Steelers re-sign Charlie Batch to two-year deal

Charlie Batch is staying in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers announced today that they have re-signed Batch, an unrestricted free agent quarterback who has spent the last eight years in Pittsburgh, to a two-year deal. No financial terms were disclosed.

The Steelers were always interested in keeping Batch, but it may have become a higher priority when starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault. The Steelers’ other backup quarterback is Dennis Dixon.

Batch has started four games during Roethlisberger’s tenure in Pittsburgh and has been fairly reliable, although he’s thrown only two passes in the last two years.

  1. Dixon is Number 2. No doubt. Charlie is there for guidance and emergencys. Charlie is a great guy and great mentor. Few do more for underprivilidged kids in the burgh than him and his Best of the Batch Foundation. Glad he is sticking around.

  2. Hell yeah Charlie…another year of free, front row seats. He’d be at the games anyway…hometown boy. And I’d be suprised if he has to throw another two passes.

  3. this is a good move. he helps coach on the sideline. the only other qb would have been tyler palko who was on the practice squad last year

  4. Charlie Batch is staying in Pittsburgh. I’m sure all the Steeler fans will be sleeping better tonight knowing they have that Detroit Lions castoff for another 2 years. I guess Bubby Bristor, or Mark Malone could not be talked into comming out of retirement.

  5. Let the Charlie Batch-Dennis Dixon camp battle to determine Pitt’s new quarterback begin. It does not matter as they are both horrible. Cleveland and Pittsburgh will be fighting it out for the cellar.

  6. I was hoping as a coach. I imagine he’s pretty much worthless now. I guarantee he will play this year at least 2 games.

  7. That comes as somewhat of a shock to me, in all honesty. Batch has been a dependable backup, but he’s 35 this year and from what I heard, they were putting Dixon in as the #2 QB.
But, hey, with Ben’s legal troubles always a possibility, why not keep someone around who knows the offense as well as Batch?

  8. The Steelers will need four quarterbacks on the roster in 2010. If Rothlisberger misses games due to legal reasons, they need more than Dixon and Batch.

  9. He’s a good man. He is building really nice houses for low income people in his hometown. I’ve driven past the construction spot many times. I’m glad he is staying. Pittsburgh needs good people like him. Every city does.

  10. Batch and Dixon? Why don’t the Steelers entertain the thought of McNabb? I mean,Ben is not who you want to be the face of the Steelers do you? I could see McNabb there. PS- this is a serious post.

  11. Dixon is #2 and Batch is #3 now.
Batch is an example of everything that is good in football.

  12. Best position in football, the backup QB on an NFL team must be cake. Get paid to hold a clipboard and workout.

  13. You Steeler fans have got to be kidding me if you don’t believe in Dennis Dixon. He’s a stud. Especially knowing he’s been developing in a great system over there in Pittsburgh going on a few years now. So he threw the interception against Baltimore that cost the game but u had to give the Raven DE credit on his lucky last minute drop back which was risky against Dixon. Other than that play he looked poised against a great Ravens defense. Especially his run for the TD. He’s got one year left. I’m praying u guys release him and u can keep the rapist and Batch. Come back home to Oakland Dixon where you’ve wanted to play your whole life. We can use ya. We don’t have to worry about the O line cause youre not goin to catch him when he starts running. I’d go Dixon over Batch anyday.

  14. No way he’s the #2 QB ahead of Dixon. I like him and he would be a great QB coach but he takes a sneeze to get injured.

yeah… that made sense. Batch has been a part of the Steelers for 5 years ya dink. What is wrong with resigning your back up qb who already knows the system and hasn’t failed you in that capacity?
    Idiots…

  18. Well, probably prudent, given that , guilty or innocent Big Dumb-Ass is too fricken stupid and/or immature to ‘get it’, they may well need him.
Adding to the list of sadness associated with Cement-Head, if he sails on this, and if he is innocent he should, I think the I.Q. is too small and the Ego to big to never put himself in this position again.
If anything he’ll feel more untouchable unless he is smarter than I give him credit for….so far, he has provided me zero proof that is possible.

