an up-and-coming team and not a bit player for a championship team.  And it’s clear that Tomlinson still believes he can play at a high level.

He attributed his decline since winning the MVP award in 2006 to the departure of coach Marty Schottenheimer, which given the arrival of Norv Turner resulted in a shift away from the run.  But Tomlinson had only 19 fewer touches in 2007, so we’re not sure that the dip was the result of a decision not to give him the ball.  Still, L.T. was borderline defiant:  “Did I get old the year after I won the MVP?  I don’t think so.”

Tomlinson declined to talk about any of the teams he might have heard from.  In our view, however, one thing is clear — if teams agree that Tomlinson can play for four more years, he won’t be on the shelf for four more days.

Unless, that is, Tomlinson wants more money and playing time than any interested teams currently are willing to give him.

  1. 4 more years?? Where in Canada or Europe?
He couldn’t play last year. Hang them up LT your DONE!
    Whiney baby!

  2. I think I can play the next four years in the NFL, too.
And I think L.T. and I are about equally accurate in our assessments.

  3. This guy is woefully deluded and arrogant, and it’s getting embarrassing for him. The good news for him is that he’ll probably never realize it, so his ignorance will keep him blissful.

  4. Please don’t go to the Patriots LT2. You’re better than that. Packers seem like a good fit. Explosive offense, no clear cut starter.

  5. “Browns” and “headed in the right direction” in the same sentence? Only if a “are not” is in between them.
Sorry Drew Carey, but Cleveland SUCKS.

  6. I wonder what L.T. could do if he landed in Washington and played for Shanahan.
I would draft him in my fantasy league and you probably should too if he ends up there.

  7. I’ve never heard of anyone before who thought that highly as himself as this totally out of touch “classy” player.

  8. As much as I’d like to see the Browns repent for their mistake of not drafting Tomlinson a decade ago and sign him, he has shown that he does not coexist well with a scat back type of runner which he had in Darren Sproles and would have in Jerome Harrison in Cleveland.

  9. Why would the Browns come to mind as a team headed in the right direction?
They have no real option at QB, below average WR’s, a good O-line, and a promising young RB…
About the only thing on their offense headed in the right direction is their RB!

  10. Sometimes Mike, sometimes, you hit it dead on. Who really would want to pay a RB until they’re 34 at the money he thinks he can get? That’s one of the reasons he left SD, he told them he would not rework the contract and accept less money. In order to get the years, and the money, some team will have to evaluate what happened the last two years as a result of different offensive philosophies combined with declining talent, poor line blocking, whatever. It might be a cold slap in the face for LT especially if there’s no games 2011, another year older. He’ll be lucky to get one year, option for the second pending if they play or not, or pro-rated over however many games are played.

  11. As much as I’d like to see the Browns repent for their mistake of not drafting Tomlinson a decade ago by signing him, he has shown that he cannot keep his production level up by sharing carries with another running back. He would be in the same kind of backfield in Cleveland with the same kind of scat back type runner (Jerome Harrison) as he had in San Diego (Darren Sproles). Go Holmgren Browns 2010!

  12. 2006————5.2 YPC
    2007————4.7 YPC
    2008————3.8 YPC
    2009————3.3 YPC
Imagine what his YPC would be in 4 years.
Dude just doesn’t get it, he’s done.

  13. Talking about what he’s going to do.
You can take LT out of the Chargers, can’t take the Chargers out of LT apparently.

  14. What he means is that he can *sign a contract* for 4 more years. He hasn’t *played* since 2006.
Oh, and what exactly did LT win for the Bolts?
Anybody who tells you they are classy is classless.

  15. This guy cant accept reality, long live the most durable back of all time… Emmitt Smith..
Sure he cant spell .. lol.. but this guy did it for so many years

  16. Hey Florio,
What does the little guy on your shoulder that whispered “the Browns” in your ear look like? Is it Rosenthal? Remember, that same little guy whispered Redskins in your ear when you were predicting Super Bowl teams.

  17. Great player at one time. Delusional player at this time.
Wherever he ends up I’m sure he will continue to own the Raiders. Even if its in the UFL.
Any minute now Joe from Toronto is gonna chime with how classy LT is and then ask him to GFH.
    In 3…2…1…

  18. Ya so can Jim Brown. This guy needs to realize he’s done as a featured RB… Their was only one LT and he played for the Giants!

  19. He has not played for the last two years and 4 more is wishful thinking. He would be fun to watch with the Saints though. I think his greed will deny him that opportunity though.

  20. Dear Buffalo Bills,
Trade Marshawn Lynch for a draft pick and sign LT. Fred Jackson and LT would be siiiiiiick!

  21. “Did I get old the year after I won the MVP? I don’t think so.”
Was Shawn Alexander in the NFL two years after winning the MVP? Didn’t think so.
    Running backs get old fast.

