Montgomery agrees to join Vikings

Defensive end Michael Montgomery burns to remain a part of the best rivalry in football.

The deposed former Packer has agreed to terms with the Vikings, according to Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette 1500 ESPN Twin Cities.

Montgomery played 56 games for the Packers, starting eight in 2008.  He’s expected to back up Ray Edwards on the left side for Minnesota.

  1. Further proof that all Packers aspire to become Vikings if given the chance. I mean, when you date an ugly girl(Packers) and a beautiful girl(Vikings) wants you,you must jump the river if you have a brain in your head!

  2. As a Viking fan, if things hold true to form, he will probably make the pro bowl……

  3. Hell he is an ex Aggie from A & M what can you expect no sense of direction or any brains, all in their to0l which will make him a good love boat player

  4. I would leave the Packers too if I had a chance to play for a championship caliber team like the Vikings.

  5. Don’t hold your breath, Chicken. He’s a good guy, lot’s of try hard, but I don’t see an all pro. He’s Aaron Kampman Lite. As in too light. As a Packer fan, I’m happy to see the Vikings depth at DE is a guy we were always trying to replace.

  6. Or maybe they think Ray is leaving and he is being signed to back up Brian Robison.

  7. Wow, really? You just had to drop the “Montgomery burns” reference didn’t you?

  8. Oh my Heavens! Saaaaack! And it’s another safety! Jare….. No wait, who is this!!! It’s! Not Greg Lewis!!! Seriously, who is this kid?
This is something Paul Allen would say, if this guy makes his first sack.

  9. He’s a good backup, who can pash rush. he has great size, and is a ray edwards prototype, just not as complete. good signing.

  10. I don’t see this as a very big deal. He was in no way an impact player for GB and I don’t see him getting any playing time on the vikings front line.

  11. That is a bunch of crap. Everyone knows Lions – Jaguars is the best rivalry in football.

  12. Vikings have had the worst luck of any Pro team in sports history
    ** 4 Superbowl losses
** 5 straight losses in NFC Championship games
**Korey Stringer dies in training camp.
    **The love boat incident
**Gary Anderson who had just completed the first perfect regular season in NFL history (not missing a single extra point or field goal attempt the entire year), missed a 38-yard attempt with less than 2 minutes remaining in NFC championship game that most likely puts Vikes in Superbowl in 98.
**in 2003 Arizona’s last second touchdown on 4th and 28 against Vikings eliminated Vikings from playoffs. The moment of Arizona’s touchdown was actually the first moment the entire season in which the Vikings hadn’t led their division. The Vikings became the second team in football history to miss the playoffs after getting off to a 6-0 start
**The “Hail Mary” pass Drew Pearson caught against the Vikes in 75 NFC championship to give Dallas the win in the final minute.
    **Jim Marshalls wrong way run
**The Herschel Walker trade in which Vikings gave Dallas three 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders, plus a 3rd and a 6th rounder in addition to 5 players. Walker lasts only 3 seasons in Minnesota
    .
**Vikings despite being favored, The Vikings lose 41-0 in NFC championship game in 2000.
**Green Bays Antonio Freeman makes one of the all time great miracle catches in overtime to defeat Vikings in 2000
** With 19 seconds remaining in the 2010 NFC Championship game the Vikings call a timeout on 3rd and 10 at the Saints 33 yard line. They had one timeout remaining, so the smart money was on them running the ball and hoping to gain four to five yards — thus setting up an approximately 45-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. On that next play the Vikings are penalized for 12 men in the huddle. The penalty pushed them out of FG range and most likely cost them a trip to the Superbowl. See below for nail in the coffin on the next play
**2010 Favre`s 4th down 4th quarter interception with seconds remaining vs Saints in NFC championship puts New Orleans in Superbowl.
I`m sure there are things I missed but this is why I believe the Vikings have had the worst luck in Professional sports history

  13. Another classic Dumpster dive in the back alley at Lambeau by the Purple Brass….I know it’s a ‘copycat’ league but seriously, don’t they realize that there are other teams in the league to borrow from than the Packers.
    Montgomery isn’t even that good….wow!

