Steelers "called everyone" regarding Santonio trade

The biggest question in the wake of the abrupt decision by the Steelers to trade receiver Santonio Holmes is whether the Jets were the only team in the mix.

They weren’t.

Per a league source, the Steelers “called everyone” regarding the possibility of trading for Holmes.  (The source then acknowledged that the Ravens likely weren’t called, and possibly not the Browns or the Bengals.  The Eagles don’t see a potential problem with calling any of those three teams.)

The process began, we’re told, on Friday and accelerated over the weekend.  And no one else was seriously interested.

Still, as pointed out in a coming edition of PFT Daily, the Steelers should have shipped him to the NFC, even if it meant only taking a sixth-round pick or a seventh-round pick.

  1. “The Eagles don’t see a potential problem with calling any of those three teams.”
This makes up for yesterdays turkey & wilted lettuce saga.

  2. Once the shock wears off, this trade wasn’t so bad for the Steelers. Getting a 5th round pick for a player who will play a maximum of 12 games this season before walking in free agency was the right move. Now I just hope the Steelers give a shout out to the unhappy fans by making some serious moves on draft day. 4 picks in the 5th round makes for some good ammunition in rounds 1-3.

  3. Good thing he wasn’t accused of raping 2 women, otherwise he might still be in Pittburgh. #themoreyouknow

  4. In light of that it is a wonder they got a 5th rounder for him.
I cant imagine that the Jets werent aware that Colbert was running through the rolodex…

  5. I still don’t buy it. A fifth round pick? Likely won’t even make the team. Of course you give that up. You mean Oakland, KC, Detroit, Jacksonville, and any of the teams starved for some quick success wouldn’t have outbid a LATE 5th round pick for 12 games of serviceable work?
Something ain’t right. They would have done better keeping him and getting a 3rd round comp pick.

  6. Wow – I can hardly believe, in the space of about a week, the Steelers have dumped the last two guys who scored Super Bowl winning TD’s for the organization – Fast Willie Parker and Santonio Holmes. You guys lit up the sky with your brilliance. Good luck Santonio – may you tiptoe inside the lines many more times.
I hope we don’t have to wait 26 more years to find guys like them again.

  7. No. They should have benched him and collected their compensation pick when he left the following year. That way they could have gotten similar or more value, and he would have been of no use to everyone else this year.

  8. Why ship him to the NFC when we can stick the alleged Mary Jane lover on a AFC competitor. Holmes is really, really good, but the Steelers know what they are doing. Mike Wallace is dynamite and he will compensate for a year with Hines Ward. They have solid veterans for the number 3 role. The Steelers only were going to have Holmes for 12 more games ever and would lose him to Free Agency. You can’t keep everyone in the NFL and the Steelers understand this.
Now, expect the Steelers to make some good moves on draft day. They have a bevy of picks and they will grab what they need.
In reality, it is not really a bad move for the
Steelers, even tho it is only a 5th rounder. If you take the whole “message sent thing”, Holmes free agency this year (lot of other guys need signed), Mike Wallace, the outstanding 3rd rounder with jets in his shoes from last year, it will work out well.

  9. I’ve never seen the Steelers so flusterd before in my football watching life. As it stands right now I say AFC North Bengals, Ravens, Browns, Steelers. Crazyness….

  10. The phones were ringing since Friday, and none of your sources tipped you off!!??
Also, why no acknowledgment from either club? Even the Jets web site says not confirmed.

  11. stillerz: rd 5 picks have almost no value as comparred to rounds 1-3. i mean 4 rd5 picks doesnt move you up 3 picks in the 1st. with as much as we have been missing on latter rounds, i am not pumped at all.

  12. If the Squeelers didn’t call the Ravens, Bengirls, or Clowns, then unlike the Eagirls opinion of “the guy drafted instead of Ricky Williams” who found it ok to trade him to the division rival Deadskins, they still feel San Antonio can play. If a former Super Bowl MVP only nets them a 5th rounder, what would they get in return for Rapistburger? Probably a turkey sandwich with wilt……oh nevermind.

  13. They dialed 212-EVE-RY01,
which is a hot line to company who solicit, “We PAY CASH for former first rounds WR’s”.

  14. they should have shipped himto the
    – CFL for some maple sirup or
    – Lingerie League for a lap dance
my bet is that the NYPD will catch him with weed in a New York nightclub before he is allowed to play, and ther is also a chance that he will drops his bong and injuries his foot.

  15. why do the eagles continually get ripped for trading in the division. the pats did it years ago, sending bledsoe to buffalo. pretty sure that worked out just fine. something about bad organizations staying bad, regardless of overhyped qbs.

  16. There is no truth to the Leon Washington rumors. Holmes is a bum, he will get exposed in New York. No more hiding in Pittsburgh

  17. oh man now the JETS will definately win the SuperBowl…lets see they trade for a CB who has more kids then INTs last year, sign a washed up RB when they could have kept Jones. sign up for the HBO show, trying to sign JT, sign a loser but talented WR…I love it, can you say 7-9 for the most HIGHLY OVERRATED tean in the entire NFL. I cant wait to see this team self implode when the D will suck ass and their “FRANCHISE” QB has a HUGE sophmore jinx and LT winds up with less then 400 total yards – It gonna be great!

