Byron Westbrook says his brother is ready to go

Washington Redskins cornerback Byron Westbrook doesn’t know if his brother, running back Brian Westbrook, will sign with the Redskins after visiting on Wednesday. But he says he does know that his brother is ready to play after a 2009 season in which he suffered two concussions.

He did get cleared medically when he visited the Rams,” Byron Westbrook told the Washington Post. “They did a physical, a checkup on him, and the Rams did deem that he was good to play. Remember, at the end of the season, after the second one [concussion], he did get a change of helmets.

“It was more of a concussion helmet, which helped him take hits in the head. The question is going to be in the back of his mind, but you’re going to take those hits if you’re going to play this game.”

The Redskins have a crowded backfield with Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker already on the roster, but Byron thinks his brother would fit in seamlessly.

“We do have three great backs on the team right now,” he said. “With my brother, it would be adding another dimension from a pass-catching standpoint and a great third-down running back. And also a great first- and second-down running back as well.”

  1. John Riggins will only be used in short yardage situations to conserve his energy.

  2. as his brother I know you need to stand behind him and support him. i just hope you told him this is a bad idea.

  3. It’d be a shame if Brian were to take little brother Byron’s 2010 roster spot. The real Westy should have a spot in Philly though!

  4. I hope that Westbrook gets signed, just not with the Redskins!!!
Never wanted McNabb to wear their colors and now this…UGH noooo!!!
I dont want to have to play against McNabb and Westbrook twice a year-Its not fun cheering against former favorites….

  5. The Westbrook parents must not be the sharpest tools in the shed. Brian and Byron Westbrook? Who the hell names their kids like that? Do they have another brother named Ryan by any chance?

  6. Sir, can you touch your finger to your nose? There’s no alcohol on your breath THIS TIME, but those comments could only come from someone that has had a few.
    Book em Dano!

  7. We’ve got earth wind and fire. Now I can’t tell if we are adding water or heart with Westbrook. Either way after him all we need is one more washed up back to summon captain planet!

  8. As an Eagles fan, I like the approach the Redskins are taking with regards to the RB position. I take a similar approach for my NFAA College Football 2010 Dynasty. Even if I’m stacked at DT, I still draft DT’s. That way I just get rid of the worst ones. I think they keep Larry Johnson and Willie Parker, possible Westbrook if they go that route. I would of gotten rid of Portis by now.

  9. He is a class act – hope that he catches on somewhere. Always outperformed his contract and never got a big payday. The life of a RB in the NFL

  10. I can’t help but be reminded of Billy Bob from Not Another Teen Movie/Varsity Blues.

  11. Agreed. Willie Parker is a horrible football player. That being said, it appears that Brian Westbrook is at best functionally retarted. Time to retire.

Could it be the product of a Christening accident. Perhaps they really liked the name Byron but their priest thought they said Brian and they were too shy or too slow to correct him.
Then the next time they just wrote it down for him.
As for him signing for the ‘Skins. He was a great player but he has always been injury prone and the two concussions last year were a major warning. Westbrook should retire for the sake of his long term health.
Playing wise he would be a great addition to the Redskins. However, I hope everyone involved advises him to retire. Even if he avoids further concussions, I doubt he can surive a full season with a significant number of carries. He should retire, preserve his body and retire as an Eagle.
There is nothing worse than seeing a really good player going into decline, except seeing them do it in the jersey of another franchise.

  13. Next up the Redskins will be talking to Tommy McDonald, Ron Jaworski, and Harold Carmichael, for COMPETITION…..Geritol competition….
Hey Shanahan, ever heard of YOUTH?!

Actually, aside from McNabb he was the only Eagle I recall who did get a big payday. $3MM bonus in 2005 and made $5.85MM last season. For an aging RB, that is solid. For the Eagles, it is unheard of.
I want him to retire, he’s been such a great guy and that concussion isn’t getting any better. Westbrook would be far more recognized for his accomplishments as the best all-purpose RB post-Faulk if it wasn’t for the attention whores he played with (McNabb and Owens).
