Nike signs Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow won’t have an NFL contract for a few more months, but he has a major endorsement deal.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Tebow, the Heisman Trophy-winning Florida quarterback, has signed a shoe and apparel deal with Nike that will pay him just under $300,000 a year at minimum, with incentives that could earn him significantly more than that.

Whether you think Tebow will be a star or a flop in the NFL, there’s not much doubt that this is a smart business move for Nike. Tebow has an extraordinarily large fan base — maybe the largest fan base that any college football player has ever had at the time he’s entering the NFL. Even if Tebow’s NFL career consists mostly of standing on a sideline holding a clipboard, there will be plenty of fans who will want to purchase any shoes and apparel that Tebow endorses.

After all, if hundreds of people will line up to spend $160 on Tebow’s autograph, it stands to reason that quite a few will be willing to spend quite a bit on Tebow’s shoes as well.

  1. He’s a safe endorsee from a PR standpoint. But I don’t the see the logic in paying a guy 300,000 a year who is going to be riding pine his entire career.

  2. Well let’s see……..Air Jordans…………how about Water Tebows………as in “walk on”.

  3. Don’t bet against them having “John 3:16” on the bottoms or something. Seriously.

  4. Timothy will donate the endorsement money to the nike sweatshop employees

  5. Can we form a circle as posters, hold hands and give a quick prayer to God for Tebow signing this Nike contract?

  6. Nike will make much more than the $300,000 a year they’re paying him. So what’s the problem?

  7. The Tebow family incentivized the deal by offering to perform circumcisions for all Nike sweatshop employees thorughout the third world during the offseason.

  8. More details: Tebow will only endorse one shoe in each pair, as he refuses to support anything on the left.

  9. All sales of the Nike Air-Tebow are final. You can’t cancel an order after you’ve done the deed.

  10. Great move by Nike. It doesn’t hurt that I’m a huge Gators fan. Tebow’s gonna make it big.

  11. Nike coming out with new……. “Sideline Sneakers” or “Clipboard Cleats” ?

  12. They won’t have women’s versions of the shoes because then Tebow would be on a woman…

  13. while we have nothing personal against the guy we here at pft find it incredulous that he is being paid while he supports viewpoints we don’t agree with and is making money without having taken a snap in the nfl.quick what is he planning to do with the money?where will it go?these are questions we must have the answers to even though it is none of our buisness and again we have nothing personal against him .we just feel the need to write any and everything he does and slam him for it.that about sum it up florio?

  14. Apparently no one here owns a pair of Nikes.
I mean, with the whole sweat shop thing, I gotta believe you folks are leading the pocket-book revolt against Nike and their manufacturing practices.
I mean, the quality posters here wouldn’t just be taking a shot at a guy who maybe spanked their NCAA team.
Or maybe his belief system make you folks a bit uncomfortable? Hmmm….shame.
Either way one of the things I can’t stand more than the Timmy Tebow show is the douche-bags who get such a boner from bashing him.
Go ahead and bash the idiots that can’t seem to get laid without a court case, or the morons that forget they are packing heat at the airport. They have it coming….but what exactly is your problem with this kid?
You think he might be a hypocrite?
Fair enough…..now refer back to sentence one of this post.

Had to ask myself, if I had thought of that, would I have posted it?

I’m guessing these would be the limited edition version, only available in the first trimester

  17. Tim Tebow is promoting a product that will further increase the US trade deficit with his branding influence. From head to toe, every American can’t distance themselves as the blesser of sweatshops with their purchasing dollars unless they walk around naked or dress themselves pre-1950’s thriftshop. Unless you offer a viable option, STFU.

  18. True….tough to distance themselves. Better to just bitch and moan about someone else doing it.
    It just makes sense.
Nice to have a built in exscuse to perpetuate the problem some feel the need to blast some college kid about.
I’d be willing to bet if some of that Nike cash was coming their way, some of the ‘pain’ felt would just…..go away?
Not offering solutions, just funny how easy it is to ‘care’ when you don’t have to do anything about it.
Personally, I don’t care. about his deal with Nike. Sounds like the kid is marketing what he has to offer and the public will buy it as it wants, or doesn’t for that matter.
If only the Timmy Tebow Show was anywhere close to our biggest deficit concern……….I might actually grow to like the guy.

