PFTV considers playoff teams most likely not to make it back

For our final PFTV segment of the week, Brocato and I took a look at the 2009 playoff teams least likely to return to the postseason in 2010.

Typically, there’s a 50-percent turnover rate.  But it’s damn near impossible to predict the three teams per conference that won’t make it back.

So we try to pick one or two.  Or maybe one.  (It’s been three days since we taped this; I can’t remember.)

  1. The Vikings, the William’s sisters sit for 4 games, AD fumbles a lot, and if BrINT decides to sit in Mississippi, then Childress is actually forced to coach for a living.

  2. JETS won’t make it back..With all their tough talk, then they will have to rebuild with all those expiring contracts!!!

  3. it looks like the TV behind Florio is not straight. Other than that, everything seems vaguely professional..

  4. The NYJ’s with all kinds of new players will have a tough time playing as a team and won’t make it back to the playoffs.
The Minnesota Vikings will lose the Williams Wall for four games and their top two CB’s are injured to start the season also. GB was a very tough team last year and the Vikings may start the 5th game of the season behind the eight ball.
Arizona is the easy one and so is Cincy.
The other team to miss the playoffs in both the AFC and NFC will simply come down to an unexpected injury to a key player or two. No way to predict that. If a QB goes down on any of the other teams (N.O., Dallas, SD, etc…it doesn’t matter which team…none of them will be able to handle it and that will be the 3rd team from the AFC and NFC)

  5. Really? You think the Eagles will be just fine? They weren’t just fine last year WITH McNabb. Look, Kolb might have a bright future, but this compares with the Packers replacing Favre with Rodgers. That team won 5 or 6 games in his first year before storming back to the elite category. I expect the Eagles to be a 6 win team this season and rebound in 2011, and I’m honestly surprised to hear someone claim otherwise. Even Eagles fans are prepared for this.
If Favre doesn’t return, I don’t think Minnesota makes it. No one discussed that. I don’t see Arizona or New England in this year.

  6. Florio you are such a homer. The Bengals will win the AFC North once again. The Steelers? Are you kidding me?

  7. How about NBC takes the picture of Tiger off of the intro. He is a scumbag of a human being and a terrible role model. Oh and your TV is crooked, like your hair piece.

  8. NFC will be very interesting.
May see a team like Dallas fall out of the picture. Although, unless we do see a team like Dallas fall out of the playoffs (I predict out of Saints Packers Vikings Dalla,s, that Dallas would be the team) it’s also possible that more than 50% return this year.
I think this year, Arizona will indeed miss playoffs, and Eagles I feel will struggle, but not have a terrible season. Maybe a 8-8 or 7-9 type season.
Regardless, NFC will be a great conference this year and should be an exciting playoff stretch too.

  9. Saying the benGALS are the team most likely not to return to the playoffs is the safe bet.

  10. This is always tricky to predict, because it doesn’t always take a big drop-off in order for a team to miss the playoffs the following year. Considering that all you really need to do is finish second in your division, and lose out on tiebreakers to 2 other teams in conference. You can win 10 and miss the playoffs, after all.
I don’t think any of the NFC teams are truly safe. Green Bay and Minnesota should finish 1-2 in some order in the NFCN, but they play a tough enough slate of games that the 2nd place finisher might end up in a tiebreak scenario. The Saints have the superbowl hangover to contend with, and there are some good teams in their division. The NFC East ought to be awfully competitive, and the Giants could potentially displace either the Cowboys or the Eagles. Nobody would be surprised if the Cardinals are 2-3 wins worse than last year, due to hemorrhaging talent in the offseason.
In the AFC, it’s hard to imagine San Diego and Indianapolis not winning their divisions. The Dolphins are probably good enough to potentially displace either the Jets or the Patriots from one of the top 2 spots. The Bengals. The AFC North is hard to call, since Pittsburgh doesn’t promise to be better, but Baltimore and Cincinnati might not as good as last year, so we can’t really guarantee more than one playoff spot from that division.
I think generally, a better thing to try to predict is “which teams that missed the playoffs last year, could make it this year”… where the predictions are easier to make (Dolphins, Giants, Falcons, 49ers, etc.)

  11. Your reasoning for why the Ravens might not make the playoffs is completely ridiculous. Because they made the playoffs for 2 years they can’t make it again? That’s BS. The Ravens have only gained better players. I think they’re a Super Bowl sleeper

  12. Ravens vs Jets in the AFC Title game.
Rex Ryan vs his old team.
Packers vs 49ers in the NFC Title game.
    Aaron Rodgers vs Alex Smith.
By the way, the TV wasn’t crooked. It was just at an angle.

