PFT Daily: League, Steelers face a dilemma if Ben is charged

The free-agency period has partially obscured the latest legal issue involving Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

But Big Ben’s potential entanglements could lead to high drama in Pittsburgh, if he is ultimately charged with sexual assault in Georgia.

For an explanation of our theories, hypothesis, and stuff we just say to fill time on this point, we give you today’s PFT Daily.

  1. An empty space of nothing Florio? From what I hear he is definitely going to be charged. The girl immediately went to the cops and the people at the hospital have said if she is making this up someone should hand her an Oscar. She dropped out of college immediately…totally is acting like someone that believes she was raped.

  2. Here’s the real question.
Roethlisberger appeared destined for the HoF after winning two Super Bowls and always being anywhere from a competent to very good QB… even if he had finished the rest of his career with an 85.0 rating and only took the Steelers back to the playoffs a couple more times, he was a shoo-in for the Hall-of-Fame (how many QBs that have won, or even went to 2 SBs aren’t in the HoF?)
If he is convicted, how much does this tarnish his legacy? Regardless of what happens to him when he would get out of jail 18 months to 4 years from now, would this keep him out of the Hall-of-fame?
Even if not charged does Roethlisberger become the new face of what’s wrong in the NFL? He’s never been charged but he has put himself in some ridiculously bad situations now: wrecking his motorcycle with no helmet, the rape charges in Las Vegas, and now sexual assault in Ga. It took a long time before Pac-Man was ever convicted of anything, is Ben the new Pac-Man?

  3. Dude owns a house in Milledgeville??? Are you Kidding me??? Dude GROW THE -UCK UP! You know these -oes are looking to get paid! But hey keep the negative attention on them so WE(Bengals) can go 5-1 in the AFC North in 2010…..The lone loss?? @ Ravens…….The fight will come down to Cincy and the Ravens for AFC North Champs…..

  4. If he is charged then suspend this fat, stupid, ignorant a**hole. The only reason anybody remotely cares about this bum is because he can throw a football. Otherwise he’d be in jail for some crime sucking on twinkies and who-knows-what-else.

  5. This is a criminal investigation. Of course, it has a more serious feel. The McNulty accusation has no criminal ramifications. Certainly Steelers fans are angry and upset. With a civil suit pending, Ben should have been keeping a low profile this off season; instead he was out drinking and partying with college kids.
But as of now, we know nothing except that this is not a rape accusation. The details–even more than the decision to charge–will have a tremendous impact on how Ben is perceived by the city and the team.
You’ve made clear in your own articles that the filings in the McNulty case indicate it’s a blatant extortion attempt. While the general public may be willing to burn Roethlisberger at the stake on nothing more than this vague accusation, you know better.
Fortunately, neither the Steelers–nor the NFL–will act until they have the facts of the case.

  6. I have to say I’m sick of all this crap Big Ben has been putting the Steelers through. Yes, hes a solid quarterback..but when you repeatedly give one of the cornerstone organizations a black eye – somethings gotta change.

  7. 2 reasons why the league won’t suspend Roethlisberger:
    1) He’s not black
    and
    2) The NFL is in the Steeler’s back pocket (See superbowl 40 and the scandal involving the team doctor with HGH).

  8. hi –
sixburgh are you pissing your pants yet?
ya think maybe you need to change your handle to sexburgh?

  9. Too bad. Great ballplayer, but he is going to have a tough time with this.
Time to settle down, Ben. What happened to that sweetheart Natlalie Gulbis? If that woman can’t tame the beast….
Seriously, I’m a Patriots fan hoping it turns out okay for the guy.

  10. Well, that interesting. I wonder if Pburg would be interested in Vick or Kolb. Probably not Vick…

  11. This case is going to get punted with no charges……Are the steelers disappointed hell yeah….but they are not going to turn on Ben….. is this steeler “source” the same one that told you that Leftwitch was going to take the job from ben in the middle of their superbowl season…

  12. I agree with Phokus.
I hope Ben changes his last name to: Rapistbuger

  13. 2 reasons why the league won’t suspend Roethlisberger:
    1) He’s not black
    and
    2) The NFL is in the Steeler’s back pocket (See superbowl 40 and the scandal involving the team doctor with HGH).
    Bingo.
The Steelers last two sb’s wins were fixed.
If Ben was black he would be gone.

  14. I say we do the reverse Rooney rule and suspend him. If this guy was black I’m pretty sure that he would be sitting his ass at home right now. Where is the equality?
Either way he is an idiot for putting himself in these situations in the first place.

  15. leopards dont change their spots and as it looks now, neither will Big Ben…. regardless of what the outcome is, he is beginning to look like a sexually deviant monster.. i truly believe it is only a matter of time before he does something regretful. as a

  16. This just in:
Will Ferrell as Big Ben in Old School II “The Milledgeville Incident”

  17. PHOKUS – you are SPOT ON MY MAN
    you speak the truth.
Do you have a link to any discussion of the stealers and HGH?

