Mark Brunell blocked from joining Jets by Jason Taylor

Veteran quarterback Mark Brunell wants to join the Jets, according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post. But Brunell can’t do so until linebacker Jason Taylor makes up his mind.

The reason arises from the “Final Eight Plan.” The Jets can sign only one unrestricted free agent, given the recent decision of kicker Jay Feely to sign with the Cardinals. They can’t sign a second UFA until a second unrestricted free agent joins a new team, and Taylor has dibs on the spot created by Feely.

Signing Brunell, who won a Super Bowl ring with the Saints in 2009, could be an indication that the team plans to move on from Kellen Clemens, a second-round pick in 2006 who wants to be a starter and who would be the starter if he had generated a passer rating of higher than 60.9 when he finally got the chance.
