Steelers continue special teams spree with Battle

A. Battle.jpgThe Steelers wisely understand their pass-first tendencies didn’t keep them out of the playoffs. Their abysmal special teams were largely to blame.

the team continued to aggressively address the issue by agreeing to a three-year contract with former 49er Arnaz Battle, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.  Safety Will Allen, also a core special teams player, was signed earlier in the day.

Battle played under new Pittsburgh special teams coach Al Everest in San Francisco.  He’s an aggressive blocking wideout that can fill Pittsburgh’s fourth receiver role.

Limas Sweed’s future with the team is very much in doubt after his mysterious disappearance late last season.

  1. Well as long as they don’t plan on using him as a return man, he holds the ball like its an angry cat (he fumbles a lot). Thank god for Stefan Logan.

  2. So, when are they going to sign the “Make sure Ben doesn’t rape another girl” guy? It seems like that should be their priority.

  3. It doesn’t take breaking the bank in free agency to vastly improve from one season to the next (see Washington Redskins), it takes signing scrappy players like this to contribute on Special Teams and 3rd and long. Keep up the good work adding depth and bolstering the ST! The core players are already in place….

  4. Good move for special teams. Could be the beginning of the end for Limas.
Oh the Ben rape jokes are so funny….keep the jealousy comin rodstiffington, how many rings does your team have? that’s what i thought

  5. 9-7… miss the playoffs again…..
Now we see what tomlin’s teams are made of.
    watch out for the ravens!!

  6. @this class sucks …
ROFL at the angry cat analogy.
But now you tell us! I was all for bringing him in, but didn’t know about the butterfingers.

  7. Nice moves today to shore up weak special team coverage, while getting some depth at a few positions, and without breaking the bank.
    GO STEELERS!

As long as the ring count is less than or equal to the rape count, Steelers fans are apparently happy.

  9. Yeah he muffs about every third kick that comes at him. That said he is very good at covering kicks and he is a better reciever than people think.

  10. Sweed didn’t disappear… he was on a sabbatical with Bengals WR Jerome Simpson, wherein they discussed what it’s like to be two of the worst draft picks in recent years.

  11. i say they cut Ben anyways. I am a diehard steelers fan but i dont want this deucsh bag quarterbacking my favorite team. let the dennis dixon era begin

  12. Glad we picked up another Special teams player who can add depth at other positions.
Now they need to go get Kirk Morrison.

  13. The Steelers are hoping to strike gold again with a former Niner receiver just like they did with the legendary Cedrick Wilson.

  14. @ Baltimore sports
since there has been no rape count(yet), that goal is easily accomplished.

  15. Every year its something distracking from Ben. I don’t want to hear that the Steelers will never take the likes of TO or Moss. They have their own as their starting QB.

  16. @ Baltimore Sports – as long as the Ravens fans still only have one Super Bowl, linebackers either killing people or pouring bleach on women they are happy, and a perennial 4th quarter choker as a qb they are happy. (see what i did there?)

  17. Florio needs to start a “rape-o-meter” just for Ben. He better make sure it has room for three digits.

hahaha again with the rings. No one gives a crap about your team’s rings.

  19. I’m shocked that the Steelers are finally joining the rest of the world and signing free agents. Letting Cromartie go to the Jets was ridiculous, of course, and I have to think there are still a few good DBs and offensive linemen out there who could come in and help immediately.
Regarding Ben, I don’t have much of a comment about the legalities save for one thought:
I’d sure like to see the Steelers draft Tim Tebow.

  20. So this is what it looks like when a franchise that has been dominant for 20 years winds back down to a mediocre status for a good long spell… Turn out the lights- the party’s over…

  21. I love when I come into a thread and someone already is putting the Baltimorons in their place.. *wipes hands* the work is done here, right @Baltimore Sports?
