Spielman says there's "no pressure" to do a deal with L.T. today

With running back LaDainian Tomlinson in the building after an evening of wining and dining (and we know what Jared Allen would add to that), there’s a growing sense that the Vikings could sign L.T. today.

But V.P. of player personnel Rick Spielman told our buddy (and, on September 9, colleague) Paul Allen of KFAN that “[t]here’s no pressure to say, hey, we have to get it done today.”

But what of L.T.’s visit to New York?  Per a league source, the Jets had a chance to match the two-year, $5 million contract that the Chiefs paid to running back Thomas Jones, but opted not to do so.  If the Jets weren’t willing to pay that much money to Jones after he had a career-high rushing total of 1,402 yards in 2009, why would they give that much or more to Tomlinson?

  1. Are you sure it wasnt an evening of “whining and dining”?

  2. Rick,
We support you. Take your time, make a good decision and keep putting a good product on the field.

  3. The Jets would offer LT more money because he’s had more 1000 yard rushing seasons than Thomas Jones, despite his numbers dropping the past 2 seasons and even though Thomas Jones has had 5 straight 1000 yard seasons. (sarcasm)
At this point of both of their careers, I’d take Thomas Jones over LT as my lead back or taking the majority of the workload. But if LT doesn’t sign with the Vikings and Jets, I guarantee you he’ll become a Saint later on this month or right before/after the draft.

BECAUSE just maybe they want a different “type” of player…..Thomas Jones and Shonn Green are similiar players..LT is more of a receiving threat than TJ

No I dont know, please explain. You trying to be a sportswriter or a clown? Which one?

  6. Of course there’s no pressure to sign LT. No one else is likely to want him, other than on the cheap, and LT clearly overvalues himself. Most teams would draft a third down back or pick up a second tier veteran. The Vikings are running out of time however, and need to do anything they can to interest an apathetic city into funding a new stadium. Promoting LT as a difference maker at this point is ridiculous, but to the casual fan name recognition is important. If you saw him last year you know he didn’t have much left, and he was running against Kansas City, Oakland and Denver twice a year.

  7. This is awsome!!
Sign ’em all.. LT, TO Moss et all.
You all know it’s gonna come down to Precious throwing ANOTHER stupid INT at your moment of nirvana.

  8. You’ve got to wonder if the Jets were tired of Thomas Jones’ poor locker room presense. After all it was comments by Jones that ran Favre out of town and into the NFC Championship game with the Vikings, so I’m not suprised they wanted him gone.
LT on the flip side is a shining beacon in the locker room. His presense will greatly help in mentoring Adrian Peterson, something that Chester Taylor never stepped up to the plate to do.
Additionally if LT does sign with MN, it’s all but a sign that the Favre will be leading the team for one more year. Maybe this this year the Vikings will get that *nod nod wink wink* from Roger Goodell, after all its a little early for Detroit to be making their Super Bowl run, or maybe the embarrassment of the Starcaps case will have Goodell give it to someone else this year…

No not really. We are confident that we will do much better than last year. If you can read between the lines that means Super Bowl.

  10. Paul Allen is going to be your colleague?!?! What does that mean? Please tell me that he will still be doing the Vikings call on the radio!!

They will both be in the Vikings radio booth that Thursday night, when the Vikings are playing the Saints.

  13. Vikings AND LT! It will be like an all-star team of players that are great at whining after choking in the playoffs.

  14. Contra, I think you forgot your sense of humor this morning. What position do you play by the way? With all the “we” talk and all…

Paul Allen has invited Mr. Florio to sit in the broadcast booth with him and add his voice to the KFAN radio broadcast in New Orleans if the Vikings get scheduled against the Saints in that first Thursday night (Sept. 9) NFL Kickoff game.

  17. Thanks Franchise. I was worried. I love listening to Paul Allen call the Vikings games.

  18. I think it’s great… and maybe some kind of inkling that the Vikes know Favre is coming back? LT would not be in MN for T-Jack or Rosenfels….