    * * * * *
Pervy, I am sure you were being serious, and that shows how dumb you really are. First off, if Ben is not convicted of any crime in Georgia, he will be the QB of Steelers notwithstanding any appropriate suspension, etc the league will hand out. The players get paid to play the game. I am sure the Ravens don’t care that Ray Lewis is the face of the Ravens, which he clearly is. Ben is a much better QB than McNabb ever was. It’s not even close. McNabb is a pouting baby that has never taken the blame for any football-related mistake he ever made, which have been many. He has no clue how to lead a 2 minute drill, and he can’t run anymore. He has alienated teammates because of his actions on the field. Say what you want about Ben’s off-field actions, but on the field he is head and shoulders above the quality of McNabb.

  20. although he’s thrown only two passes in the last two years.

Wow. How serious? Yes Ben is an idiot and yes he is obviously not a good role model..but unlike the Rooney’s, Tomlin, and a handful of drooling yinzer media members, most people in the City of Champs aren’t that concerned with image. –(And before I hear a bunch of nonsense “rapist-berger” comments, do remember that he hasn’t been charged with anything except being an idiot.) –We want to win Superbowls. And Ben does that. About every two or three years, actually. McNabb? Never.
    P.S. You’re seriously a fool.

  22. He would have been re-signed regardless of the Ben situation. This will be his 8th season in Pittsburgh, and his 3rd year mentoring Dennis Dixon.
Certain people acting like Ben will not be our quarterback next are smoking crack. He Will serve a suspension if charged, but I do not see that happening. The girl was reportedly HAMMERED and went willingly into the bathroom. Lacking any witnesses, DNA evidence, or a reliable accuser (.20 B.A.C.), I don’t think you can charge Ben regardless of what actually took place.
And stop acting as if Ben is our whole team……
Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Rashard Mendenhall, Heath Miller, Troy Polamalu, Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, James Farrior, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley…..
Yeah, I’d be prayin Ben is done too, because, if he isn’t, the Steelers are set to make another run.

Cletus,I know Ben is better than McNabb. As far as alienation, how come I was reading many of Ben’s teammates can’t stand him and think he is a jerk? Got an answer for that smart guy?

  24. they better hope bendover rapeandbugger isnt suspended.
cause charlie needs the big back 45+ rushes a game offense at this point to even approach mediocrity.
and people will decipher dixon soon enough anyway.

  25. Perv, didn’t I see a headline about McNabb going to Minnesota? I think the Saints broke your other old QB. So you probably need a new old QB for them to break this season.
Love that you’re staying, Charlie. Great to have the experience at #3.

  26. Batch will likely be the 3rd string QB and will serve as a mentor for Dixon (and Ben). Smart signing with no real risk.

Pittsburgh has won like 3 titles since 1995.
    Like 5 since 1980
New York has won 5 since 1996

Losangelas has won like 5 since 2000.

  28. Ben himself does NOT win SB. Let’s get real.. the team does. Mr. Moron is sacked more than any QB in the league. Obviously the Dumcsh.. can’t throw the ball away. DUH He may get hurt and we can breath a sigh of relief to get him out of the public light with regards to playing! It’s the defense that carries the team anyways!!!!
Charlie has been loyal to the Steelers and I don ‘t believe he’s been in the news bad mouthing the team or anything else. However, he needs to stop handing off the ball.. so dang predictable!
Dixon will be #2. Will be #1 by Sept.
McNabb? Mr. Attitude. It wasn’t T.O. it was McNabb… butthead. NO THANK YOU! We don’t see him endorsing any products either. Hmm. Vick #1 for the Eagles.. Weak. Vick is a good player, not a good QB. He needs to be a RB oe WR. Hopefully the dog killer will be released.

  29. Pervy has never really came off as being mean spirited. At least he’s never pissed me off.
That being said I would rather give Dixon a chance rather than bring in McNabb.