  18. If he gets charged, he must be suspended. Must be. This incident, or trail of incidents now, falls into Goodell’s characterization of suspendable scenarios. 2-4 games.

  19. If you think the league and the steelers face a dilemna if Ben is charged, think about the dilemna Ben faces if Ben is charged………………..

  20. If the league doesn’t do somehting about this douche bag, whether he’s guilty or not, then that will just empower him to go further next time…..perhaps rape then dispose of the body.

  21. @jwill007
As a bengals fan I can’t blame you for trying to instill some positives with your team. I mean, they last won a single playoff game in, when, the 90s sometime? Last year was an aberration for them – get real man

  22. I have to wonder, if this wasnt Ben engaging in the same behavior as last offseason, purposely, in an attempt to show he is innocent in Nevada. This is certainly speculation by me, but it seems like he is trying to act like he always acted. Using the theory, that a guilty man changes his ways, and an innocent man has no reason to change his habits….
I am not saying that would be a smart move, if it is true, but it might explain how someone who should have been minding his own business, is in this situation again
All of that assumes he is innocent, but one has to wonder when it happens a second time, it is becoming a trend…..he isnt necessarily a serial rapist, but at a minimum, he is clearly a first class asshole, with little respect for women who are meaningless to him. They are simply an object, or so it may seem….

  23. Steelers fans who are calling this 20 year old girl whores only need to look into the mirrors.
Once they collect Little Bens DNA “the party is over”
The more that comes out about how his entourage gathered “their college girl posse” shows what a insecure pervert BR really is.
This is not the beginning of the end for Ben but for the Steelers.
You’ll need those towels to wipe the tears after the Steelers finish in last place BEHIND the Browns.
Couldn”t happen to a better fanbase!!!!!!
    hahahhahahahahaha

  24. Phokus:
C’mon, racist and paranoid all in one take?
I’ll bet you think the moon landing, 9/11, and the holocaust were all faked too – by white people.

  25. Question for all the judges and jurors out there. (Most of you sound like you were actual eyewitnesses.)
Using your logic (or lack thereof) on display here, where’s all the outrage at Carl Edwards’ “attempted murder” of Brad Keselowski in Atlanta last weekend? There’s plenty of evidence in that case, the whole country saw it on national TV, and Edwards so much as admitted it was intentional and premeditated.
So shouldn’t he be given (or not) the same consideration being shown to a guy who hasn’t even had any charges filed against him?
    { /crickets }

  26. Naive people talking about Ben Roethlisberger being suspended. He has bigger issues on his hands right now, like JAIL.

  27. All you Steeler haters need to enjoy this while you can especially Bungles and Baltimoron (knockoff Browns) fans.
You will see who gets the last laugh.

  28. ☻☼CBS, FOX, ESPN, NFLN nbc says:
“I hope Ben changes his last name to: Rapistbuger.”
Personally, I find comfort in the fact that there are still people in this world lame enough to tell a joke that’s been told 10,000 times already.

  29. As a Steelers fan, I will firmly state that:
IF BEN IS INDICTED FOR RAPE (i.e there is sufficient evidence to charge him), THEN HE SHOULD BE SUSPENDED.
To think or say or believe anything else would be a hypocrite.

  30. MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Cautioning the public to avoid rushing to judgment, Georgia authorities said today they continue to investigate allegations that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sexually assaulted a 20-year-old female student.
In an exclusive interview with the Tribune-Review, however, Roethlisberger’s newly hired attorney — prominent Atlanta criminal defense lawyer Edward T.M. Garland — rushed to insist that his client “is completely innocent of any crime.”
“The truth of events will cause this investigation to end without a charge,” said Garland, who has represented other high-profile athletes and celebrities accused of serious crimes, including the murder probe involving Baltimore Ravens’ linebacker Ray Lewis in 2000.
“I’m confident that law enforcement the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the local police and the district attorney will do a thorough evaluation of the facts in this case and that their conclusion will be that no crime was committed,” said Garland.
    *****
Of course I wouldn’t expect his attorney to say anything differently. I am reserving my opinion, but have said a number of times that Ben has to use better judgement and avoid anything that might cause him or the team embarassment. I look forward to everything playing out swiftly, for everyone’s sake.
Lots of little kids posting here that can hide behind IDs and say anything they want to, with having the ability to provide credible comments.

  31. @johnnie m
We’re not naive. Any trial he goes to won’t happen until maybe next year or so – he needs to be suspended this season, not after he’s convicted.
Any trial is remote I would think however. There will be plenty of back door payouts to avoid it.

  32. @ ampat
What will DNA prove? That they had sex. It could have been consentual. Wouldn’t this be the best time to extort money from Big Ben? I think so.
I not saying that he is innocent or guilty. He is definitely stupid for putting himself in this position.

