Report: Raiders, Steelers reached a quick impasse on Big Ben

To the extent that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is feeling nervous about an Alcatraz exile, he can exhale a bit today.

Steve Corkran of the Oakland Tribune reports that the Raiders contacted the Steelers about a possible trade, that the Raiders weren’t willing to give up the No. 8 pick in the draft, and the Steelers weren’t willing to throw in the No. 18 pick in order to sweeten the deal.

So unless the Steelers will take Oakland’s second-round pick, it’s not going to happen.

  1. Where are the jokers that were saying Oakland would give up 2 1st rounders?
No way they would even give up one, never mind two.

  2. Ben is worth the #8 pick outright. This proves Davis’ utter stupidity. No soup for you!

  3. makes no sense, oakland dont know how to use draft picks anyway, why not use it for a proven qb that has already won 2 superbowls and a guy who has gotten better and better every year, but hey thats why the raiders have been bottom feeders for so long, didnt get that way making stellar draft picks, but hey good luck with jamarcus bustell

  4. Or maybe, the raiders were never interested and this reporter is just covering his tail.

  5. This was all PR to make the Rooneys look better.
But, at the same time, you can’t get value for Ben right now given the suspension and the off-field issues.
    Tough spot for the franchise.
I bet the Goodell wants him to land somewhere like Jacksonville. No fans. No TV games. Isn’t one of the “legacy franchises”. No local sports media to ask pesky questions. Even less to do than in Pittsburgh. An ideal fit.

  6. i’m rooting for this trade, but i admit that it would be a total shocker if it did happen…..if it does happen the Patriots are looking at a 25 – 32 overall first round selection next year…..btw….f**k the Patriots!!

  7. hes definately worth a top ten pick with his talent..whit his problrms weighed in in not so sure.

  8. as much as Ben is a tool.. he’s worth the 8th pick skillwise.. he can completely turn the retarded raiders around

  9. If this is true Al Davis is dumber than I thought. I hate Ben with a passion (before the incidents) but he is most certainly a top 5 QB in this league. Given the Raiders track record on first round picks I would think this would be a no brainer.

  10. First off the Raiders do not have two first round picks to trade.
Here’s to Jamarcus Russell remaining the Raiders starting QB for the 2010 season.

  11. I guess the Raiders think that Steeler brass is like the Steeler secondary—clueless. Hey Raiders fans, if you could play the Steelers without Polamalu 6 or 7 times a season, you might have a .500 record.

Maybe you can explain why no other team has offered a first rounder, Karl?
    Never mind the 8th overall.

  13. Somebody show this option to Al davis, please, Take Ben, make your tean better, take pitts 18 then call miami, trade their 12 for your 18 get the player you wanted in that spot, give miami your 18 and another second round pick and you got a pro bowl , Superbowl MVP qb Mind you, and another hi pick and your only getting the best you can get for your pick. Proven talent and a very good high pick, win win for you and miami…literally… It would be stupid of them not to consider it…

  14. not even a 1st round pick for a 2-time super bowl winning qb? haha what a n f’n joke.,..who does al davis think the rooneys are, HIM?
Go waste that 8th overall pick on a bust Al..Steelers back in the Super Bowl in 3 years or less, guaranteed

  15. THAT my friends, is one large reason why the Raiders SUCK!
Last night on ESPN, someone called Ben a Top – 5 NFL QB. The Football Scientist corrected them, and said NO, Ben is Top 3, behind only Manning and Brady.
So, your team is horrid year in and year out, you have fat, earringed DuhRussell as your lame QB, and you hold tight on your deal for Roethlisberger. You say, no, no, we think we can do better for ourselves with Number 8. It can’t be that Al Davis cares anything at all about character. So that leaves only one other conclusion left. The same conclusion that is constantly put out their analyst upon analyst. The same reason Heyward-Bey made more money last year than you will make in your life. THE RAIDERS ARE FREAKING STUPID. And you wonder why there were talks of trying to make Al Davis sell the team…………………………………………..LOL.

  16. Karl, you’re retarded! Roflsberger is worth a 2nd rd pick maybe. If he goes to Oakland, they might as well start Jemarcus Russell. He’s a fat ass that only won because he had solid defense backing him up. Have fun rooting for a rapist!!

