Quentin Groves says he's been traded

If coaches can give hints about their draft picks on Twitter, players may as well break trades there.

Jaguars defensive end Quentin Groves left the following message Wednesday afternoon:

“Duval County…. I
LOVE U GUYS…thanks for all your support…New Starts=New
Beginnings…OAKLAND HERE I COME!!!!

Groves also changed his avatar to the Raiders insignia.  No one from either team has confirmed Groves’ news, but the account has been verified previously as Groves’ account.

It’s also no surprise Groves will be an ex-Jaguar.  The unproductive second round pick from 2008 has been rumored to be on his way out in Jacksonville for a while.

UPDATE: The trade has been confirmed by the Associated Press.  The Jaguars got a fifth-round pick.

  1. He sucks. His career highlight is an interception of Mark Sanchez that he ran back to the five and tripped over his own feet. The next play there was a bothced handoff and the Jets got the ball back. Thankfully the Jags won or Groves would have been the goat.

  2. Good riddance. If this is false you have filled me with massive amounts of false hope Florio. How’s that for your conscience? Best of luck in Oakland though.

  3. But did he say anything about Roethlisberger? I cant imagine there would be a story on this site that doesnt contain a reference to him somehow…

  4. Guess we can finally cross Jason Pierre-Paul off the list at pick #8 – Roethlisberger or Iupati…?

  5. another great acquisiton by Al Davis!
I guess its better than drafting future superstars like Jamarcus Russell and KGB.
Draft choices are hazardous to the Raiders organization.

  6. Keep stackin’-up the D son. ‘Stackin’-up the D.
    ‘Nation!

  7. What better team for him than the Raiders, I hope they also get Big Ben…….lol

  8. I still think he is better than Harvey. He is not as big but I guarantee he had more tackles, sacks, hurries and caused turnovers per play than Derrik Harvey in the last two seasons. The problem with Groves is he can beat a guy on one play and then get the hell beaten out of him physically for the next 5 plays. I wonder what value they got for him. Probably swapping positions in the 6th round maybe.

  9. the Raiders are well served by trading their picks instead of picking guys like the fat QB, injured RB & cannot catch the ball WR

  10. Whoa. As a Jag fan, I’m shocked. I still wish him the best of luck, though, just don’t trip on your own shoes, next time.

  11. His pro numbers aren’t that great, but it really went downhill once the Jags switched to a 3-4 defense. He’s young and put up good numbers in college… hopefully he can do it again in a 4-3 scheme.

  12. raper raper raper raper, I thought this site was about raper all the time, come on Flo, ur slippin!!!!

  13. now all we need to do is draft McClain, and trade the second rd pick to the skins for Haynesworth.
Then the raiders will have a top 5 d

  14. I heard from a “source” that an NFL player said Roethlisberger’s name in public.

  15. Do you think the scouts even do there job for the Raiders or just get 40 times and leave because everything else is pointless. Pretty soon you will see a job listing in the oakland papers
Needed: Guy who can use a stop watch, pen and paper and overhead projector. No prior experience necessary.

  16. I hope they only are giving up a 7th for him. If I find out that they traded a 3 or 4 for him I am going to go crazy. I will also go crazy (just like last year when they took DHB instead of Crabtree, I punched 10 holes in my wall) if they take Bruce Campbell at 8, also dont want them to take Bulaga. The last overhyped tackle from IOWA didnt work out so well for them. Thier 1st 3 picks need to be an OT, DT & a MLB but if Tony Pike is still there when they pick in the 3rd they gotta take him.

  17. It is funny the amount of hate commenters give on this site yet they read every article posted. Get back to work folks.

  18. Good luck Q
He was pretty solid on special teams. He’d get MAULED with his hand down though.

  19. Al Davis is working hard to give away every 2010 draft pick.
He never works on Thursday nights – can’t miss Survivor.

  20. Started 16 games last year as a rookie, don’t see how this could be a bad move. The Raiders get a lot of flack, some deserved, but man this team always tries to get better.

  21. Please dont post anything if you dont know what your talking about. Groves is not even close to being better then Harvey. A) He caused no pressure from his side which minimized the number of sacks Harvey had. B) You could run at him no problem.

  22. His pro numbers aren’t that great, but it really went downhill once the Jags switched to a 3-4 defense. He’s young and put up good numbers in college… hopefully he can do it again in a 4-3 scheme.