  33. He is going to jail. Even his lawyer’s statement hints of plea bargin. Never says is wasn’t there or didn’t have sex with the girl. “my client did nothing illegal”

  34. @Phukus
Wait, no one has ever told me any valid reason why super bowl 40 was supposedly fixed. Did Willie Parker have jet shoes on when he broke the longest td run in SB history? Or did the refs get paid to not call the Seahawks for the several pass interference calls they got away with? If you really think that Super Bowl was fixed give me some valid reasons, not the usual “Wah! from my couch it looked like Ben did not get in…” despite the fact they won by 11, or “Sobbbb! the refs gave the game to the Steelers!”, despite the evidence that supports plain bad officiating throughout the game. You losers make me sick. As to the HGH scandal, I assume you are referring to the doctor formerly associated with the Steelers who was using HGH on elderly patients for orthopedic purposes. Yeah, you are right he did something illegal, and he should not have got off with the dismissal he was given, if you hate elderly people. The fact is the police investigated and found no connection between HGH and the actual team, but of course jealousy makes some people act like pissy little girls (see all the people who are happy that either A)Ben raped a girl and won’t be playing their team this year or B)Ben is being extorted by a gold-digger from nowhereville, GA).
As to the assumption that Ben would already be facing discipline if he was not white, yeah you are probably right, but that never seemed right to me either. Goodell should let the legal system take it’s course before laying down the law NFL-style.

  35. Stop all this “trend” talk. I’m not saying he’s innocent this time around, but after learning McNulty bragged about having sex with Ben and planned to go to Pittsburgh to run into him, it’s clear the first time around, he was only guilty of sleeping with a crazy person.
Regardless of the outcome this time, there’s no “trend”.
SB40 was fixed? Check out the Patriots “win” over the Raiders before their first SB. Check out how the Vikings got robbed v. the Saints in the most recent NFC Champ game. The refs handed that game to the Saints, who despite getting 5 turnovers, still needed the refs to win.

  36. This is not a racial issue what-so-ever. Let’s leave that topic alone.
This is a man versus a woman issue … he said/she said.
We know she went directly to the hospital and the authorities after “it” happened.
This is a case of a person who feels entitled. That is it.

  37. PFT’s days without an arrest is about to recycle to zero!! The next audible Ben calls will be for the shampoo instead of the soap in the shower in jail!!!

  38. Is he guilty of a crime? Hard to say, but hopefully the evidence will settle the question.
Is he guilty of poor judgment, idiotic & compulsive behavior, and being so self centered that he repeatedly is putting his team and the NFL in a terrible position? Of that there can be no doubt what so ever.
He needs to be held accountable even beyond the legal findings if there is to be any hope that he will ever wake up. The evidence may tell us it is already too late.

  39. I have to love morons who play the race card. In a league dominated by African Americans, such talk shows little intellect. Why not climb back under your rock?
I also have to laugh about the “fixed” commentaries. When I read that, I have to wonder if the writer ever played a down of organized football beyond Pee Wee ball. Fixed? Are you insane?
I don’t know anything about the legalities of this issue. I said the same thing about Ray Lewis years ago. I will never know. It’s a shame that whether white or black, athletes live by a different code than the rest of us. That’s all.
I think Mr.Florio has it dead on target about how we feel about Ben in this town right now. I wouldn’t mind seeing the birds send Michael Vick this way, and fast.

Brian France was hoping for all this when he relaxed certain rules this year before the Daytona 500.
NASCAR opted to do nothing (3 race probation?) to Edwards for the Atlanta bump!

  42. Kind of interesting, seeing all the RapesBurgh fans playing defense on these threads after cluttering up the Patriots threads for several years with cheating accusations. You have been enabling this total meathead for years. He causes a traffic accident and crushes his empty melon, and says he still won’t wear a helmet. Now he is accused of molesting women twice in a year.
Lets see now, molesting girls and taking PED’s as a team, or filming coaches signals from the sidelines instead of the coaches box. Its clear which is more disgusting.
Drop dead Pittsburgh, you deserve this. You will forever be known as the enablers of a serial molester, like it or not. How does our ass taste PGH?

  43. CBass , I did check out the Patriots first win over the Raiders, it was a Viniteri FG in the snow that was set up by a rule that STILL EXISTS TODAY.
Refs don’t hand games to teams, they call it as they see it, whether we agree or not.
Do yourself a favor and don’t post stupid inuendos.
By your screen name I can guess you are another Raiders fan blaming the misforunes of your pathetic franchise on everyone else.
Thanks for your 2011 #1 draft choice which is sure to be a top ten . TUCK THAT!!!

  44. To eagle_fan34, what the hell are you talking about? His lawyer said that his client “is completely innocent of any crime.” Can you read? Are you that damn dumb? Sorry, you are an eagles fan, that make your stupidness understandable.
Sheesh! As a Steeler fan, as I have said I am reserving final judgement to see what the REAL facts are here. Obviously, none of you know the real facts, nor do I. If he is found guilty of a criminal act, I would have no problem if they released him, and I am sure they would. Life would go on nicely with or without Ben for any true Steeler fan.
So hold your horses until we see what the investigation turns up. Then, all you little kids can go back to making dumb jokes and bashing while hiding behind your IDs.
WAKE UP BEN, DO YOURSELF AND ALL US STEELER FANS A FAVOR AND QUIT GIVING MORONS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT OTHER THAN YOUR FOOTBALL PROWESS.

