Ravens install a new field

The Baltimore Ravens have announced that they’ve installed a new field at their home stadium.

Hopefully, it’ll properly cushion the fall when a fan runs across the grass and is Tasered by a police officer.  Or tackled by Ray Lewis.  Or Tasered by Ray Lewis.

The product is “Momentum 51” from Shaw Sportexe.  According to the 2009 Record & Fact Book, the playing surface last season was “Sportexe Momentum.”  So they’re upgrading to a new product.

“One of the reasons we selected ‘Momentum 51′ is that it plays well in a variety of competition,” said Roy Sommerhof, Ravens’ vice president of stadium operations.  “It holds up with 300-pound offensive linemen digging in and with fast-moving games like lacrosse and soccer.  Competing in bad weather does not slow the athletes and does not damage the field.”

Look, we know that these venues are trying to make themselves useful on some of the 355 days per year when they aren’t hosting NFL games, but why should the turf be picked based on whether it will mesh well with any game other than football?

Sportexe fields also are used by the 49ers, Jets, Bills, Saints, and Steelers.  Given the late November 2007 debacle at Heinz Field, we don’t think Sportexe should be bragging about that one.

  1. As long as it still has that crest in the center of the field.
That crest is the best emblem on any field in the NFL, you know that.

  2. Built in fan control feature has remote controlled trap doors at various locations on the field. When activated they open up to the underground alligator sanctuary, and can be quickly closed again afterwards.

You can’t answer that one? 1. If the city controls the stadium, chances are that most revenue goes to the football team. If you mesh well with other sports, you most likely get more revenue relatively speaking, depending on the contract you’ve negotiated with the tenant.
    2. If the Team controls the stadium, happy tenants mean more revenue . . . no brainer

  4. When are you going to re-install the “Comment Ratings” you promised us 10 months ago Florio?
Oh yeah, you’re way too busy these days writing about baseball on a football blog.

  5. Florio, you idiot, that debacle from 2007 was on real grass…..that’s why they switched to the field turf and sportexe.

How did you include the Jets but not the Gianta? Oh, right. I forgot they’ve become 2nd fiddle to the Jets haha. Jets suck. Giants suck harder

  7. that field will look real nice when cedric benson burns yall for a couple more 100 yard games!

  8. Looks like a different company had installed the field for that game – not Momentum:
“On Friday, November 23, 2007, Heinz Field hosted four WPIAL championship football games which were followed the day after with a game between Pitt and South Florida. After discussion with the NFL,[45] Steelers ownership made the decision to re-surface the field for their nationally televised game against the Miami Dolphins. A layer of sod was laid overtop the 2.5-acre (10,000 m2) Desso GrassMaster surface.[46] The field’s condition was exacerbated by 1½ inches of rain after the new sod had been laid,[47] which did not allow the tarp to be removed from the field until 70 minutes before the game began.[48]”

  9. The playing surface in the Rapistburger game back in 2007 was grass. You live there you should know that.

  10. The steelers are still using natural grass in heinz field. It hasnt changed.

  11. I’ve actually been on the old field a few times.
My questions is: how well does the new stuff hold up to repeated vacuuming?

  12. The steelers game field is natural grass dummy. They have sportexe at their practice facility. I am a Ravens fan and you are a Steelers fan and I can’t believe you botched that.

  13. Please steeler fans…florio is giving you a clear shot at Ray here…….do not let him down…..

  14. Next –they should install a new city..Biggest piece of shit area in the U.S.

  15. can someone please forward this article to the head of field operations for the chicago bears? thank you.

  16. Only when they remove that ugly purple bird from the 50 will they have a nice field.

    _____________
along with Philly, Cincy, Clevland, 75% of Washington, DC, any city in Michigan, and any Democrat controlled (Public Union controlled) city

Or stabbed by Ray Lewis. Or stabbed by Ray Lewis and is posse.

  19. Ray would kill all the alligators…..They should just clone Ray and keep him in the sanctuary…

  20. I’m pretty sure that the steelers have real grass, unlike this article refrences, the game back in 07 where the ball got stuck was on real grass, you cann tell that just by the fact that it was muddy, so great job.
Also the turf the ravens had was shitty, my high school has the same kind and it dsnt hold up well and needs repaired more than it should

  22. stiller43……really??? Ravens suck??? Really?
Your QB forces women to suck!!

Really? What is the relevance of this ? Is it supposed to be clever? Our fans are not douche bag Philly fans. The only reason you put this in there was to invite idiots to make Ray Lewis murder jokes.
Florio, you get worse everyday and your making your readers dumber. You should be tased. Go write a Brett Favre story, fag.

  24. They also changed it because the shield and endzone markings are permanent in the old turf. The new turf would allow them to change what’s written on the field based on the event being played.
I hope they keep the shield! beware of the shield.

    Not necessary.
Flacco is all the joke we need, but thanks for asking.

  26. Are these turf fields made from petroleum based products? If so, when the players kick up dust, do they inhale that? Did anyone check to see if the dust is cancerous? I guess we’ll find that out in 15 to 20 years when / if retired players have lung cancer. Just a thought.

  27. Nice try Florio. Ravens fans are not nitwits like Browns fans, we dont go streaking across the field and our players are not classless assholes like Steeler players. So, please dont confuse us with them.

  28. 49ers and Steelers play on natural grass. Jets and
Bills play on Field Turf. Not sure about the Saints. All of these fields must be at their indoor practice facilities.
How could you possibly think that game at Heinz field was played on an artificial surface. That brown stuff is called MUD!

  30. @BenWorthlessberger…wow what brass ones you have calling Jo Flacco a joke….What does that make your embarrassment of a QB????
    Too funny!!!!!!!

  31. Fascinating. I am so happy I spent some time this evening learning about the myriad of fake grass brands out there. And the history of sod at Heinz Field. Just riveting.

Because even though the Ravens don’t own the stadium, they make all or 1/2 the $$$ from all extra events played/booked @ the stadium.