  14. Best rivalry in football ????
I thought you said he was going to the Vikings. . . . .

  15. Sweet, go get’em flash. UUUUUU, who is Montgomery? Kampman couldn’t hold his jock,,,,,right?

  16. Yeah, it worked out great for Favre…another winter of discontent…err, malcontent…with a touch of narcicism (don’t trip as you run down the hall for the dictionary, Vikings fans…it means he’s full of himself)

  17. Well now the vikings have a starter opposite of Jared Allen.
It is an immediate upgrade to the defense.
Finally the vikings have signed a big name free agent.

Now watch him become top ten in the league in sacks. Everyone thought Favre and Longwell were done too, and that Jon Ryan was a bad punter.
Montgomery doesn’t have to be amazing with Jared Allen opposite him. With the recent success of ex-Packers on other teams, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to at least see him become a starter.
This (along with Jarrett Bush) is what happens when you have a GM that can’t tell talent from an area rug.

Spell it correctly if you are going to attempt to insult a person’s intelligence.

  20. It’s probably worth noting that Montgomery’s best game of his career came against Tennessee in 2008 when he was replacing injured starter Cullen Jenkins, and managed to record 8 tackles and one sack.
That year, he started 8 games are RDE (opposite Aaron Kampman) and managed 43 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the entire year. That was the best year of his career.
He’s nothing special, in fact he’s barely adequate. The Packers didn’t want him and the Vikings didn’t give up much to get him.

  21. Mountaindont says:
“What have the Vikings accomplished in the last 30 years ?”
More division titles than the Packers, Lions, and Bears since their arrival in ’61.

  22. Not sure this pick-up makes any sense. Althought I hope the best for Montgomery, I doubt he makes the squad after the preseason ends.

LMAO….typical Packer fan trying to show his intelligence (sic) by defining “narcissism” for everyone else when he doesn’t even know how the hell to spell the word……where did you hide that dictionary “Fire Ted”….how do you spell redneck, F-i-r-e-T-e-d.

  24. Am I missing out on something? How do the Viking fans think they have any legitimacy comparing Wisconsin women to Minnesota women. Asided from the Twin Cities, that state is a land full of nothing where inbreds do there work. There are actually places to go and things to do in Wisconsin that is not confined to one area…

  25. This is a total non-story. A career backup who couldn’t make plays in the 4-3 and was completely worthless in the 3-4.
    He’s a 2 sack guy as your 4th DE.
Love the Queen fans getting all excited like they just got Alex Brown or something.
    Idiots.

  26. TT and MM have established a rather good farm system for the rest of the NFL, draft and groom players (Sharper, Longwell, Favre, Kampman, etc. etc.) and then the other NFL teams find a way to steal them from the Packers “brainthrust”(couldn’t help the oxymoronism). If/When Arod finally becomes a dependable elite QB, the Vikes should be ready to pounce.

  27. Spreading rumors and promising hope are abound in the Packers locker room. They hear of the Underground Railroad led by Chilly Tubman that leads the wretched to greener pastures and freedom in Minnesota.Longwell,Sharper and Favre have all made it. Can you blame them for wanting a better life? Welcome home Mr. Montgomery, there is some chicken and cornbread on the table!

  28. This thread proves that some guys actually believe that a super model is going to marry them just because she happens to brush against them in a crowded airport. Step into reality. Mongomery is what he is, a backup who couldn’t stay healthy or productive. The Packers don’t need him, that’s for sure.
As for the Vikings fans on here, doesn’t it actually look worse that you’re team continues to sign the players from the team you presume is inferior? Apparently, the Vikings want former Packers, not vice-versa. Read into that. Also, for as much as you errantly presume your team is vastly superior to the Packers, they finished a whopping 1 game ahead of them last year in the standings. Judging by the Packers’ and Vikings’ respective team histories, I wouldn’t think now is the time for Vikings fans to start getting cocky. Unless you don’t learn anything from Mountaindont’s post, then go ahead. I don’t mind seeing Vikings’ fans squirm. They’re used to it.