  45. Deb, Florios’Lawyer, Igottz5onit…excellent posts. I don’t believe he did anything criminal…but…he is guilty of an overflow of hubris on and off the field. If it wasn’t for Ben, Arians would be gone. If he has a blitz coming at him, what does he do…duck and run and hang onto the ball too long so in case he found someone open he’d be the MAN. He wanted a taller wide receiver. And Tomlin is not hard enough on him. Same thing off the field. He wants what he wants, ignoring and not caring about repercussions. Pride goeth before a fall.

  46. 26 years without a Super Bowl win. People could argue every SB was fixed. You can’t go back and change the game, so quit living in the past (to quote all of those who made fun of us before winning SB 40).
As for Ben, he has become a distraction in the off season. I’m annoyed at his behavior. Last year could be called a fluke because of what happened, but now this new issue makes it hard for me to believe he doesn’t have a problem.
I cannot defend his stupidity for going to a college bar. He’s 28 years old and needs to start acting like a franchise QB. He want to act like a “regular guy” but I know $102 million worth of reasons he’s not. He should be smart about his behavior and he’s not–seriously, with a looming sexual assault case, why go to a college bar? He’s becoming a liability for the Steelers organization.
As a woman, I cannot watch my team play knowing that my star QB takes advantage of women. I know other players have had problems with domestic violence, but once they got caught/got in trouble, it never happened again. Ben didn’t learn from his mistake. Whether he is guilty or not, my opinion of him has changed. I want a mature and responsible QB. I want one that stays out of trouble, and for the next few years, puts his family, team and fans first. In his last press conference, he mentioned his family, and I am sure his mom and dad aren’t proud of his cavorting with 20 year olds. I know the Rooneys and Coach Tomlin aren’t happy about his behavior. I know I’m not.

  47. Thank you Deb for putting it so succinctly. All the rest is pure conjecture and speculation. Going out partying with college kids acting like you’re the BMOC, well, that you brought on yourself. Intelligence = NOT Big Ben.

  48. @Igottz5onit
“…but of course jealousy makes some people act like pissy little girls ”
Why do you stick-up-the a** steeler homers all think your team is some invincible machine that everybody is scared of. They lost to freakin’ chiefs, browns, and raiders last year.
    Pathetic pal!

  49. About time the fans and hopefully the league will see Pig Ben for what he really is, a PUNK rapist !

  50. If the acusation is true, I feel sorry for the young lady. If it is not true I still think Ben was very stupid to be out doing this. I also wish his sponsors would drop him. Maybe this would show him he is not the mighty king he thinks he is.

  51. @Titan Pride
The whole league raped the knockoff Oilers (aka Titans) last year and made you like it.

  52. Steelers fans who are calling this 20 year old girl whores only need to look into the mirrors.
What was a 20 year old barhopping looking for? How did she get into these bars. What was her blood alcohol level? Why did “SHE” invite Ben into ladies room? This chick has slut written all over her. Idiots saying Ben is a rapist are the same people who wish they could go to a bar and get a women and wish they were not married!

  53. It was opposite day. The girl was supposed to say YES if she didn’t want to get raped.

Great post!!! I hate this city (yeah, I live in Pgh, hopefully not for much longer, trying to get a transfer out of here) At least some of the idiots around here have STFU about the Pats for a while. No one has come to my desk to talk shit in days.

  56. @nflisking
yeah we had an off-year and still finished 9-7 and have won 2 super bowls and not had a losing record since 2003-2004. That certainly is nothing to be proud of.

  57. @wally world
The difference is this. Ben has not been convicted of rape. All teams used PEDs in the 1970s. Rodney Harrison just got caught using them a few years ago. The New England Patriots were CAUGHT videotaping.
At this time, I would say the Cheatriots are the most disgusting.

  58. Jealousy is a form of flattery. You guys can all #$tch and moan about the Steelers all you want, but until you won (6) trophies there is no argument. What’s next Super Bowl IX was fixed because of the Immaculate Reception.
Ben is clearly out of control and guilty or not has already tarnshed his career. If Ben does get arrested it will not be the end of the Steelers. It will hurt, but they will pick up the pieces and come back to winning again.

  59. @WallyWorld …
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve never gone onto a Pats thread and talked smack about cheating–and for the most part, I’ve slammed those that did. But why would you say Pittsburgh deserves this? If Ben is innocent, then imagine what he and his family are going through. Yeah, it’s stupid for a high-profile athlete to get himself into these situations, but stupidity doesn’t deserve this outcome. If he’s guilty, it means a young woman was traumatized in the worst way. How can you take pleasure in any of this for any reason?
If you want to argue superiority, try demonstrating superior character.

