Source: Saints freeze out WWL-TV

The source who sounded off anonymously on Tuesday regarding the Saints’ treatment of the local media requested anonymity due to a fear of retaliation by the Saints.  As it turns out, those fears were not unfounded.

Per another source in the New Orleans media who has asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, the Saints have removed WWL-TV from the team’s press-release list, and the Saints have informed WWL-TV that texts, e-mails, and calls from WWL-TV reporters won’t be returned.

We’re told there’s also a chance that WWL-TV will not receive credentials for the 2010 draft.

WWL-TV apparently incurred the wrath of the Saints by releasing the text of e-mail messages in which Saints P.R. director Greg Bensel seemed to complain about the media’s interest in the story regarding the 1,200 season-ticket holders who are being displaced due to some remodeling at the Superdome.

Making the development even more intriguing is the fact that WWL-TV is a CBS affiliate, and Saints owner Tom Benson owns the local FOX affiliate.

  1. The NFL isn’t some public service.
And if you are going to post private emails dont be surprised if the organization whos trust you violate decides that they dont want you around.

  2. Slow down on breaking news, Florio – only one “e” in “source”.
This is pure bullying. Pro teams, and even colleges, tend to do this. And in a town where the Saints rule (ESPECIALLY now) they can act like even bigger asses. Case in point, here.

  3. “Making the development even more intriguing is the fact that WWL-TV is a CBS affiliate, and Saints owner Tom Benson owns the local FOX affiliate.”
Complete conflict of interest and monopoly of the cities media… The federal government should step in immediately !

  4. Why is this shocking? Many organizations and businesses have confidentiality clauses in their emails, so if the reporter published a private email conversation, not surprising there would be consequences.
I do think the Saints should do everything they can, however, to try to get those fans in the dome for the opening game to see the championship banner dropped.

  5. Albeit it would be suicide for WWL, do not broadcast the games when CBS will broadcast the AFC opponent coming into the Superdome. The revenue lost would be enormous, but it would prove a point.

  6. the next steps…
    1. WWL calls CBS headquarters screaming
    2. CBS calls NFL screaming
    3. NFL calls Saints Front Office screaming
    4. Meeting occurs between WWL and Saints and they are somehow able to overcome issue and recognize that each has a job to do.

  7. I wonder if Florio’s sources are either Brian Allee-Walsh or Kenny Wilkerson. Those from the New Orleans area know that both have a personal axe to grind with the team, and both are allegedly local “media” who also could be sources trying to portray the team in a bad light to make themselves feel better.
Not that I agree with the Saints if they are “freezing out” a major media outlet in the New Orleans area – I don’t. But this is being made out to seem a lot worse based on “anonymous sources” – and I’d be willing to bet at least one of those “sources” is Walsh or Wilkerson.

  8. Put yourself in the shoes…..
Your private emails are made public in an attempt to embarrass you.
    Ding…Ding…Ding…
We have a loser here. and it’s WWL.

  9. Years of being irrelevant and now big bad bully Super Bowl champs. Enjoy any love the world did give you Saints because now you are known as the Barry Bonds of the NFL. A big blow hard asshole of an orginization. Guess if you put deodorant on a sweaty armpit it still stinks.

  10. the Saints organization is acting like an ass & this is coming from a big time Saints fan. They are embarrassed at the manner in which they’ve handled the loss of those 1200 fans’ seats & unfortunately seem to be taking the low road now instead of showing some class & handling the situation with any good sense. They know they screwed up with it all & are only making it worse. WWL has been a gigantic regional supporter of the Saints organization & this is childish & unprofessional behavior on the Saints organization part.

  11. Is this how the Saints are going to treat the L.A. media when they move there?
Dumbass- The saints have a good deal in New Orleans now. Besides The saints and vikings can’t coexist in the same city.

  12. It will be interesting if the freeze applies to Jim Henderson, who is WWL-TV’s sports director, main sports anchor person and, most importantly, the Saints’ play-by-play radio announcer. In the bad old days, Henderson wasn’t afraid to be critical of the Saints during the game broadcasts and on TV during the week. Dig into that, Florio.

  13. Those emails were NOT private. They were correspodence between a company and a news organization and nowhere in the transcripts does it say the phrase “off the record” Which anyone who deals with the media knows is the way to make sure somehing doesn’t get published. The saints didn’t even bother to say “on backgrond” which would have forced the station to attribute the email to an unannamed source. The saints PR guy didn’t use any of those phrases so the publication of the emails were fair game. It was his screw up.

  14. Oh, if there is one solace as a Colts fan for having played a terrible three quarters and losing to the Saints, it is that after the Colts Super Bowl win, they treated their fans better than ever and appreciated them. The Saints are using this opportunity to stiff their long time fan base. Karma is a b@#$&.

  15. Why would you write an ’embarrassing’ email to a TV STATION?? The Saints have no one to blame for this but their PR guy. The correct, professional thing to do would have been to keep his mouth shut, or complained to someone within the organization. But to complain to the media, ABOUT the media…that’s just asking for it.