  22. “He attributed his decline since winning the MVP award in 2006 to the departure of coach Marty Schottenheimer, which given the arrival of Norv Turner resulted in a shift away from the run.”
I call complete and total BS. Emmitt Smith led the league in rushing twice with Turner as offensive coordinator and Stephen Davis (Stephen freaking Davis!) won the NFC rushing title with Turner as head coach/offensive coordinator. Coaching philosophy wasn’t the problem for Tomlinson.
Maybe if Tomlinson had averaged more than 3.3 yards per carry last season, he would have gotten more opportunities.

  23. He can play 15 more years.
Doesn’t mean someone will pay him to do it, or if they do, that it will be worth it.

  24. Yall hypocritical fu$$s. I know all of yall was talking about how this guy was a monster before. The guy has an average season and now he’s done. Bunch of bandwagon fags. L.T will continue to get the job done and contribute to some team. Best of luck L.T

  25. 9 straight years of 10 or more TD’s.
Nobody else thats played the game can say that. For that fact alone someone will take a chance on him. He can still find the endzone. Maybe only from inside the 5 but he can still do it.
His 12 rushing TD’s last year was equal or better than 14 TEAMS last year.
I dont think he’s done. He aint gonna win the rushing title but he’s gonna score more TD’s.

  26. LT is SOFT period!
Nothing makes me happier than to watch him cry!
You know when a guy says I will go to war with that guy….or that guy is the one you want in the trenches with you….They are NOT talking about Tomlinson!!!!!!

  27. His decline happened the minute Lorenzo Neal was released.
I know who is interested…his name is Jerry Jones.
It will be Dallas with Felix and LT getting 12 touches each…..the other team interested are Seattle and Tampa. It pays to work at Cowboys stadium

  28. When Tomlinson says that, why do I think of him, sitting on the bench in a big playoff game, helmut on, with a facemask looking like he is an extra, waiting for his call in a remake of “The Fly”.
He has done little good since then to change that image.

  29. Folks, show some dignity. The guy is a sure HOF. He either will or he won’t get what he wants going forward; but he’s got every right to try to get there. Yeah, he’s probably done as anything but a role player; but he gets to find that out for himself.

  30. LT is a typical charger. Claims he’s better then he really is and has no class. Again I ask how did this guy ever get confused with someone who is classy? He has called other teams classless after loosing to them. He has sat on the sideline pouting when things aren’t going his way and know he’s blaming his former headcoach for his decline.

Ive noticed you post this exact message every time Florio does a blurb on Tomlinson.
Have you memorized this and type it each time or do you just wait and paste when the chance arrives?
    Just curious…

  32. What is LT going to play for the next four years ? Checkers? Monopoly ? Golf ? Iowa Rules Basketball? Perhaps Scrabble? Here’s the first word he should play – “Finished”.
Just what the Browns need after getting rid of Jamal Lewis- another used up running back who gets 3,3 yards per carry. No thanks

  33. He said he could play four more years? Don’t forget at the begining of the season he was also saying he was better then Adrian Peterson.

  34. The only owner in the NFL crazy enough to pay the money L.T. is lookin for is my beloved owner, Al Davis. If L.T. asked for a 3 year $20 million dollar contract, Al would say hell no. Let’s make it a 4 year deal worth $ 85 million. Makes no sense to the rest of us, but it makes perfect sense to Al and I guess that’s why we are where we are.

The league average for the NFL in 2008 and 2009 was 4.2 yards per carry.
LT averaged 3.8 YPC in 2008 and 3.3 in 2009.
Those are two below average seasons….one is remarkably so. The most recent one.

  36. Poor LT, he really thinks he’s still the same guy that won the MVP in ’06. This guy’s been done the last two years, now all of a sudden he’s got four more years in the tank?

  37. 4 more years. He couldn’t even play the last 2 or 3 seasons fully. He’s got to be joking. He’ll say anything for a pay day.

  38. It’s pretty clear he isn’t the same runningback he used to be. But take away a commitment from running, and any runningback is going to falter. People need to realize that the #1 reason for a lack of a running game in San Diego is because of a soft O-line. The San Diego offense is a pass first offense, that only uses the run to set up the pass, not with the intention of being successful running. And although Emmitt won rushing titles with Norv(which LT also did), keep in mind a coordinator does not dictate a team’s philosophy: the coach does. Also, to say that LT hasn’t “played” since 2006 is ignorant, especially since he also won the rushing title in 2007. That’s basically saying all the RB’s who finished below him(every RB in the NFL) was garbage that year, including that guy in Minnesota. And since everyone here seems to “know” sooo much, name which runningbacks won the rushing title one year, and exceeded their performance the next. I can only name Emmit and Barry improving on two of their rushing titles(Emmitt improving on his TD’s but not yards in ’94 after winning it in ’93), and Edgerrin James beating his ’99 rushing title with his ’00 rushing title. This isn’t Madden where a player easily bests his career year. It’s rare for players to follow up a career year with an even better one.