  13. you boys could use some production lessons by looking at wayne and garth’s public access channel

  14. have to disagree with the assessment that the jets wont make the playoffs….team has great defence and running game. good to great receivers, so passing game should pick up….i’m not a jets fan by the way.

  15. How are the Bengals not the pick for the AFCN? They match up favorably with the Ravens even though Baltimore improved in the offseason. That series will probably split 1-1, then we have four easy wins against crappy opponents with the steelers and browns. 5-1 and the Bengals repeat as champs.

  16. how can the bengals be out..they are probably the best team in the AFC north without question marks at any position..Ravens have no cbs steelers have no room to wiggle at wr and the browns……..Either way the bengals shouldnt be out but no question the AFC north crown will be decided between the ravens and bengals..My opinion itll be the bengals but thats only cuz im a bengals fan

  17. My god,
I can’t beleive I have to write this again, but, anyone that thinks the Vikings don’t win their division next year (again) should never be able to post a football related comment. Ever. The idiocy of some of you guys is paramount.
Are your brains made of oatmeal?
It used to be that you could come on this site and engage in some fun and thought provoking football stuff.
It’s become over run by casual observers that should sit on the sidelines, learn the game and read some intelligent posts in regards to the game of football before opening there cake holes.
    Idiots.

  18. The Bengals and Patriots will enter training camp with “no shortage of question marks”, yet Florio sites the only reason the Bengals will not make the playoffs is because they’re the Bengals and they have not made 2 straight playoff appearances since the early 80’s.
WTF does that have to do with the 2010 team? NOTHING!
Where were all the question marks?

  19. Hey retards Ravens never had back to back winning seasons until last year and they barley snuck in to the playoffs last year.

  20. 1 OUT. Cardinals, like you mentioned already.
2 OUT. Eagles play in a very tough division. Not sure why everyone is anointing Kolb as great already.
3 OUT. Then you can point to my beloved Green Bay Packers. They will have a brutal schedule and despite the media love affair with Ted Thompson, this is not an overly talented team. They might have to try and win shoot-outs every week. Defensively, they were WAY over-rated last year.
1 IN. San Francisco is improving. Great draft. Singletary is the man. I think they go 11-5. Very easy schedule.
2 IN. Atlanta has an easy schedule and with them getting healthy, they could be in with 10-6 or 11-5.
3 IN. NY Football Giants. I think everyone forgets that they were cruising along last year, then injuries just decimated them. After those they had in camp, there was no depth. They were pulling DBs off the street. Tough schedule, but 10-6 or better is realistic. I think they could be 12-4 team. Look for their OL to dominate.

  21. Great reasoning: things don’t usually happen twice in row but they happened once already so we will predict they won’t happen again. Some teams have “questions marks,” which we will say several times, but never explain or comment on what we think they are. That’s quality sports analysis there.

  22. How does the 3rd or 4th youngest team in the league in 2009 return 21 starters from a team that went 10-6 have a lot of question marks? I noticed that you mentioned the Bengals had question marks but did not elaborate on what they are. What are the two things that have always lead to winning football in the NFL? Running the ball and stopping the run. The Bengals seemed to be pretty damn good at both of those last year and all the key pieces are back, with a year under thier belt so to think they will digress is just ignorant. How do teams in the 80s and 90s have anything to do with a current roster? The Raiders will great in the 70s does that mean they are going to light the world on fire this season? Your logic is flawed!

  23. The Jets will be a major failure this year…They bought in a bunch of NAMES, all on the downsides of their careers. After 41 years of abject failure, nothing will change. FAIL 42 is on the way.

  24. @employer- do you follow football?? if favre doesn’t come back are you going to play QB?? they don’t have a QB that can win that division with out him, and if AP keeps putting it on the ground, with no chester taylor to spell him, you guys might be 7-9.
Oh not to mention you play the NFC east wich may end up being the toughest in football….

Just a quick question… The two teams that finished ahead of the Steelers in their division both made large strides to improve their teams, the Steelers key offseason aquisition was Arnez Battle a career special teamer. What is expected of you this year?? ha
Notice i did not bring up the offseason turmoil because it has zero relevance to why you wont factor in the playoffs again.

