Fells returns to Rams

The Rams have won a modest bidding war with the Patriots for tight end Daniel Fells.

Jim Thomas of St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the news first; ESPN’s Adam Schefter says Fells will get $1.5 million on a one year deal.

The small deal shows Fells wasn’t a priority for New England, but the team is woefully thin at tight end. Alge Crumpler also visited Foxborough.

Fells is atop the depth chart in St. Louis for now. He had 21 catches and three touchdowns last year. That converts to seven touchdowns on an average offense.

UPDATE: Howard Balzer of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat points out that the Rams could have tendered Fells at 1.101 million and retained the right of first refusal and would up paying more.