  33. Pervy, do you follow the Steelers every day like I have done for over 40 years? I don’t think so. You can say you “read” anything you want, but show a link where it says Ben’s teammates don’t like him. All I remember reading in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that his teammates say he is their “leader”, in fact that he wears a “superman cape in the fourth quarter”, etc. But let me tell you something, genius, you don’t have to like the person that works next to you, you just have to respect the type of job the person does. Do you think every one on a football team (or in any business) likes everyone else personally? Hell no. In this case, Ben does the job on the field and helps his teammates accomplish their goals including FINANCIALLY. I have never read one article where a teammate said “I don’t like Ben”. Go find one pal. Meanwhile, go ask TO what he said about McNabb when he played with the Eagles, or when McNabb through the younger Eagles under the bus this past year? When was the last time Ben didn’t take the entire blame when the Steelers lost?
You act like you know Ben personally. You don’t, and I don’t. Nobody is perfect, not even Ben.
And BTW, thanks for admitting that Ben is better than McNabb, just like I said, you big dummy.

  34. Amazing.
A Steelers thread and there’s only one pre-pubescent remark containing a play on BR’s name with the word “rape” in it.
I guess even the haters are getting tired of it.

New York, Boston, an L.A. — all cities with Competitive NBA and MLB teams. Pittsburgh doesn’t have an NBA team and has 1/3 of a baseball team. How many (professional sports team) championship parades did your city have last year? I’ll wait……. Well we had two with two and one-third (Pirates) pro teams in the city.
And the Penguins were never on the verge of leaving “because lack of fan support.” Owner Mario Lemieux admitted after we WON THE CUP last year that those were empty threats in a setting of “financial posturing” and arbitration to get a new arena built.
And BTW I was in front of the t.v. for every game during those dark years.
Glad you liked PNC Park tho…it is beautiful. Hope you saw a concert or something and not the Pirates.

Haha I don’t think there’s anything “Gangsta” about being a creep to chicks and crashing your motorcycle (Ben) or even slapping your chick around from time to time (James Harrison…ok well maybe thats gangsta) –just kidding leave me alone feminists!!
However, I would put my money on James Harrison against almost any player in the league in a good ol fashioned prison shank fight. (no pun intended Ben) Maybe that should be PFT’s next thread??
i’m just saying, personalities aside…the Steelers have a good team and its a great thing to be a fan and live in the city of Pittsburgh.
Id stick up for them even if they went 0-16.
    all in good fun….

  43. PervyHarvin,
Don’t remember. What did you say?
I agree about Farve. Deb needs to pay attn to the Steelers. I dont’ think she knows football that well. I hope he comes back. I don’t want his last play to be an int. That’s tough for me and I am sure it is for him. If he decides to come back, the Vikings will welcome him with open arms. I’m thinking it is too bad that LT didn’t go there. However, he’s been hurt alot and I believe that’s why the Chargers let him go.

  44. If there is a better human being in the NFL than Charlie Batch, point him out to me. On the basis of his humanity alone, I think the guy has a spot on the team until he says he’s had enough.
I like what I have seen from Dixon thus far and was pleasantly surprised the team drafted him out of Oregon. I don’t think there is any doubt in Batch’s mind of what his role is here….and knowing Charlie, I bet he could care less.
I guess I have one question for Holeinone….
you didn’t see the interviews that surrounded the Steelers’ game in Baltimore last year? It would seem to me that Ben’s a bit aloof and that the entire losing streak that doomed them smacked of something brewing in the locker room. And yeah, I have read about the team for more than 40 years, as well, enough to know that when the Rooneys want something squelched, it’s stifled about as closely as a court gag order.

  45. @Pervy …
You mean you’re not loaded with cash?
Why am I wasting my time with you? 😉
Well, I expect you’re broken-down old man has a few plays left in him 🙂 But if he winds up facing the Steelers in the Super Bowl, he won’t be seeing Dixon unless Harrison knocks him into the Pittsburgh bench. At that point … hope T-Jack is up to speed.

  46. I don’t believe the Steeler will repeat this year. I think only 2 teams have, the Steelers and the Cowboys. But the Steelers had the steel curtain. I don’t believe our defense now is as strong except for Harrison and Polamalu. I just love Troy. What a nice guy!

While I agree that Ray Ray was at one time the Alpha-jungle-bear-pig-man….he is definitly past his prime.

Raiden is to mortal combat as Tony Gonzales is to Prison Shank Fighting.

  55. Steelers always keep 3 QBs. Dixon and Batch are just switching the #2 and #3 positions. After his 2 years are up, Batch will be one of the QB coaching assistants.