  23. I’m not really clear the motivation behind this move.
This makes 3 undersized DE/LB converts in Trevor Scott, Kameron Wimbly and now Groves.
If nothing else, there will be good competition.
Still, lots of holes to be filled, and addressing all of it with draft rookies will only prolong the rebuilding stage.

  24. UPDATE: The trade has been confirmed by the Associated Press. The Saints got a fifth-round pick.
Why did the Saints get a 5th rd pick

  25. uhh… your update says the Saints got a 5th rd pick??? maybe you should update your update to the ‘Jaguars’…

  26. Dude, I don’t know how but if the Saints got a 5th rounder for the Jaguars trading Groves to the Raiders then that whole front office deserves a raise.

So….I’m curious. How did the Jags trade a guy to the Raiders and yet the Saints got a fifth-round pick?
    That Saints GM is GENIUS!!

  28. I find it interesting that the Saints got a 5th round pick for a player who played for the Jaguars

  29. Your update makes no sense, Rosenthal. How did the Saints receive a 5th rounder for a Jaguars player?
On another note I think this trade is alright for both teams. He still has potential and might fit the Raiders

  30. @Common Sense
Groves has 7 career starts and was not a rookie last year. He has a total of 2.5 career sacks.
To those who said he was used improperly – he got got mauled as a 4-3 DE and he was ineffective a 3-4 standup rusher. As a DE he got run over consistently for 5-7 yards a pop. As a rusher he couldn’t get to the QB. So I’m not sure what other ways there are to use a small pash rusher.
2.5 sacks in 2 years. Good college player without whatever it takes to be an NFL player (hard worker, but that’s not enough).

  31. —“UPDATE: The trade has been confirmed by the Associated Press. The Saints got a fifth-round pick”—
SAINTS????? you mean the jax, right?
not a good day for team florio, huh? first no “road games east of Denver for the Raiders”, now this… better take it easy on the 420… =)

  32. Poor guy. Its like heading to a death camp. Lets hope he makes the best of it and bilks Al for millions of benchwarming money.

  34. Waufle ( Oak line coach )will make him into a baller ! god knows the jags have never had a pass rusher that DL coach sucks

  35. Very nice pickup not really expensive. He’ll florish with Seymour teaching him like he did with Matt Shaughnessy.
—“UPDATE: The trade has been confirmed by the Associated Press. The Saints got a fifth-round pick”—
I know this is just a little mistake and it has been changed correctly. But, if Florio says that you never erase anything you write, it would be better to keep it that way.
    Just do as you preach.
    Still, i love your stuff!!!

  36. Efyouseekay, seeing as how this will be jacksonvilles first season with this d-line coach, I’m no sure what you’re talking about. Tony brackens says hello and to enjoy both your wins this year.

  37. The Saints just received a fourth round pick for Santonio Holmes and a sixth rounder for Tony Scheffler.
By the way, are all the HopenChangers who cried, “Racism!” when Vick was suspended also going to complain that Roethlisberger is being punished just because he is black?
Or is Roethlisberger being punished because Vick is black?
Where is the self-pity crowd now?

  38. Raiderlove,
we scrapped the 3-4 right before the Chiefs game last season. Once Heyward went down with the broken leg against the Colts we quickly found out we did not have the depth or personnel to run the 3-4. A main reason for that was that Groves did not develop as quickly as hoped. He kinda had a minor incident last year where he got into a fender bender on the way to the team plane for the Seattle game and left the scene. That caused a little bit of grief for him with the community thinking here we go again. Then he never hit his stride and ended up on special teams while a few undrafted FAs passed him by on the depth chart.
It’s a win win for all involved. Jags get one more pick, and a 5th rounder which is good; Groves gets a fresh start with no expectations. And the Raiders make another classic move where anything other than mediocrity is a bonus. At least he didn’t go out burning bridges, I’ll give him that.
In conclusion, best of luck to Quentin, hope he can figure it out in Oakland.

  39. @ Raider B:
A real fanbase, huh? Did Raider fans even know that the Jags had more asses in seats last year than the Raiders did? I’ll bet you didn’t because Raider fan just isn’t that bright. Everybody talks about the Jags’ problems selling tickets, but the Raiders were even worse. They had just as many blackouts as the Jags did, but the Jags had more ticket sales. Enjoy that real fanbase.