  29. Wow, this signing will really put the Vikings over the hump! First Favre, now Montgomery. *snicker*

Hey dumbass, we cut him. He didn’t have a choice. Its kinda pathetic that the Vikings would sign a guy this bad. Waste of a roster spot on your team. He won’t have 2 sacks in 2010.

  31. Brian Robison is better than Edwards is as a pass rusher. He is Edwards current back-up, so maybe they want Robison to switch sides and back-up Allen or maybe they have a trade aligned with a team that has expressed interest in acquiring Robison as a starting end.

  32. the Vikings continue to lead the league in picking through the Pack’s dumpster

  33. Packer fans need to quit crying! I’m sick of it! Living just 2 hours from Green Bay, you definitely get sick of them always crying when something doesn’t go their way or when Favre left he then “sucked”. It just gets old! I’m done off my soap box but it would be nice to see them grow up!

  34. Congrats signing Michael Montgomery…dude is terrible and a liability in everything.
    YOU GUYS ROCK!
Vikings remain to be the Packers B team. What other players will they sign of the packers? Its a pretty disgusted crush they have with packer players.

  35. I want to hear that Ray Edwards was resigned. The Vikes already have Robison to back up Edwards. Whats with this???

  36. Whoever said the Vikings were a terrible team must have down syndrome. Rick Spielman is possibly the smartest man in football. He drafted Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice (the the 2nd round!), Chad Greenway, John Sulivan (5th round, started in his 2nd year). He lured future hall of famers Steve Hutchinson and Brett Favre. Oh yeah and he stole the best defensive end in the NFL, Jared Allen away from the Chiefs. … yeah what terrible decisions these last 5 years. Any GM would trade a testicle for any 2 of these players. Much props to Rick Spielman! Keep doin it buddy, the Super Bowl will be ours!

  37. Montgomery was drafted in the later rounds and it was hoped he would develop so the Packers could have depth on their defensive line. After a few seasons of nothing special, it was time for the Packers to cut bait, free up the roster spot for another player.
But I find it interesting that this marginal player of limited upside potential would be signed by the Vikings. It either speaks to the stupidity of the Vikings (ah drafting T Jackoff anyone?) or the lack of depth on their own defensive line that they thought Montgomery represents the best they could do. Either way, the Vikings are wasting their money.

  38. @pervert,
Make up your mind perv, yesterday you didn’t know who he was and didn’t want him.
    No lose for us.

  39. AS A VIKINGS FAN I APPLAUDE SPIELMAN AS WELL. A VERY GOOD JOB.
BUT PLAIN AND SIMPLE, DIVISION TITLES DON’T MEAN CRAP TO ME AT THIS POINT.
WE HAVE NEVER WON THE BIG ONE…..IT IS TIME,

  40. Another Packer retread ends up in Purple, how many is that now? Its like you Viking fans are cheering for the Packers when you watch your team.

  41. I guess all the trash talking over a 3rd stringer kinda helps support the “best rivalry” comment.

  42. Even when the packers used the 4-3 this guy only got time on the field when others were injured.

  43. He’s just another OK player that wasn’t good enough to play for the Packers. There are a lot of them out there. The Vikings and their fans have always enjoyed Packer sloppy seconds.

Don’t matter. He can’t even make our team. Unlike the Packers, our D line talent runs deep.

Is it, or is it proof that one man’s shit is another man’s treasure? I choose the latter.

  46. 1.) Montgomery is not bad. Not real good, but not bad. I’d say he’s a solid backup end in a 4-3. He cannot anchor, and doesn’t bring much in the pass rushing department. What he does best is stop the run. If I were a betting man, I would say Minnesota is worried about losing Edwards, and Monty is insurance. Oh well. Not a big deal, either way. Good luck, Monty, except for the games you play against the Packers.
2.) Tom Pelissero is a dynamite reporter, no doubt due to him being a fellow Pisano, and yes, he works for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, he’s not some Norwegian freak from Canada-Lite.