  56. Pervy, you are OK in my book. Look forward to more educated discourse with you down the road.

  57. Batch will be backing up Dixon.
Big Ben is going to jail.
Steeler fans rejoicing the fact that the girl was wasted may want to pipe down. That helps the prosecution’s case. Why? Because in Georgia is a girl is intoxicated by drugs or alcohol she cannot consent to sex. Big Ben admitted to a sexual encounter. The girl was wasted and couldn’t consent.
Here’s how it goes: Famous QB gets 20 year old girl wasted in the VIP area and then follows her as she stumbles into the bathroom and forces himself on her. Small town jury convicts. Big Ben goes to jail.
If the girl was sober it would help the defense because now that the video has been erased it’s he said/she said. Well since she was drunk and could not consent per Georgia law it doesn’t matter. Ben is guilty of sexual assault.

  58. DrK, if you are referring about Ben’s concussion and not playing in the Baltimore game last year, of course I did see and read about that. I saw what Hines said on TV and I criticized him for saying it on PFT, since I do think you keep that stuff in the locker room. As I said, you can’t expect all the animals in the zoo to get along 😉 .
But, what I understand is that Tomlin said Ben begged him to play before the game, the day of the game, and it was Tomlin’s decision to not play him. The man allegedly had a legitimate concussion, and I don’t have any issue with him mentioning that to team docs. It is stupid to put your long-term future before one game. Besides it is a team game and Dixon played a decent game. If Hines or others wanted to say they would have hid the injury from team docs then that’s fine for them but not necessarily the smart thing to do. But that does not mean they don’t like Ben or think he is an idiot (again I don’t know if they do or don’t but I don’t recall any comments along those lines). And even if they don’t like him, who cares, but it is clear they respect his talent on the field when he is able to play. Anyway, Hines is insane the way he plays through everything and I love him as a gutsy player, but I still don’t think he should air dirty laundry in public.
I also think Batch is a wonderful guy and hope he is on the team this year.

  59. Sounds good! You steeler fans are ok.I don’t care what the Bengals fans say.And Browns, and Ravens, and Patriots, etc. LOL

Seems neither of those things exist.
And nobody is going to jail based on the slurred, incoherent, rambling prattle of a drunk underage chick in a .2 BAC stupor.

(once more, you don’t – seeing a pattern here yet?)
Bottom line – the entire case boils down to “she said, he said” with one key difference.
BR has already been up front about being with her, and that something “sexual” happened.
(Any specifics here are only speculation, so don’t even try)
OTOH, she has already clearly established herself as a liar. (Hint: she got into a bar and drank while underage, based on a phony ID)

    1. The headline on this story is about Charlie Batch, not Ben Roethlisberger. There are a lot of Roethlisberger threads to feed your bloodlust. Find one.
    2. No police or legal source has said Roethlisberger admitted to a sexual encounter. That came from an unnamed source quoted by a television station three weeks ago.
    3. Your scenario about the QB getting the girl wasted and following her into the bathroom doesn’t come from any official source.
    4. It’s been confirmed that there were no cameras in the bathroom/VIP area. So there was no video of those areas to erase.
You’re too stupid to grasp the simple facts of the case, let alone Georgia criminal law. And you’re getting off on a sexual assault accusation as a way to stick it to rival football fans. By reveling with such obvious joy over the possibility of the accusations being true, you’re salivating over the possibility that the Georgia woman was really victimized … just because you hate the Steelers. Sick.

Oh really? And you’re an expert?
Only yesterday you thought Terry Bradshaw was dead. [ /giggle ]

  64. @RebaT …
Perv and I have a lil history. He knows I’m rooting for Favre to come back; I’m a Brett believer.
Of course, Favre can only do so well once he comes up against the Steelers, but that’s to be expected. He seems to have problems passing around teams wearing variations of black & gold. Isn’t that right, Perv? 😉

  65. Reba T,
Once again you open your mouth and remove all doubt.
    – 5 teams have repeated (Steelers twice, Cowboys, Broncos, Patriots, and Packers).
    – 4 plus 2 is 6, but there is more than one franchise in Pittsburgh. The Penguins title makes 3 titles in 5 years for the CITY of Pittsburgh.
    – Your favorite player James Harrison has been charged with more crimes than Ben has (he never has) Ever heard of due process or innocent until proven guilty?
    – Ben doesn’t win titles on his own, but how many titles did the Steelers win between Bradshaw and Benny? I’ll give you a hint – goose egg.
As the quarterback goes, so goes the team. Show some loyalty, or intelligence, or do Steeler fans a favor and shut up.