  19. But I don’t the see the logic in paying a guy 300,000 a year who is going to be riding pine his entire career.
That’s why they have the 300K, and you do whatever it is you do.

“Apparently no one here owns a pair of Nikes.”
    I don’t.
“I mean, the quality posters here wouldn’t just be taking a shot at a guy who maybe spanked their NCAA team.”
I am a Bama fan and I predicted 30-13. I was wrong, Bama won 32-13 and Tebow cried like a little girl.
“Or maybe his belief system make you folks a bit uncomfortable? Hmmm….shame.”
I am agnostic but I don’t think I am a better human being than Tim because of it. I bet Tim wouldn’t say the same thing about me…and neither would you……hmmm……intolerance…..shame.

Most Tebow haters will tell you the same thing: Tebow is a great kid and the only thing to dislike about him is his cocksure followers. Come to think of it, he is just like Jesus!!

  21. Not intolerant of what these guys (Burress, Holmes, Big Ben, et al) believe in.
You can call stupid stupid with little argument among folks in general.
I myself am agnostic, but do not feel it necessary to mock the followers of Jesus Christ with some cheap shot. (Intolerance? Shame?)
Still trying to find that ‘smoking gun’ (sorry Plax) in this whole Tebow hoop-la.

Or maybe, just maybe, people just think he’s a shitty QB who’s game won’t translate to the NFL level at all. Endorsing a guy who isn’t projected to be a starter at any position at the NFL level makes little business sense. A backup QB can’t draw sales numbers for Nike if he’s not on the field. Tebow is all sizzle and no steak. He’s the Brian Bosworth of the QB position.

  23. ok…to the tebow haters aka idiots….this guy is awesome….he has great qualilties, prioties are in checked, and he is a awesome football player for my all time fav. team the gators….people are so jealious of him….i am happy to hear about the nike contract….i think it is awesome…nike gave one of the biggest dirtbags in sports history one and i don’t recall this much drama…so screw u tim tebow haters…lets watch and see what he can do in the nfl…..cause i am guess he is gonna be awesome….he was from the best college team of all time….god it’s great to be a gator and a tim tebow fan!!!! peace out

Classic gator fan. Loves the football, so much so that he did not pay attention in school. I am just picturing this guy on one of the hundred or so episodes of Cops filmed in the “Sunshine” state.

  25. Tim Tebow; The top rated efficiency QB for his 4 years. Finished his degree in 3 1/2 years. 3.66 GPA. Most popular college football player in the nation.
Become a Tim Tebow fan, you will sleep better and your stomach will stop hurting. Conquer the nfl then Tim Tebow for president.

  26. Will Timmy take the high road and donate his earnings to the arrest, prosecution and lengthy prison terms of the child molesting pope, bishops, priests, etc. of his fond whackadoodle religion.??
Get a pair timmy and do the right thing.

  27. Hey CaptainFantastik:
too bad for your family & society that your parents did not have your same unique ability to predict the future, otherwise they would have predicted what a low life jackass you would one day become & done everyone a favor & had an abortion! Your post is the reason you don’t run a billion dollar company such as Nike (or anything close for that matter!)

  28. To the clueless ones talking about sweatshops – get with the times. Its 2010, not 1990.
All shoe and apparel companies use factory labor (and the companies contract out to the factories, they do not own them) to product their products. So, if you wear Nike, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance, etc apparel or footwear, chances are they are either made in the same factory as each other, or very near each other. The same can be said for non athletic apparel and footwear made in Southeast Asia, Central or Southern America, etc…
Also, take a look at fairlabor.org – you’ll see that many of these companies are doing their best to improve conditions and pay at these factories.
Then, take a look at yourself and what you’re wearing – is everything you’re wearing made in the good ol’ US of A? Not likely. So, get off your pseudo-high horses.
