When former 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan left the team, quarterback Alex Smith lost his biggest ally.
It’s hard to imagine Smith would have restructured his deal in San Francisco after last season if not for McCloughan’s belief in him. With a new decision-maker in charge, it’s worth wondering if Smith’s position as quarterback of the present and future is in peril.
Speaking about the quarterback position, temporary decision making czar Trent Baalke told Bay Area reporters Friday, “Right now we’re very comfortable with where we’re at, and that’s where we’re going to leave it.”
Baalke was the team’s director of player personnel and stressed he wasn’t going to dramatically change the team’s approach.
“Did Scot and I share similar beliefs? The answer to that was, yes,” Baalke said. “Scot is a very good evaluator of talent. A lot of the work we did on this [draft] board, we did together.”