  17. Karl, you’re retarded! Roflsberger is worth a 2nd rd pick maybe. If he goes to Oakland, they might as well start Jemarcus Russell. He’s a fat ass that only won because he had solid defense backing him up. Have fun rooting for a rapist!!

  18. The Rooney’s are ignorant if they think they will get a 1st for BR, let alone a Top 10.
Maybe a late 1st, but NOBODY is going to get conned into giving up a Top 10 for someone who keeps putting himself into situations that makes “a team that has higher standards than their peers” look bad.
If you want him gone, you have to take a late first or early to mid 2nd. You will get no more!

  19. The Steelers are idiotic for thinking this damaged clown is worth more than McNabb in a trade. He’s younger but yet somehow seems MUCH closer to the end of his career than 5 is.
They should be thrilled to get a 2nd round pick for Rapistberger and settle for a 3rd.

  20. Ben is not worth the #8 pick – in any other system dissimilar from Pittsburgh’s, without that defense and their run game, he is a mediocre QB. He is great at extending a play, however.
Remember that Cowher had to shorten his playbook for Big Ben during his first 2 seasons because he couldn’t comprehend the whole thing.

  21. As if Oakland is going to pick anyone decent with the # 8 overall pick anyway. They might as well give it up, because if they keep it they will just waste it on some stiff who can’t play. Better to get Roethlisberger than the next Heyward-Bey.

  22. Yeah, why trade for a 28 year old two time super bowl winning quarterback when you can spend more money on a rookie who will probably suck (Jamarcus Russell, Darius Heyward Bey, etc)? Face it, the Raiders don’t draft well and they have a shot at a real quarterback. Likewise, I think the Steelers should give some more thought to the 20 years between Bradshaw and Ben.

  23. raiders take the deal, trade the 18 pick to miami give them your 18 for their 12, get rothlisberger, give miami a 2nd rd and you should be sitting pretty…no brainer deal if miami would be willing to take it…duh

  24. Now that it’s been revealed Rothlisberger has a gray colored penis, playing for the old guy would seem “natural.”

  25. I don’t get it…The Raiders are willing to burn a 1st round pick on Heyward Bey, but not for a 2 time superbowl winning QB that can turn their framchise around instantly? Sure, he’ll be suspended to start, but when he returns that Raider team could be completely different.
Hey RaiderRoy…my condolences for getting fleeced by the Patriots for your 2011 1st rounder. If he it makes you feel any better, Al fleeced the Pats for a 3rd and 5th this year for Burgess.

  26. This is so out of character. Usually the Raiders are everbody’s b’itch. I mean the Pats reamed them for next year’s ‘top 10’ pick. All the Steelers are asking for is the 8th pick and the best CB in the league for their serial rapist.
I can’t believe the Raiders didn’t bend over and spread them like they usually do. Wow. So unexpected.

  27. This just shows how out of touch with reality Al has become. It is understandable that most teams want no part of Roethlisberger, at any price, because despite being a great QB, he is toxic from a public relations view. He could take a team to the playoffs that has not been there in many years and the stands might be empty, because many fans would refuse to support a team that condoned his behavior. However, once a team decides that his skills on the field are enough to risk an adverse fan reaction, then the #8 pick in the draft is a bargain price.

  28. Ben was NEVER that good to start off with. So, he’s got two Super Bowl rings…..big deal!! Trent Dilfer has one too!
Oakland is a stupid franchise but not stupid enough to trade picks for a guy who is this close to being suspended a year from the game. The guy obviously has a problem but he’s too stupid to seek help. YOu haven’t heard the end of Ben and his problems.

  29. Makes sense that the Raiders wouldn’t do this trade, no way is Ben fast enough to waste the 8th overall pick on. Maybe if they threw in Ike Taylor.

But it won’t happen and we will get a 1 – 10 pick from your team.

  31. To the Ravens fans-You will win the division the next 5-6 seasons. The Steelers have NOOO chance. Big Ben is NOT a big game QB. Polamalu, Harrison and company make for a lousy defense.