  60. Look, athletes are meat heads for the most part. And as a Cowboys fan I’ve had to endure my share of both off and on the field distractions that become tabloid fodder so that I have to hear others ridicule us fans as if we are a part of the problem.
BUT, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR STEELER’S QB?
Hasn’t he learned avoidance? Doesn’t he have anyone around him that can point him toward the path of less controversy?
He’s human. He needs to blow off some steam and chill. I get it. And as a sports celeb, he is going to be a target. But I just thought he was smarter.

  61. While I want to believe there’s a chance he’s innocent, everything I’ve heard from people who knew the guy leads me to believe this isn’t too surprising.
I feel bad for his teammates…guys like Hines and Troy are the real reason I love the Steelers; not Ruthlessbanger.
Having said all of this, I bet Florio’s glad he’s only shot from the chest up so we can’t see him pounding one out to Steelers legal trouble.

  62. Also, time to start looking for a new QB. I know all the redneck Steelers fans will want us to draft Tebow because he’s a good CHRISTIAN AMERICAN BOY who would NEVER DO ANYTHING LIKE THIS!!1
But I’m hoping we can find someone who can actually throw the ball.

  65. @Supersuckers …
From what you hear? Aren’t you in Green Bay or thereabout? So the Millegeville hospital staff and cops are talking to you, are they? Funny, they’re not talking to anyone else. They’ve been amazingly close-mouthed.
I haven’t read any comment from the hospital staff about the girl’s demeanor. Given that anyone talking would be subject to automatic dismissal under HIPAA laws, staffers would be taking a pretty big risk to share their thoughts. Did read something similar to what you’re saying on a gossip site, though. It came from an unnamed source within the police department–which could be the janitor or a receptionist or some guy waiting to be booked into the drunk tank.
As for Ben “definitely” being charged … that remains to be seen. They’re just now arranging their first interviews, asking for DNA, and asking for the security film from the club.
So the girl’s acting like a good rape victim should, huh? And you’re an expert on how rape victims act, are you? You’d be surprised how many rape victims are so detached a casual observer would never notice anything untoward in their behavior. There is no “typical” reaction, doofus.
You can go back to your “Kojak” reruns now.

  66. Im assuming he had sex with two different women, not raped them. They just want to take him to court and scare him so they can get money out of him. Maybe Ben dosen’t like to date, but just have one night stands. I know if I were in his shoes I would do the same. I support you Ben! These women just want your money.

  67. it is very disturbing that non Steelers fans are almost celebrating or hoping this girl was assaulted so the Steelers go down-
You guys are trash. You’re using a potential assault as fodder against the Steelers. That folks is called jealousy.
and 10 to 1 says Ben is guilty of nothing but being borderline retarded.

Deb, you are absolutely right. I am taking NO pleasure in the sexual assault of a girl. The ONLY part of this I find pleasurable is the STFU crow that the PittSnot fans have to eat who HAVE been cruising Patriots boards and threads and have been harassing for 3 years now.
I’m not arguing superiority. I am just enjoying the turnabout.
“Everyone did PED’s in the 70’s.” Sure, and everyone was filming in the 90’s. So, whats your point? If your own coach said it made no difference, believe him.

    ————————————————–
There is no outrage because everyone who follows these events pays attention so they won’t miss the crashes. It’s what they crave. It’s the only reason to go other than watch the guys make a several hundred mile left turn!”
Right, but if you did what Edwards did on your local highway, you’d be spending the next 10 to 20 in the slammer, wouldn’t you?

  70. Pig Ben will be charged. Then we will see just how sincere the Steelers’ brass is.

  71. here’s my theory for what it’s worth.
Big Ben actually died in that motorcycle accident last year. He was resurrected by a guy that looks a lot like Brad Childress. The guy going around committing all these sexual assaults is not Ben. Ben is in a alternate world trying to figure out why he has this compulsion to by only piss colored towels.

  72. Forget about the league – The Steelers have always prided themselves in being a CLASSY organization, and they should be the first ones to step in and do something if he ends up getting charged.

  73. @Wally World
If everyone filmed, the Cheatriots were the only idiots to get CAUGHT along with Rodney Harrison’s PED abuse.

  74. @WallyWorld …
Talking to myself as much as to you. Someone did something really rotten to me when I was critically ill. When the dust settled, I just said, “What goes around comes around.” Found out today that person’s being foreclosed. Have been praying all afternoon not to feel satisfaction over someone else’s troubles. Sometimes it’s hard to take the high road.

  75. Wow! Judging by these comments Ben made a lot of people upset when the Steelers won Super Bowl XL and XLIII.
If the Steelers don’t win the Super Bowl the rest of my life I’ll be happy to be able to say I’ve seen them do it twice in my lifetime. That 2 times more than most of yinz will be able to see in one. 😉

  76. “WallyWorld says:
    @Deb
And why not? Your scumbag organization, from the top on down, broke the rules during “Spygate”, knew what they were doing, than said “So the f*ck what?”
The Patriots*** will go down in history as the single most disgraced franchise in sports history, and that tops the Chicago White Sox in the 1919 World Series.
Have you still not accepted that?