So let me get this straight…. The Bengals and Ravens, the two teams that finished ahead of you last season in your division, both made major improvments in the offseason and your big offseason aquisistion was Arnez Battle, a career special teamer??? Good luck with that.
Notice I said nothing of the turmoil that you faced this offseason, because it has no relevance to why you will be left out of the playoffs again this year. Just sayin.

  29. The funny part about this is that there isn’t a coaching staff in the NFL that sees the Steelers as a non-factor. I guarantee you that Marvin Lewis and John Harbaugh are VERY wary of Pittsburgh. They are both good coaches and professionals, as is Mike Tomlin. Any of the three that are not completely prepared for the other two in that division is 100% guaranteed to finish 3rd.
And don’t sleep on the Browns, either. In fact, don’t sleep on ANYONE in the NFL.

  30. I’m no Ravens fan, but what’s with the weird lack of logic in proclaiming that the Ravens are due for a sub-par season simply because they’ve made the playoffs for the last (gasp) two seasons?! Indy and New England make it nearly every season, and Florio isn’t declaring that they’re due for that same “correction” simply because the Football Gods tire of seeing the same teams have success. Plus, the Ravens actually had a very good off-season. Again, I’m far from a Ravens fan, but sometimes Florio’s comical lack of logic and football acumen begs for a resounding ‘WTF?!’ regardless of which team you happen to root for.

  31. So Bengals are going to have a tough time because even though Pittsburgh has no QB for 4-6 games, they’re still the Steelers?
    Ha, BS

  32. The Steelers only accusition was Battle ? lol are you for real ? Are you smoking crack ?
The Steelers brought in not by the draft . Randle El , Battle , Foote , Mcfadden , Leftwich plus a few others non starter players . Also with a decent draft this year . I think the Steelers might surprise a few people . Everyone thinks that because of the Ben suspension will kill the Steelers .
It will be a distraction . But for a veteran team that didnt make the playoffs last season they will be pissed and want to get back . Bengal fans need to get off their high horse . You swept the division last season for the first time . Congrats . Where did that get you in the playoffs ? You were so scared that the Steelers would make the playoffs that you lost your last game on purpose to make sure the Steelers didnt make it . How did that work out for you ? lol Jets fans remember lol . See how dumb that makes you look ?
Keep thinking you will sweep the Steelers Ravens and Browns this season . And we your normal desperation and owners cheapness you brought in 2 more headcases . Bryant is a one year recieving wonder . He is average to mediocore the rest of the time . Pacman speaks on itsself . Its like saying OJ . Just makes you laugh .
How about this for Bengal fans to think about . Not only wont you sweep this division this year . You wont even have a winning division record this season . Hmmm makes you wonder . See you this upcomming season . Looking forward to it more than playing the Ravens this season .

That FA list is the biggest laugh I’ve had so far this morning! Gimme a break with those retreads… all former Steeler retreads brought back inexplicably.
You will be one of the worst teams in the NFL this year. Watch… and weep fool!

You’re an idiot if 2009 was the first year football was ever played then yes I would agree with you by all means but if you knew anything about football you would know that the Vikings were 10-6 and made the playoffs 1 year BF (before Favre )

  35. And the NFC east the best in football? Are u serious? The Eagles have an un proven starting QB the Giants were a disappointment last year and will be mediocre at best this season and the redskins are….well they’re the redskins ( or the Raiders of the NFC east) and the cowboys well they got killed by the Vikings and they’ll get killed again.

  36. “Randle El , Battle , Foote , Mcfadden , Leftwich plus a few others non starter players”
WOW shaken in our boots man. Mike Tomilin has no idea what he is doing. The cracks are starting to show my friend. Trust a Bengals fan, we know it when we see it, and we see it in the Steelers. There is nothing you can do, the Bengals are coming to embarrass you again. Sleep on us again, please continue to doubt, show no respect because that is what motivates our players, you know the ones no one gave a chance to but us, ones that have something to prove. You guys are just 2 games out of 16, thats all.
Prediction- Mike Tomlin will be on the hot seat by mid season.

  38. Hey moozie you are a dumbass . The Steelers didnt make the playoffs last season .

  39. Shocking that a Steeler fan wouldn’t pick the Bengals to make it back to the playoffs. The Bengals will be a even better team this season — mark it down. The offseason moves haven’t been flashy, but there have been upgrades with zero losses. Good offseason for Who Dey. Not great, but good. And since they were good last year, look for them to be even better in 2010.