  16. lol you should hear WWL “Sportstalk” Radio sometime. If you ever need a good laugh, listen to these clowns. Bobby Hebert was a good QB, but that was about it.
Hopefully this clears a path for another “sportstalk” channel in the area to take over (and hopefully they can steal Jim Henderson!)

  17. Give a ghetto bumb a thousand bucks and he thinks he owns the world. Give the Saints a championship and they are elite…what a f#cking joke

  18. The Saints might have gained some temporary satisfaction from banning the local CBS affiliate, but anyone that thinks that’s going to stand up is nuts. The network suits will be complaining to the NFL any day now, and will probably remind them that they pay millions of bucks for the TV contract; banning network affiliates is not an option whether they want to or not. BTW, as slder78 above notes, those emails are NOT private, they are on the record communication about the loss of seats that certain fans will suffer in 2010 at the Superdome, and the local media has every right to cover that story. Look for the league to fine the Saints some big time cash if they don’t reverse the ridiculous ban. I guess ‘jl’ above put it best in his earlier post.

  19. Too bad the Colts fans didn’t return the love. Only 11 “fans” showed up at the airport to welcome the team home from Miami.

  20. A fine example of a team who can’t handle success. They’ve been nothing but arrogant since their miracle finally happened, and it has rubbed off on their ‘fans’ as well.
Hope they have to wait another 40 years to experience it again

  21. Where the Commish on this one? Talk about making the league look bad. Especially after everything everyone did for the city and the Saints after Katrina.
And who do you think this is going to make the public side with when the season gets locked-out next year, or when the players are forced to strike?
Now I have to hate the Saints because they are now making me wish the Colts had won. Well, almost…

  22. When you release emails like they did, you are taking a chance
    I don’t blame the Saints

  23. Pervy Harvin. I make me laugh. How do those sour grapes taste. If you’re a good boy, we’ll let come take a picture next to our Lombardi Trophy. Until you win a Super Bowl, I hope you continue your whiny bitch tirades.

  24. Sean Payon is very arrogant as everyone in the media will attest to(with annonimity). If you can’t ask the same questions that the fans would ask, like why the double reverse or why the on sides kick….Why even have a press conferense at all.Payton would prefer all the media to show up in skirts and pom-poms and cheerlead all his decisions.I’m sorry,Sean…that’s not how it works…or don’t you believe in freedom of the press???????

  25. shame on mike for cusring like his hero sean to make a point….poor overpai prima donnas

  26. Pervy, a joke is fumbling the ball 5 times in the NFC championship game. Familiar with that? How many Super Bowls have the Vikings won again?

  27. I’m as huge a Saints fan as there is and the fans that are defending the team in this case are idiots.
Bensel had a simple question asked of him and instead of providing an answer like any professional PR man would, he had a little tantrum because the local press was covering a story that didn’t show the team’s management in the best light.
The bottom line is the Saints bungled the crap out of the 1,200 season ticket holders losing their seats. People can defend the team all they want but any decent PR team would have realized this was a major issue and would have created an awareness campaign to ensure those affected understood what was taking place. Instead, most fans of those sections were blindsided by the news. Terrible job by the Saints PR team. Judging from the unprofessional way Bensel and Payton have treated the media, it’s no surprise.
Football is not a matter of national security. The bogus injury reports and idiotic pettiness displayed over reporters simply doing their jobs is pathetic.
The Saints have a fabulous team and a great coach, but he definitely took a page out of the Dbag book from Parcells when it comes to dealing with the media. Get over yourselves. The media has a job to do. It’s their job to report the news. The reporter simply asked for the rows impacted and it took him several weeks and some snarky ass replies to get it.
Saints football management is an A+ but Benson’s idiocy still shines through at times when it comes to PR.

We have lost 4 Super Bowels douche.Have you been in 4? Oh yah, in MN the Vikings don’t snub the tv channels that report on them. In good times or bad. You see Bouche,we are educated up here!

  29. No, we currently have a 100% Super Bowl winning percentage. Not 0%. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? Lost 4 huh; wow always a bridesmaid…. Be proud though brother you’re in good company like the Browns, Lions, and Falcons. Keep your chin up, it will happen one day. Maybe.

  30. Pervy Harvin Grasping at straws- 0- 4 in superbowls… way to be proud of that douche stain.

Slder78 gets it. If anyone disagrees with this, they don’t understand how news or the media work.

  32. Lets all remember one thing this team is low how low they play below sea level
so they are right up there with whale shit
The boys in the home office will call the saints and say CB$ can say what ever they want and you the saints will like it
All you saint fans kill me your owner was trying to get the team out of that open sewer the NFL talked him into staying and sheep are kissing there ass.
I know its all about Katrina
The storm should have finished what it started and leveled that shit hole

  33. No wonder the Saints are nutty. Sean Payton looks like Lee Harvey Oswald,Kenney Chesney,Ben Stiller and Frankie Muniz all jerked in the same test tube to impregnate his Momma.

No surprise that a follower of a team that has never tasted sweet success has to resort to losing four Super Bowls as an argument in his defense. What a knob.