  77. @Steeler4Life
    @Wally World
If everyone filmed, the Cheatriots were the only idiots to get CAUGHT along with Rodney Harrison’s PED abuse.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Actually the Jets were caught the season before, do your homework moron. Wouldn’t want to let the facts get in your way.
And only the Steelers have been outed (by one of their own players in fact) for cheating with PED’s during the 70’s, so give those 4 trophies back.
    Two words – Glass House.

  78. Right, but if you did what Edwards did on your local highway, you’d be spending the next 10 to 20 in the slammer, wouldn’t you?
    ————————————————–
    Of course not.
Every time I do 190 or so on my local highway and run some lane hog off the road I immediately pull over, take my jet pack out of the trunk, fly home and report the car stolen!
By the way. Nice job of truncating my response!

  79. @wallys
yeah they were outed by Jim haslett, who was proven to have made up most of his accounts.

  80. Why are STEALer fans talking about steroid use in the 70’s? Your own team doctor was caught recently with a ton of HGH but it was swept under the rug.

  81. Alright everyone…time to stop hating on Big Ben. Otherwise Deb will be forced to say “Darn It” twice in the same year. I hear she sells Big Ben Beef Jerky for beer money.

  82. Now we know why there’s been a revolving door at the OC postion for the past few years in Pittsburgh… we also now know why the Steelers have been using so much shotgun formation… nobody wants Roethlisberger’s happy hands near or around their goods.
Perhaps the name Roethlisberger is not German for Rapist… but even if innocent the guy has made some incredibly stupid decisions and even if he were to pull another Houdini and come out relatively unscathed again, it will happen again… There is no cure for stupidity and Roethlisberger has always seemed, and now he’s proven to be as stupid as they come.

  83. If this is truly a criminal investigation, then why has the girl lawyered up as well? If it’s a criminal investigation…why would she need a lawyer? Is she already planning her civil lawsuit?

  84. I cannot and will not speak for all Steelers fans, but I, personally, am all Roethlisbergered out. The hero-starved Pittsburgh media created this ego-maniac monster. They worship the ground on which he walks. If the Steelers win 6-3, it was because of Roethlisberger. If the Steelers lose, 7-6, it was because the defense didn’t play well enough. It’s maddening!!! It two Super Bowl appearances, Roethlisberger has thrown a whopping ONE touchdown pass. Think maybe this guy has benefited from a pretty good defense over the years? The point is: Whether he’s guilty or innocent, Roethlisberger is no longer an asset to the team. He has become a liability, a distraction and a cancer within the lockerrom. It’s time that the Rooneys stop allowing their proud and low-key organization be held hostage by a mega ego-maniac. As a Steelers fan, I am willing to our chances with Dennis Dixon.

  85. As a Steelers fan, I must say I gave Ben benefit of the doubt about this civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault-and from all information seen so far, it appears that it is a frivolous lawsuit.
The current sexual assault case in Georgia is potentially much more serious, as the cops are investigating it and it was reported right away. The plaintiff has reportedly left her college to go back to her family, and her attorneys are pleading for privacy. This does not look good for Ben at all-if there is an indictment in this case, he will be suspended by the league for some period of time, and deserves to be suspended. If he is convicted, his career in Pittsburgh is over, as well may be his football career. If the civil suit was the smoke, this new case may be the fire.

  86. Why do people say the squeelers are a class organization? They PUSHED steroids on their players in the 70s!!! Only oakland was worse. Their defense should have been called the STEROID CURTAIN!!!

  87. @CincyAllDaWay …
That was a short post. You must be tired from pumping air into your blow-up doll.

  88. brasho says…
“Now we know why there’s been a revolving door at the OC postion for the past few years in Pittsburgh…”
    Really?
Ben’s had two OCs since his rookie season in ’04: Ken Whisenhunt and Bruce Arians. Whisenhunt left in ’07 to become head coach of the Cardinals and was replaced by Arians who is still Pittsburgh’s OC.
Speaking of someone being proven stupid …

  89. @Steelcurtains …
She’s hired a prominent firm of civil litigators based in Atlanta. Personal injury is one of the firm’s specialties, and the attorneys will work on a contingency basis.
So within 48 hours of the incident and while the police are still investigating, she’s sufficiently recovered from the trauma of a vicious assault to hire the kind of attorneys who pursue civil lawsuits.
Take from that what you will.

  90. There was no rules against ‘roids in the 70’s. I’m pretty sure that every team was guilty of taking them. Maybe, just maybe, the Steelers just owned everyone?
The Hall of Fame called and told me you’re just mad cuz the Steelers styled on your team.

  91. Deb,
I like you. You’re a thinker with compassion, wit, objectivity, are well-reasoned and bonus – a Steeler fan.
Not hitting on you – been with the same girl for most of the last 9 years, but just wanted to say you’re alright.
Sorry to hear you were critically ill — hope it’s all in your rear view mirror.