  18. Geez Holmes, next time rape a couple chicks and you’ll be let off scott free. You can’t be throwin drinks in b!tches faces. WTF you thinkin? Yeah don’t call us about that bum. We don’t want him. We have enough trouble makers on our team as it is right? lol

  19. called everyone?
    steelers: hello?
al davis: is he black and really fast?
steelers: hes fast, but hes actually decent at football
al davis: oh, then im not interested (click)

  20. “Still, as pointed out in a coming edition of PFT Daily, the Steelers should have shipped him to the NFC, even if it meant only taking a sixth-round pick or a seventh-round pick.”
Its amazing that a guy who has never played the sport, never coached a team, never managed one aspect of an NFL franchise and usually only has a few details of the situation continues to try and play the role Matt Millen.

  21. What difference does it make that he’s still in the AFC? The Steelers aren’t going to contend this year anyway.

  22. Attention Marino13, you have problems of your own. Holmes would have been the best reciever you guys have, old or injured running backs, and a Defense thats not that good….you guys will be lucky to see 7-9

  23. The jets are the new raiders and are becoming the least likable team in the league

  24. Good thing the Bucs didn’t get involved. They are determined to field a high school receiving corps this season.

  25. Jets fans must be feeling a little bit queasy this morning… every year they and the Redskins contend for the “Best NFL Upgrades on Paper” Award.
Every year they both fall FAR short of the Super Bowl.
Picking up LT and Holmes must have them feeling like this is Groundhog’s Day with the same outcome looming once again. I’m more than happy to give them the award for most improved team on paper – knowing that no games are played on paper.
But overall I don’t think this is a bad trade… they’ve rented a talented player, and a turd of a person, for 12 regular season games in return for a 5th round pick. Given his 4 game suspension, off-field issues and expiring contract I’d say the Steelers did ok.
Although I don’t see Holmes assaulting Jet players the way he did the mother of his children, his “wake and bake” work ethic could have a negative impact in the locker room – but seeing as he’s entering a contract year he’ll probably be well behaved.

Not really, it’s just hard being spread out so thin due To Florio’s near insane f*cking barrage of like 10 Steelers articles already in one day (er, morning).
He’s just getting in his last shots before Ben’s “No charges will be filed” announcement @ 2pm…

  27. Let’s be honest here. The similarities between Holmes and Plaxico Burress are significant. And we all know how well that ended. Plaxico definitely cost the Steelers a higher pick for Holmes.

  28. If only they could have traded him after the draft, they could have gotten a much higher pick next year.

  29. my guess is…
    with the latest signings of
    – LT
    – Cro “i got more kids then the USA staates” Martie
    & Santonio “Weedz” Holmes
…the NEW JERSEY JESTS will be able to win the
    NFL PRESEASON SUPERBOWL again
    woooow, what a franchise
too bad that the Jests offense will suck balls without any running game.. Shanyce Green and LTee both suck…and i really hope the jests are dump enough to move Leon Washington (the only true playmaker left)

sorry were not obsessed with the Jets like they are with us…. but i will say… they have one hell of a team and its going to be a dog fight with them for the AFC East title

    Quoted for TRUTH.

  32. uh, when a guy tweets like S H did, I can imagine Colbert having to call all of the teams.
But steelers frazzled??? they went 9-7 and they lost those 7 games by a total of 35 points. 5 points a game – so Tomlin had the team in a position to win all of those losses. That to me speaks to individuals making plays.
tweak here and there. Maybe not the year they wanted obviously, but not warranting a frazzled definition.

  33. “Let’s be honest here. The similarities between Holmes and Plaxico Burress are significant. And we all know how well that ended. Plaxico definitely cost the Steelers a higher pick for Holmes.”
As bad as the Plaxico mess ended, and I think even in hindsight Giants would do it all over again. After all they did win a super bowl, and didn’t even have to pay him after he got thrown in Rikers.

  34. Attn”jetfan42″ – no shit that the fish have problems” -but I’ll take Ricky williams over any of your back hands down. As far as WR goes yes there are issues but I Im sure I will still see the sucky Ginn run by the overated Revis again and again. Im sure Davis/Smith will be better then him after their rookie year. Thing is they dont play in NY and get the attention that NY teams get. Remeber the Phins won the div 2 years ago and finished under 500 the next, mind you losing three winable games that they shit the bed against and two of those teams played in the SB.

Dude worry about your own F’in team you dwell so much on ours for what? Your going to get an ulcer, don’t worry about Sanchez, he’ll be ok without you, you should really worry about Ireland, and Parcels and the rest of your regime you guys like to call them.

  36. “The source then acknowledged that the Ravens likely weren’t called”
HAHAHA the Steelers are TERRIFIED of the Ravens. HAHAHA

  37. How silly. It’s bad enough that we only got a 5th-round pick for a receiver worthy of at least a second-round pick. You think we should have downgraded to a 7th-round or 8th-round pick just to ship him to the other conference? Why? We’ve got no bad blood with the Jets. They’re not in our division. Shoot, they got Faneca! This is hardly comparable to the Vikes getting Favre. You are really getting annoying, Goob.

  38. is he not good or something?
i thought he was a star. i don’t know much about the steelers

  39. So the Chiefs, Jags, Rams, Bears, Cowboys, skins, broncos woudl nto give upa 5th round pick for Holmes? Many say Pitt should have gotten more, however with 4 5th round picks, do not be surprised if 2 of these picks and a 2nd rounder is not offered to a team drafting in the top 5 on Friday so the Steelers can get a WR…..Golden Tate! ( if available)