  39. big LT fan but he just needs to realize that he is human.
he says “did i get old a year after I won the MVP”
well he definitely got a year older, he still won the rushing title in 07 it wasnt until the injury in the playoffs and the following season where he really started to decline.
It makes no sense that his yards per carry would drop to 3.3 ypc in one of the most feared passing offenses in the league, If he was still able to play at a level comparable to before 2007. He routinely dominated defenses when he was all the chargers had offensively You could say its because he got less touches, but saying that if he got more carries his ypc would increase is ridiculous. Its not like the 4 carries a game that he didn’t get were going to be anything different than the one and two yard carries he had racked up all game.

  40. he takes care of his body, does not party, has had a few injuries and some of the tread is worn on the tire but make no mistake, a world class athlete like lt can pull a surprise when everyone thinks there’s nothing left in the tank.

  41. “jvn says:

four years? more like bore years”
No I will not make out with you!
    *Hoping someone gets that reference*

  42. “This subtle massage to L.T.’s comments from Monday…”
Maybe LT will get a happy ending after all…
TFBuckFutter – I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  43. “Did I get old the year after I won the MVP? I don’t think so.”
You really didn’t, however your O-line was injured quite a bit.
Go to the Browns, they can open some holes for you and Harrison.

  44. I don’t think LT jr is done. In fact I think he could be a good short yardage back for a couple of seasons. Will he put up the kind of numbers he has in the past? No way but he can still contribute. Hes putting himself out there for any potential team. His yards per carry dropped so did Darren Sproles to 3.7, I guess he should retire and not try and make more money as well. I don’t think his decline is all his fault, poor blocking could have something to do with it. Losing his stud FB Neal a few years ago would hurt any back in the league.

Hey, you wanna go feed that donkey some beer? Get it all messed up?

  46. From 2006 -2009 the SD line was never as good. They still don’t have a great RT and the C has been injured almost every year. This year they had 3 starters out at one time.
So its part that and part LT has had injuries the last few years. He could probably last 4 yrs if used on a team that likes 2 backs.
TH OL was awesome for a while with Shane Olivea at RT before his drug problem. AJ likes to give UDFA and low round draft choices like RT Clary years to prove themselves while the rest of the team suffers. It is AJ’s fault not Norv’s.

  47. Team on the rise ???? Browns?????? What??
Why would that come across your media mind, Florio???
There was nothing in your (or anybody else’s) reporting this season, would seem to suggest any optimism.
Please don’t jump on the Browns (Mangini) bandwagon.
    We don’t want you.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Florio spends all of last year trashing the Browns and Mangini- sometimes using a crowbar to wedge some kind of insult into a story when one wasn’t even called for- and now he wants to “admit” the the Browns are on the rise or headed in the right direction? Why? because Mike Holmgren showed up (but hasn’t done anything yet)?
What a joke. Florio– and all you other douchebags who salivate when seeing *any* story even loosly related to the Browns that you can make your shitty attempt to contribute a “funny” comment to– just please stay off the bandwagon. Yes, they’ve been a crap team for 10 years (though they went to the playoffs in 2002 at 9-7 and missed them in 2007 at 10-6), but the Browns **have** made the playoffs in every single decade they’ve existed. …So unless history no longer repeats itself, they are due to become a contender again sometime in the next couple years. When that happens, PLEASE do not begin to compliment them or call them a “dark horse” or a “sleeper”, etc. really. We don’t need you and sure as hell don’t want you.
    Thanks.

  49. Sometimes these players are friggin delusional. Both he and Westbrook are DONE. Get over it. When you decide to be a running back you have to know your shelf life is in the range of 4-6 good years and 2-3 mediocre ones. Thats it.

  50. Whats up with the anti-Browns sentiment? I would definitely say a team who couldn’t score a touchdown at the beginning of a season that ends it’s season on a 4 game win streak that includes breaking offensive single game records and sending 2 guys to the pro bowl up and coming a bit of an understatement. Especially when that team has 11 draft picks and a superbowl winning coach running it, in a division where they beat the top team in their division during their streak. I guess that makes too much sense.

  51. Yes, LT is on the downside of the performance curve. However, considering all the other factors that could have quickened his slide, coupled w the fact that he does take good care of himself, he might be able to get a short, performance-ladened contract from some team.
He has to believe in himself if he is going to have any success in the future. Without that confidence these guys wouldn’t be getting paid to play…they would be sitting and blogging w us!
Seriously, if LT thinks he can contribute to some team, he has the right to try. (Hell, I have my boss convinced that I’m worth the money I’m making) 🙂
    Good luck, LT!
