Jackson: Mornhinweg questioned my toughness after concussion

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson says that after he suffered a concussion during the 2009 season, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg questioned his toughness and pressured him to return to the field.

“I can remember we went up to New York [Week 14] – that was a huge game for us,” Jackson told Sporting News. “The week before, [the Giants had] beaten Dallas and I didn’t play [at Atlanta] because I had a concussion. It was iffy if I’d come back and play. Our offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg, said some things, trying to question my toughness. I was like, ‘Coach, I just got a concussion. This [is] my brain. If it’s anything else, my shoulder, whatever, I’m going to play.'”

Jackson’s comments came from a Sporting News interview that we’ve mentioned a couple of times because it led to a back-and-forth between Jackson and Donovan McNabb, and because Jackson demonstrated supreme confidence in his and the Eagles’ abilities.

But I hadn’t noticed the comments about Mornhinweg until I saw them at the Off the Record blog, and the comments about Mornhinweg are a bigger deal than the comments about McNabb.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made clear last season that he expects every NFL team to take concussions seriously, and that decisions about when players can return to the field after concussions are to be made by doctors. If the attitude in Philadelphia is that those decisions are to be made by assistant coaches, then Goodell may need to get in touch with the Eagles’ coaching staff and remind them of the league’s concussion policies.

  1. Wow, DeSean Jackson is certainly full of himself right now, isn’t he? I hate WRs that feel the need to talk. Shut your mouth and catch the ball, no one cares about your loud mouth. Why don’t you grow a pair of balls you prim a dona.

  2. It’s a position thing. For a quarterback, a concussion is a serious issue. For a wide receiver…..well,…. better that than a sprained thumb or tender hamstring.

  3. Little TO just doesn’t know when to shut up.
Another Freddie Mitchell, not an NFC East fan but looking forward to his 175 lb frame being featured on jacked up !
No disrespect Eagle fans but I haven’t seen somebody who has done nothing run his mouth and show up teammates and coaches like he does!

  4. Remember when Morhinweg was the head coach of the Lions and in the middle of a Lions practice he drove off on his motorcycle to show how mad he was? I guess he really showed them.

  5. marty is absolute shit when it comes to calling plays, we need a new one, seriously, hes awful. the fact that hes pressuring a young breakout player to come back possibly early from a concussion just shows how much of a dumbass he is. please reid, just tell him nothing personal and FIRE HIS ASS!

  6. Jackson needs to start a rap group with Dez Bryant. They could be known as “2Lil ‘n 2Late”.

  7. If it is true, are you people really blaming the player? Heck, the best way not to have dirty laundry aired in public is to not have dirty laundry.

  8. I think Marty Mornhinweg just wants the rest of the world to be brain-damaged so he can feel like he fits in.

  9. Most of the comments on this nugget gripe about DeSean Jackson’s mouth rather than the fact that his coach apparently ignored a serious central nervous system injury and pressured his receiver onto the field before he was ready.
    Typical.

  10. Andy Reid is fixing up his resume because he is going to get canned after creating a mess of the Eagles.

Fat Offensive Coordinator will work for Food……..

  11. It’s amazing to me that the response to that article is to blame Jackson. With all that we now know about the effects of concussions in the history of the NFL, coaches cannot pressure players to play with head injuries, period.
Some sports fans are just idiots, plain and simple.

  12. do any of you know what kind of jackarse mornhinweg is… remember the coin toss, lion fans never will…
lets see how his offense runs without mcnabb and westbrook….

  13. He’s calling out his coaches? Really? He just talked about a conversation. He didn’t speak poorly of Marty. He was challenged and he gave a very truthful answer and probably one he should have given.
The Eagles do not take concussions lightly regardless. If you paid any attention to the Westbrook situation, you’d know.
Just because Marty was challenging him, something a coach should do, does not mean the Eagles are against NFL policies.

Really, Freddy Mitchell? Guess you don’t watch too much football. I suppose that Pro Bowl he made didn’t mean anything, right?
Pats fan… typical genius. Ask Darth Hoodie if he can show you some highlights of DJax, I know it’s hard to follow the NFL when you are Pats fan. If you can’t cheat anymore, guess your team can’t win, right?

  15. how is another Freddie Mitchell? last i knew, Mitchell ran his mouth and didnt produce on the field. Jackson is running his mouth, but he actually does have skills.

  16. @ampats…….done nothing??? hes done a little something not much but def more than nothing and its pretty dumb to mention him in a sentance with fred ex considering he doesnt wear a bow tie

  17. “I think Marty Mornhinweg just wants the rest of the world to be brain-damaged so he can feel like he fits in.”
Let’s not forget that it was “head coach” Mornhinweg who won the toss in OT and gave the ball to the other team, who promptly went on to score and win the game.