  19. Whatever ToddM6D was smoking, it’s rude for him not to share.

what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

  24. Does Tomlinson have to wait for the owners to kick in more money through a cash call as with Brett Favre, Jared Allen and Bernard Berrian?
Too bad the viklings are such a low revenue team that it always takes investors pouring more money into the franchise to sign anyone.
If they were in a better market they would have cash available for these things.

  25. Kind of a dumb question. To LT means sales of many Jerseys, trinkets and seats. To not LT means to leave a hole in the RB corps.
Take they guy. Sign the guy and expect that he would be a fantastic addition. This is potentially THE BEST back in history. He still scored 12 TD’s last year and he is GREAT at catching the ball out of the backfield. He can help AD with his fumblitus and teach him some vet tricks to get him back on track to possibly be the greatest himself.
Just thinking out-loud: the only people that seem to think this isn’t a great idea are fools trolling around OTHER teams articles in search of someone to write homophobic negative drivel about. I would guess them to be fans of teams who just didn’t make it as far as the Vikings did this year and simply are bitter.
It would be great for PFT if someone actually monitored this stuff a little bit and just kicked off the people who are only here to cover up their own inadequacies by searching all day to find sites they can write all the bad words Mommy does not let them say at home. If you are reading this and it stings then-YES I am talking to you.

  26. Favre will choke again this year, except u vikes fans are correct. It’ll be in the super bowl

Oh no we get it, it you guys that dont. I know it sucks that you let go a guy who ended up doing great things for the Vikings. It was an “awww shucks” moment for Packer fans when they saw how he flourished in Minnesota. I know, we all get it. Its like knowing you got the short end of the stick a minute after you made a trade with someone. You guys need to get over it…like yesterday. Coming in these boards and whining about it will not get him back so just let it go.

  29. LT is taking his physical.
Seal it up, the Vikes have the best RB tandem in the league.

    —————————————
Toddm6d, you have it backwards. It was FAVRE’S attitude in the locker room and towards his team mates that ran him out of NY. On the other hand, Thomas Jones was a team leader, led the prayers, did the pep talks…he was a locker room favorite. Read the stories: the team wasn’t happy that management wouldn’t pay the bonus and let Jones go.
Favre is the one that wouldn’t socialize with the team outside the job, wouldn’t encourage them. He wasn’t happy in NY: NY wasn’t happy with him. He split that locker room and killed morale. Look at the difference now, with the Jets performance and the fact that the team and their spouses had Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners together this year at Bart Scott’s house. Losing Favre was a godsend to the Jets. Losing TJ is rough, but they will be OK. You can keep “Princess Favre”, if he decides to play again.

  32. So much hate on here, I find it classic how other fans can
continue to bag us out when we were 3 points away from the superbowl… The truth is with ap and lt there would be no
better tandam in the league, period. So get it done, let’s make ap even better than what he is and give lt 100 carries a
year. Forte and Taylor… Grant and green…. Lions have..? Mate
this is easily the best, he’ll even without lt it’s still the best, as far as I’m concerned this is just adding icing to the cake
    baby!! 🙂

  34. So many losers come on here and just post and post and post about a team they don’t even like.
Get a grip on your lives, people.

  35. Lord Favre will lead us to the promised land!
I suppose LT could be water boy, as we have two young backs on the roster that should, if Chilly had half a brain, get a shot before pissing money away on a washed up 3rd down back who can’t pass protect.
WE HAVE BIGGER NEEDS AT OTHER POSITIONS…spend the money there.

  37. If LT wanted to see grown men running around in a dress, he would have signed with the 49ers.
He realizes that he doesn’t have much time left in the NFL, he wants to go the Superbowl. And with Brent’s track record in recent championship games, he has to look elsewhere. He is using the Vikings for leverage so you can’t blame him for that, he just had to pay the price of listening to Col Klink drone on for hours about his kick ass offense to get that leverage.

  38. Hey Contra, read the newspapers.
I always can back up the facts I post. That’s why they are facts. Why not look them up and learn.

Do you really think your posts make me think any different about the Vikings? Are you in some way trying to make Viking fans stop becoming fans because they read your ignorance?