  32. As a Broncos fan I am glad this deal reached an impasse. Ben would make the Raiders much better and giving up the 8th pick in the draft for a QB like Ben is well worth it, even with the 4-6 game suspension. Hopefully Al stands his ground because I don’t want the Broncos to have to compete with Ben for the next 10 years.

  33. Karl, you stupid f*ck. You wouldnt know whats good for your team if it hit you in the head. And there is no way the Raiders pick next year becomes a 25-32 slot, no way possible dumbass. Enjoy Jamarcus Russel for another year loser.

  34. Anyone who thinks there was any basis in reality that the Steelers were going to trade Ben is an idiot….especially to the Raiders @ #8.

  35. I thought the trade should be Roethlisberger and Pick 18 for Pick 8 and Pick 39.
The raiders will probably be able to draft whoever it is at 18 that they were going to draft at 8 anyways. Bruce Campbell, Mike Iupati and Taylor Mays should all be there. Dez Bryant is a possibility to fall to.

  36. Why trade Ben if your not going to pick a QB? Bradford will be gone by the 8th pick, by most accounts Jimmy Clausen is as big a jerk as Ben, and McCoy will be there at 18 when the Steelers pick. Keep Ben take McCoy at 18 (unless you are convinced Dixon is going to be special) then when Ben rapes (allegedly) his next victim, or gets his next concussion, or falls off his tricycle or whatever you have your replacement ready to go.

  37. There is no team that is going to give up a top 10 pick for the Raper straight up. Talent wise he may be worth it but with his baggage, he is only one beer and a teenager away from being suspended for a year or more and maybe even spending some time in the clinker. He’s not worth that type of gamble.

You’re a doosh bro. I never heard that and plus, Ben was a ROOKIE when Cowher was the coach. Of course the playbook is going to be simpler. He’s a top 5 QB (who single handedly won many games for the Steelers) and totally worth the Raiders #8 pick and Nnamdi Asomugha. If I were Oakland, I’d do that trade today. That gives the Raiders a chance to win now (well after Week 5 at least).

  39. The Steelers would be nuts to trade him. It’ll be a tough year for him this year, but with time (and more NFL players being charged and suspended – it’s going to happen) this will blow over.

  40. Why not trade the Rapist, then throw in the Dog Killer to make sure the deal works for all parties?
Maybe they could even get Marvin Harrison out of retirement and he could shoot everyone in sight….

  41. I cant even believe that they wouldn’t give up #8 for a pick that was #11 and 2 time Superbowl Champion. It’s one thing to say they have morals and Ben has bad character issues. Than it’s another thing to say he isn’t worth it. Wow, their sitting on #1 overall Jamarcus Russell who has been a bust since day one. This team really doesn’t care about there fans. What an awesome consolation prize they could release Russell and get Ben and they decline. Gooood Moveee Raiders I see your Jamarcus Russell and raise you a Joey Harrington.

  42. pittsburgh is hallucinating. The lack of an o-line has beat the crap out of big ben. add the baggage and loss of 6 games and he is not worth more than a late 2nd rounder

  43. so the raiders are dumb for not getting big ben? and the are dumb for wanting to trade for him? and they are dumb for not giving up a top 10 pick for him?
    which is it?

How refreshing, a little common sense.
Hopefully, all the kids are off to school now.

  45. The Raiders would be smart to make the trade. They’re the only team where outward fans could say that he fits the Raiders image and have it not be a TOTAL slam. Talking about the silver and black, badboy thing they and their fans seem to embrace.

  46. Are you kidding me Al?!?!?! You’ve seen what draft picks gone wrong in fukin jabustus!! Why not use a pick on a proven (yet raping) player!?!??
I think the moth balls have went to his brain!

  47. It will never happen, but if the other 3 teams in the AFC North were smart, they’d each send the Raiders a 3rd rounder for half a bag of peanuts just to give the Raiders enough ammunition to get Roethlisberger out of the division.

  48. Nobody hates the Stealers more than me and no one thinks less of Big Ben than me, but you gotta be kidding me. Is there a player, let alone a QB in this draft that you know for a certainty is better than Big Ben? I don’t think so. Ben would make any team better immediately for years to come. I can’t believe more teams aren’t jumping on this get-it-while-it’s-radioactive offer.

