Carroll timed Mays at 4.19

The varying times of USC safety Taylor Mays’ forty-yard dash continue to pour in.

A league source tells PFT that Pete Carroll timed Mays at 4.19. Of course, that time could have had a lot to do with Carroll hoping his former player ran that fast.

And that’s the crux of all these hand-timed measurements. Human error and even bias come into play.

After watching the NFL Network replay of Mays and Jacoby Ford running next to each other -- check the video at 1:10 -- we’re more sure than ever that the “official” times are a crock.

The league has turned the Scouting Combine into big business. Major dollars are made by the network and players, so the league needs to come up with a better standardized and equitable way to measure the forty-yard dash.

Heck, it’s possible Rich Eisen and his bloused shirt actually broke six seconds and we just don’t know.