  92. @Chapnasty2 …
Speaking of ESPN, someone sent me an excellent article from their Web site: “What Was Ben Roethlisberger Thinking?!” by Jemele Hill. It pretty much sums up my thoughts on Ben’s behavior. If the accusations are unfounded, I just hope he gets a chance–and has the sense–to finally wise up.

  93. The police say there was no intercourse. So…why do turds still use Rapistberger handle? Jealousy will get you no Lombardis, diaper stains.

  94. To those who think the Steelers would go out of business should Roethlisberger become unavailable, better think again. The Steelers are a franchise that has won a lot of games with a lot of different quarterbacks over the years: Bubby Brister, Neil O’Donnell, Mike Tomzsak, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox. This isn’t Indianapolis. In Pittsburgh, no one player is bigger than the organization. Should the Rooneys come to their senses, do the right thing and cut ties with Roehtlisberger, you’ll see the resurgence of the Steelers’ stellar defense combined with a strong running game on offense. That’s Steelers Football!!!

  95. @Ravens Macg:
Who on the Steelers’ defensive units of the 1970s used steroids? Maybe 225-pound Jack Lambert? C’mon!!! Give us some names.

  96. All this talk about steriods, fixed Super Bowls, hating the Steelers, firing Ben…most of the anti-Steelers people on here seem to want Ben guilty so they can bash the team and see him suffer. All of you tend to forget that wanting to see Ben guilty also means (in a suck twisted way) that you want that girl to have been assaulted.
You can’t have it both ways–he can’t be guilty and the girl be okay.
I would have hoped from the men here (who probably have daughters, a wife or girlfriend) that I would be reading “I hope he’s not guilty because of what that means happend to the poor girl.” Apparently I was wrong.

  97. @Wick …
Thanks so much! Three-time cancer-survivor, among other things. But if you saw me, I look like I’ve never had a bad day in my life 🙂 Keep all the bad stuff in the rear view!
    @steelersmichele …
Apparently Ben acts like an overgrown frat boy who needs an adult to kick him in the seat of the pants and put him in timeout. But I doubt any of these blowhards really, deep-down, think he’s a sexual predator nor do they care about that girl. This is a chance for them to bash the Steelers and they’re running with it.
    @robhug71 …
Steroids were legal in the 70s. Coach Noll didn’t like them, so steroid use wasn’t rampant among Steelers. But Mike Webster and Steve Courson used them and paid with their health. People rag about it because they need to discredit our Super Bowl dominance. And Jim Haslett, who never played for us and didn’t even enter the NFL until ’79, once said we introduced steroids to the NFL. He later admitted he was BSing–and that he was a steroid user himself. But once these PFT dimwits glom onto something, they’ll never let it go.

  98. @steelersmichele:
I’ve been a Steelers fan my entire life. And I don’t think for one minute that Roethlisberger sexually assualted anyone. But he still needs to go. I had my fill of him this past season, when he said all week he would play against the Ravens, only to change his mind the night before the game, leaving the coaching staff without a plan B. Hines Ward called him out, and deservedly so. Roethlisberger thinks he’s bigger than the organization itself. His recent controversy only adds fuel to the fire. He can be replaced. And he should be replaced. Suitable punishment would be to let Cleveland have him.

  99. @raidresnation…
At least Steelers fans are smart enough to know how to spell “raiders.” You are a real tool!!!

  100. Aw, raid-res … are you pms-ing? What’s the matter–couldn’t you get anyone to pot your pie and mellow you out?

  101. raidresnation,
I actually own two cats 🙂 Everyone in my family is healthy (no inbreeding), I have morals and values and go to church every Sunday. I’ve never been arrested, never had a speeding ticket, and I have a masters degree from Johns Hopkins. I graduated 5th in my class from HS, magna cum laude from college, own my own home, have no debt, and have a successful career.
I’m not bragging here, but I’m just trying to prove to people that say Steelers fans are stupid, useless inbreds that they are wrong. Some of us are quite smart, quite educated and quite successful. We’re not all the lowlifes that you make us out to be. Yeah, some Steelers fans are alcoholics that beat their wife and are white trash, but believe me, you have that in Raiders fans, too.
Didn’t think I’d have to defend myself and other Steelers fans to such extremes, but apparently there are fans of other teams who are useless and stupid and need a detailed explanation 🙂
By the way, not all Steelers fans are supporting Ben. Most of us think he needs to grow up and change his behavior and are HOPING this isn’t true.

  102. @Deb …
Thanks for the history lesson on the Steelers. Mike Webster’s premature death was linked to repeated head trauma, while Steve Courson, an admitted Steriods user, died from a fallen tree accident. There’s no question that Steriods were used among some Steelers offensive lineman, but no one from the Steelers’ defense of the 1970s has every been reportedly connected with Steriods. As for Noll not “liking Steriods,” I am pretty sure he was willing to do “whatever it takes” back in the day. But your point is well taken: Steriods were legal in the 1960s and ’70s.