  40. “How about this for Bengal fans to think about . Not only wont you sweep this division this year . You wont even have a winning division record this season . Hmmm makes you wonder . See you this upcomming season . Looking forward to it more than playing the Ravens this season . ”
    Let me try:
Not only will your QB miss 4-6 games, he’ll rape another college co-ed. And you’ll miss the playoffs again.

  41. @ employer
that ranks up there in the top 5 or 10 of the most ridiculous posts I have ever read on PFT. And that’s saying something dude.

  42. Bengals are going into camp with no shortage of question marks? You’d think that if you want to be a play journalist, you’d at least do some research. Where are these numerous question marks with Cincy? Is it the D that returns all 11 starters and that has added solid depth all around? I’ll give you the fact that the O does have to answer some questions, but they have significantly improved that side of the ball on paper this off season.
A real journalist might have pointed to their having the 4th toughest schedule in the NFL, but that would have actually taken some thought and some research. Florio and his little buddy both hate the Bengals and they let their personal bias come into play in everything they report.
All in all, I’m glad no one is giving the Bengals the respect they deserve after running through the AFCN (arguably, the NFL’s toughest division) because it can just add fuel to the fire of a repeat! WHO DEY!

  43. Just remember Zack . Along with allegedly raping 2 chicks . Zero arrests or convictions . But he has been guily a few times of raping your teams defense .

We’ll look past your apparent lack of football knowledge and help you out: When have the Steelers needed a high priced free agent to win/have a great season? That would be, um, never. That’s why they’re one of the best teams each year, they know how to draft and upgrade internally with people in their own system. Unlike other teams in the AFC North that sign high priced FA’s that never pan out, we don’t need that mess. And the Bungles won’t win the division again, you can bet on that. Carson isn’t the type of QB that can take over a game, let alone put the team on his back to get them in and through the playoffs.

  45. What are the question marks for the Bengals?
The only Starter we lost from last year is Jeremi Johnson and he isn’t ruled out yet. Last year the O line was the big question mark, and they performed well. This year they should be that much better. The D is solid all around. Special teams was solid last year, and should be better with both of our rookie returners coming into their second years, and Shippley now in the mix. Tight end and wide reciever are the only question marks, and I don’t see how they could have gotten worse than last year. Chad and Caldwell are still there, Bryant is at least as good as Coles and probably much better. Shippley has potential and Cosby started coming on at the end of last year. Greshem will be raw, but better than anything we had last season, and we can finally see if Coffman is any good. Plus if we can resign Kelly which looks like we will, that is a solid group. Palmer wasn’t great last year but I think he will improve with better targets and a better line this year. That being said, nobody knows what is going to happen within the division. These teams always play each other tough. One big injury to any key player and it changes everything.

  46. “Just remember Zack . Along with allegedly raping 2 chicks . Zero arrests or convictions . But he has been guily a few times of raping your teams defense .”
Ha, and you think he’s innocent? Really?
At least I can admit that some of the guys on my team arent good guys, but the arrests mostly come from players #30-52 on the roster, not the face of my franchise.
Yes our defense was bad in previous years, congrats for picking on a crappy team.

  47. Florio, your ridiculous the bengals have everyone back from a sweep of the division and have added alot of depth.
The schedule is difficult but all athe warm weather teams and the saints have to play in cold weather at PBS.
I suggest you give me a call before you do these lame videos, I can help you out…at aleast you wont look so foolish.

  48. I understand it’s hard to make the playoffs two years in a row and the Bengals don’t have a good history on that front, but don’t underestimate how much went wrong for the Bengals last year while they were winning the division. They should be better this season.
I mean they had a player die for crying out loud. They also had DC Mike Zimmer’s wife die (they followed the week of her funeral with by far their worst defensive performance of the season – conceding more than 100 yards more in regular time than their second worst defensive performance), got very little contribution from their 1st round pick, lost their top 2 TEs before the season even started, lost the guy who was leading the league in sacks for the season in week 6, started the season with 3 new starters on O-line plus a position switch, and lost their first game of the season on one of the flukiest plays ever seen in league history.
I’m going to place a safe bet on a LOT less craziness happening this season (even though I understand this is the Bengals we’re talking)

  49. question marks… like how did the steelers manage to lose to the browns? and raiders??? and chiefs?????? last year?
    those kind of “question marks”?

  50. good to see the Bengals/Steelers rivalry re-ignited. afc north is up for grabs, should be a fun 2010