  66. Yada yada yada
Fi there were not 4 SB wins for the Steelers in the 70s, then why does Terry Bradshaw have uh, 4????? Yes, get your facts right you moron.
Keep bringing may name up… I just love the replies. It just shows you what YOU know too.
    You F’ers.

  67. I also hope Rapistberger ROTS!
    Dickcheese –
Giving your comments yesterday you are a PIG and it is a shame that a woman would ever marry you. Crap-mouth. Little man, and I am sure you know what I mean! LOSER

  68. You guys BRING IT ON. You will NEVER back me into a corner. I suggest you look your information up instead of shooting from the hip and looking like you have a GED.
Deb loves to write bloody novels about her “Brother” who is an atty. I’m sure she’s on the phone this much for her to post.

  69. I’m glad Charlie Batch was resigned. I don’t think he was going anywhere else anyway. He’s a dependable backup and Mr. Dixon may be the eventual future for the Steelers.
Way to hang in there Deb and RebaT! You are holding your own against the cretons at PFT. Nothing like logic and reason to shut them up. So Steelers haters, which team do you support? Are they on the Steelers schedule this year? If so then the Steelers will be happy to come to your town and leave your team battered, bruised and beaten. It’s good to be hated.
    “Stairway to Seven!”
    GO STEELERS!

  70. She’s a slut, she’s a ho. NO, B E N is the ho and the slut. He needs to walk up 4 levels of steps to ever be close to a roto-rooter man.
Men doesn’t seem to understand that concept. They just think of their little friend. Little is the optimal word.

  71. Deb- HAHA You know that game was ours as sure as the Saints game should have been….should have been lol
RebaT.. What up with that name? Quite obvious you are a dude.

  72. Reba T,
I am married to a beautiful woman and have 2 beautiful daughters. I notice that you attacked my character, and not my facts. Then again, facts aren’t your strong suit. Like when you said that only 2 teams have repeated, or when you said the Steelers wouldn’t repeat next year (saints won this year). There is a reason you are being attacked by every Steeler fan on here……. You’re a walking punchline.
I was promiscuous as a young man, but that hardly makes me a pig.

  73. @Klytus …
You and I have never had a problem, so I have no idea why you are mentioning my name in the same sentence with RebaT or why any sane Steelers fan would mention the words “logic” and “reason” in the same sentence RebaT.
How much have you had to drink tonight? Hand your keys to someone.

  74. Oh, Pervy darlin’, I feel your pain on that Saints game … but your boys were just outplayed by the Steelers. That happened once in a Super Bowl, too, didn’t it? 😉

  75. How in the world can anyone be excited about the re-signing of Charlie Batch?
I’ve read on here a few times that he is “dependable.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. This guy has made a living on IR.
If you can possibly find reason to rejoice about this transaction, it’s no wonder you have Roethlisberger so highly overrated.

    It’s obvious you’re just a man-hater.
You’re just a bitter, resentful, insecure little shrew because sometime in your past you felt some man did you wrong.
Life isn’t fair moron, get over yourself.
Better still, why not take you garbage someplace where somebody gives a rat’s ass?
    BTW, is this you?

  77. @robhug71 …
Goodness gracious, but you are a sourpuss!!
Charlie is injury-prone. No one can deny that. But at the moment, no one knows how Ben’s legal issues will be resolved. I believe–and think the Steelers believe–Ben will the QB. But they have to have a contingency plan. Dixon can play the position, but no matter what you think, he doesn’t have Ben’s talent. He certainly doesn’t have his experience. He would need help.
If Ben’s legal issues take him out of play, they’ll also take him out of the locker room and off the sidelines. He won’t be able to provide any assistance to Dixon. I was under the impression the Steelers didn’t intend to re-sign Batch. But it’s possible that Ben’s circumstances prompted them to rethink. He’s a one-time starter, he’s intimately familiar with the Steeler’s system, and he has a calm, reassuring personality. Having him on the sidelines can only benefit Dixon if the need arises.