  49. IF this truly did happen, it was hardly an “impasse.”
You might better describe it this way: Raiders asked Steelers if they would like to be raped. Steelers told Raiders to “Go f*uck yourselves.”
It ties with what Bouchette wrote yesterday (paraphrasing)” The national media frenzy over trade rumors should be ignored. Teams are calling the Steelers with low-ball offers and a trade simply ain’t happening.
But for guys like Mike, such crap pays the bills.

  50. Florio,
You are not funny. Stop referring to the Raiders as “prison” or “alcatraz.” It is unbecoming of any wannabe journalist to disrespect a professional sports organization in such a manner. Besides, I dont know if you noticed but the Raiders beat the Steelers last year when the Steelers were supposedly going to “unleash hell”.
Get over your hatred for the Raiders. Save that sort of nonsense for the local beat writers, and Denver Donkey fans that post on Raider links.
And if you think by disparaging the Raiders you are getting more hits to this website, you are wrong. You would have far more hits if you were neutral and reported stories accurately.
    P.S. Richard Seymour says hello.

  51. raiders would be stupid not to trade for the 8 spot, Jamarcus can learn from him and then you can trade his fat yetty ass outta there, GO lions

  52. Florio,
Once again, do you even read the articles you post links to. The article has one paragraph (two sentences) on the subject which states:
“In other news, a Raiders employee confirmed the team contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers about suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger but didn’t make an offer. The employee added the Raiders are unwilling to trade today’s No. 8 overall pick for Roethlisberger and that the Steelers aren’t interested in throwing in the No. 18 pick to sweeten the deal.”
Key phrase is “RAIDERS… DIDN’T MAKE AN OFFER.” So where is this “impasse”? Moreover, it seems that all the “employee” said was what everyone knows which is that the Raiders are “unwilling” to trade their 8th pick for a QB that wont start until week 7 this year without other compensation.
Either way no offer was made.

  53. A first round pick swap or second round (maybe just a third) pick is the only compensation that would seem fair.
It’s a high stakes game and the Steelers hold no chips. They will eventually trade him out, but not for a high top ten pick they want. Probably a low first.

  54. Good move by OAkland for trying to put the screws to The Steelers and good move by The Steelers for not giving Ben away for free. I think Oakland needs to give up the 1st and Nnamdi and jump for joy they got Ben for that cheap.

  55. The same people dogging the Raiders for being willing (reportedly) to trade for Ben are now dogging them for not trading. Idiots.
When did Asomugha get thrown into the deal? Because some commenter suggested it?
The Steelers wanted #8 for Ben straight up. The Raiders said throw in #18. Steelers said no. Done, over with.
The #8 and Asomugha for Ben is not even close to a good deal. The Raiders need too many pieces, Ben isn’t going to fix what ails them. Giving up players and a draft pick isn’t the right move. I’m not sure why everyone thinks the Steelers have all the leverage.

  56. who cares about the Ben, and the gorilla on his back of 2 civil lawsuits that he is now going to have to deal with. That is way to much baggage with him right now, and whose to say he won’t do it again.
Right now the raiders should trade their 2nd rd pick, and their late 7th rd pick to the skins for Albert Haynesworth, and Jason Cambell. Draft McClain at #8, and then have any team in the nfl try to run against Seymour, Haynesworth etc…
Just do it Al…get back to the old days of the dominat d.

  57. 1NationRaiderNation,
Your crystal ball might come true. Love the pick and Ben is not worth a first rounder with the baggage he is carrying. The Steelers are in a bad spot with the -6 games and with more of the unknown rape story that is sure to come out. Every NFL team knows this and they are going to use that leverage to get him cheaper. Tomorrow we should hear about the trade, 2nd rounder and 4th rounder for Ben.
Raiders D, is starting to look vicious. We got a stud MLB, Morison stays and moves to SAM. DE rotation looks diesel. We all know the D-Backs are well above average, I think we need some beef at DT.
The Torpedo from Toledo is more than capable of running the run heavy offense. This is McFadden’s breakout season and we all know what Bush can do. TE is one of the best in the league. Our WR’s Chaz and L. Murphy have a year more of experience. Think we need to pick up some more OL in the draft as well.
I see we are playoff bound.Go Raiders…… Suck my @$#&, all you Raider haters………..