  35. Hey Florio …
If you were going to write about a true conflict of interest (not that made up crap about Dilfer), then this would be the one.
“Making the development even more intriguing is the fact that WWL-TV is a CBS affiliate, and Saints owner Tom Benson owns the local FOX affiliate.”
    Get busy …..

  36. Private email? A reporter asks a number of times for an answer to a question and the response by that loser was to chastise him for asking, like an arrogant jerk. I didn’t see anything in those emails that says “off the record”. Makes a guy think the Saints don’t quite get that they are in the entertainment business.
Saints should be reigned in by the league. I hope they are not light handed about it either.

  37. Percy Harvin should shut his mouth before the Saints toss him around like we did to his old ass QB.

  38. That sucks. Consumers of WWL will now have to form opinions on their own instead of parroting what they have been spoonfed in the past.

  39. to the guy comparing the saints to Barry Bonds: Seriously? Are you that pathetic? You’re comparing a habitual steroid user who cheated in order to pump up his numbers to a NFL franchise who is remodeling their stadium therefore having to remove some seats? I’d love to see the sick world that you put your family through, I’m sure it’s heartwarming.
To the guy saying how great the colts treated their fans: Yeah and when your team lost the superbowl you had all of 11 fans show up to show support at the airport. Good point!
Pervy Harvin: I love your posts. Especially the one where you stated you lost 4 superbowls, as if that’s something to be proud of. It just shows you can get the girl but can’t get her off, so you end up looking like the dweeb that keeps on losing the girl to other more masculine, attractive men. Your team is a feminine, submissive team that allows other teams mount it and doesn’t put up much fight, I rather think your team enjoys being mounted and pounded, I know Favre did!

  40. First of all Bigbluefan, you are one class act. If you are typical of your city (sounds like that great city of Indianapolis, home of the losing Super Bowl Colts) then your city should experience the same thing and see how it feels to be us. Secondly Mr Harvin, you in your ignorance apparently don’t know a redundant question when you hear one. The poster asked you how many SBs has your loser team won knowing that it is in fact, ZERO. It seems like all you have left to cling to are insults about Sean Payton’s looks. What a clown. I hope we kick the living **** out of your team once again this year.

  41. “Give a ghetto bumb a thousand bucks and he thinks he owns the world.”
Give Pervy Harvin a dictionary and a thesaurus and he uses them to prop up his inflatable date.

  42. lost in all of this is the fact that none of you actually know what the Saints are doing about the 1200 lost seats.
as a team that has constantly pointed towards the fans as inspiration, i wouldn’t be surprised if those 1200 folks have some of the sweetest seats in the house when they drop that Championship banner.
there’s a reason this is called the “rumor mill”. it’s definitely not the best place to get actual news…

  43. there’s a reason this is called the “rumor mill”. it’s definitely not the best place to get actual news…
But WWL-TV is a good place to get news, and a reporter pursuing news by contacting the parties involved is good news practice. Why should New Orleanians have to wonder and hope to find out how the Saints are going to handle the loss of these fans’ seats, on the whim of the organization?
The replies from the Saints were flip, rude and dismissive. And banning this news station is worse.
Here’s something that’s not a rumor: the Saints are financed with large pots of Louisiana tax dollars. That obligate them to behave with some transparency.

  44. The New Orleans Saints are the defending NFL World Champions. That gives them the right to treat anybody anyway they want too. Looks like WWL had it coming. They’ve always sucked anyway. No loss for the Saints. WWL needs the Saints more than the Saints need them. Wow, i never thought the Saints winning the Super Bowl would be SO much fun. Its the first time in Saints history that the off season has been even more fun than the regular season, (thanks to the haters). So keep hating boys. We now get more attention and press coverage than the Cowgirls, both Mannings, the cheating Patriots and Lord Favre all put together……ha ha……and remember, there’s no such thing as “Bad Publicity”…….personally i don’t care if those whiny 1200 morons ever see another Saints game……for all we know they may have been targeted for a reason anyway…….ha ha….

  45. This reaction seems a little petulant of the Saints administration because it’s STUPID to think that the SB Champions pulling the rug out from under 1200 season ticket holders is going to just blow over in one news cycle. If they’re going to make such a move, they should expect to take a commensurate PR hit and to have to do a little bit of work on damage control.
But anyone out there who thinks that this administrative/PR issue reflects anything on the football team or the fans or even the coaching staff, is just a tremendous f***ing idiot (Pervy Harvin and Big Blue, your ears are burning). (Saints moving to L.A.? Are you f***ing serious?!?)
Anyway, bank it: my Saints will repeat in XLV.

This was not on the “whim” of the organization. The renovations are part of the deal between the Saints & Louisiana that was announced in April of 2009. The State insisted on $85 million worth of improvements.
The plans include a complete lower bowl redesign providing improved sight line and adding 3,100 sideline seats; widening the Plaza Level concourse by 40 ft.; adding more concession areas and restrooms; building new Premium Club lounges under the Plaza Level seating; adding 16 suites on the 300 level and moving the Press Box to the Terrace.
The stories that I have read about the 1200 seats has never mentioned this.