  103. @robhug71 …
In an interview before his death, Mike Webster attributed at least some of his health issues to steroid use. And Steve Courson was the poster child on steroids and blamed them for his heart condition and failing health. A tree may fall on me, too, one day. Doesn’t mean I was healthy but for the tree.
I originally noted that no one on the defense was connected to steroids, but since I’m the Tolstoy of PFT, I edited it to try and cut the length of my post. That will teach me. Guess I have to spell out everything or people will assume I’m clueless.
Of course since you were being facetious and I took you to school , can’t blame you for getting snippy. Excuse me while I climb down from my high horse.

  104. Deb …
Me snippy? Sorry. Somehow I missed that exclusive interview with Mike Webster. Sorry again. Steve Courson had rebuilt his body to the point that he no longer needed a heart transplant. That’s pretty amazing. As for the Steelers defense, I was referring to the idiot from Baltimore who said the Steelers’ defense of the ’70s should be renamed the Steriod Curtain. I was looking for him name names. Getting back to Iron Mike, the old Steelers, with the exception of Courson, were always pretty “closed mouth” about their involvement with Steriods. I have no doubt that Webster was a user. When he was drafted in 1974, he weighed 220 pounds. I am still not convinced, however, that steriods were the cause of his death.
@steelersmichele: You can’t take comments on here personally. They’ll drive ya nuts if you do.

  105. Hey, robhug71, it’s all on me. Sometimes I start to sound like football’s answer to Mary Poppins: “Now, children, let me explain …” Good grief! Where IS my umbrella? I have places to go LOL

  106. Let’s say the lawyer finds a way to get him to be found innocent on the worst charge. If it is proven that he knew this was an underage girl, I predict that the Steelers will suspend him for the first game of the season.
It’s important to remember that Coach Cowher had told him to wear his helmet and he didn’t and that, while Andrea McNulty’s case was brought up right before training camp, last season there were rumors from several sources that said guys in the locker room didn’t like his arrogance or work ethic. This makes the third offseason that he has been a distraction.
I find it sad when people don’t find the lasting peace and true joy that only come from God. That’s not to say that finding that always completely keeps you from self-destruction. He’s had some attractive girlfriends and I’m not saying everyone has to fit the mold of getting a wife and having kids but you wonder what it is that keeps him from doing that. I know Dennis Rodman is a total thrillseeker and I remember an interview with radio host Mancow where he said that if not for his daughter, he would commit suicide. He finds there is no thrill for him anymore and that life is too boring. I doubt Ben has done have the freaky stuff the Worm has, but it’s possible.
All I know is that, no matter who Cincinnati and Cleveland adds, whether it is #7 or someone else throwing to those five amazing receivers in Pittsburgh, the balance of power has shifted to Baltimore with the trade for Anquan Boldin.

  107. @nowathand …
The girl is 20 years old. She is one year under the legal drinking age in Georgia. But sexually speaking, she is not underage. Since he met her in a bar with her friends, he had no reason to assume she was under 21. He bears no responsibility for her underage drinking. That responsibility belongs to the bartenders that served her.
Yes, lasting peace comes from God, but Ben won’t have to marry to find it. Maybe what’s kept him from marrying is that he hasn’t found the right person–or he realizes he’s not mature enough to marry, much less than parent.
Time will tell about the balance of power in the AFC North.

  108. @nowathand…
If you think the balance of power in the AFC North has shifted to Baltimore because the Ravens signed Boldin, obviously you’ve never seen Joe Flacco play. He’s awful!! Besides, Boldin is always hurt. As for the Steelers suspending Roethlisberer for one game: That’s ridiculous. They need to either trade or release him. Roethlisberger has been running the Steelers organization long enough. He needs a change of scenery. He needs to be traded to either Denver, Washington or Cleveland. ASAP!!!

  109. If Ben was black, they would let him off, like OJ, like Michael Jackson, like Wille Clark probably. All the time.
Any way……………………sigh……………….how could the league do anything yet? He has not been convicted, and the NFL is astute enough to know that there are zillions of skanks out there looking to shake down rich guys. Easy money. Lawyers are complicit with it. NFL is well aware. Ben IS GUILTY of being stupid. But that is not a crime, it just wears you out.
They even talk about this problem in the rookie symposiums warning the players that they must be careful when going out as they are huge financial targets. Until we change the legal system and make the loser PAY, this will go on and on.

  110. Deb Doll,
Keep bragging. Its nice to see your haughty side.
So one Steeler fan out of millions does not commit crimes.

  111. Huh??? I admitted getting on my high horse and acting like I needed to school everyone else in football and to writing posts the length of “War and Peace.” Um … those aren’t things I’m particularly proud of raid-res, so I wasn’t bragging LOL

  112. Will someone please explain to me why a person who claims to be a raiders fan but can’t spell the word raiders is voicing an opinion? Hey, buddy, you have no creditablity. So… Shut up!!!

  113. Why do they call Heinz field-Heinz field ? because the Steelers are always playin Ketchup football ! .