  18. Mornhinweg… same coach who once opted to “take the wind” after winning a coin toss in overtime… then promptly lost on a 40 yard field goal.
This guy sucks as a coordinator, and apparently as a person too. I think DeSean has every right to complain about that, although it’d be better for him professionally to speak to someone within the organization about it. But it’s far more fun for the media (and Florio) this way.

  19. So Jackson pukes on McNabb, now on his coaches.
“I was like, ‘Coach, I just got a concussion. This [is] my brain. ”
Apparently it’s not MUCH of a brain.

  20. “I think Marty Mornhinweg just wants the rest of the world to be brain-damaged so he can feel like he fits in.”
    Love this comment.

  21. Playing with a concussion is almost as dumb as electing to kickoff in sudden death overtime.

  22. I had big hopes and dreams that Laron Landry would bury DeSean Jacko.
DeSean is flourishing, while Laron is flirting with the BUST tag

  23. “Remember when Morhinweg was the head coach of the Lions and in the middle of a Lions practice he drove off on his motorcycle to show how mad he was? I guess he really showed them.”
That wasn’t the bad part, the bad part is that he came back. He and Millen should’ve taken a ride to the nearest bath house and…stayed there.

  24. I guess this proves how brain damaged Jackson was. Sure, call out your ex-QB, and then call out your current coordinator? Obviously Jackson is a whiner and complainer…not good for Kolb to find in the huddle.

  25. There’s seems to be a lot of DJax haters up here…well…keep on hatin’. It only makes him better! And whilst you hate, he’ll be just puttin’ more TD notches on his resume while you cry and continue to hate as he smokes your secondary.
    Go ahead DJax!

  26. Eagles fan would bash McNabb is he came out and said anything against his OC or said anything at all as they always found fault with him. But when it’s Jackson talking (when he should shut up and grow up)…..whoaaa, that’s ok with the Eagles fans.

  27. I loved DeSean, but I’m getting tired of him lately. While MM was obviously wrong for trying to pressure him, Jackson needs to keep all these things in house.

  28. A coach can’t force a player onto the field, and a player can’t force himself onto the field, unless cleared by the medical staff.
If this was an issue, obviously the medical staff signed off on him already, hence it really was a matter of him not being willing to jump out on the field. Not saying I blame the guy – I sat out for 2 weeks after my first concussion back in highschool – but still. If your job is to be a receiver in the NFL, it’s hard to do your job if you don’t show up for work.

  29. agree with you, burntorangehorn.
and wth- dabarber ‘Typical Philly thug attitude’– does that even mean given the context of what was said? It doesn’t make sense, whatsoever.

  30. Maybe if he gain some weight, he could take a shot. London Fletcher gave him a tap on the chest and Jackson missed two games afterwards…

  31. Seriously?
You just now dug this out of a 2 week old article and are presenting it as breaking news?
C’mon Florio. It’s clear you have now begun a campaign against this guy. Can’t wait to hear whats next…
    Mornigwheg is a boob though….

  32. Damn, maybe throwing your coach under the bus is a bit much, but asking your player to play with a concussion is ridiculous. Youall for get that this is the reason why they are short a running back right now. Yall sound like some assholes. If you’ve never played football and/or had a concussion, please shut up about this. It took me three years to come back from a concussion type injury.
Desean Jackson is not a prim a dona, this cat is the truth and he is doing waaaayy better than anyone gave him credit for when he came out of Cal. He shut his mouth about his contract situation but shutting up about an injury is the reason why he wont ever get another contract if you leave it up to yall dumb ass.

  33. I still think Donovan was taking a shot at little dejack when he said, that it won’t make him a bigger man, he literally meant it. I must say I use to like the little gnome, but hes just getting to “BIG” for his britches.

  34. Criticize QB, OC, ……………..somehow after 2 years in the league Desean jackson is the centerpiece of a team that the QB and the RB that lots, of your past sucess was based on are gone, but it’s made out like he is the man who is responsible for a decade of sucess………. I hope the eagle suck…………

  35. So does someone as terrified as Jackson is to catch a ball over the middle get a concussion in the first place. Did he fall down in the shower?

  36. DJACK is Pencil Neck geek who’s got about two more years before he’s out of the league. I agree Marty sucks but I think #10 is writing checks his little frame may not be able to cash. Note to concussion whiners. It’s simple if you can’t take a hit, step off the field and let your replacement come in and do it. If not STFU and collect your millions just don’t waste it so you end up in shelter when your 35.
There will always be another 4.3 speedster with hands who can take your place so enough with all the safety stuff. I know it’s terrible to most of the nerds that follow this site that they actuall hit in football and sometimes the helmets collide but with the rise of concussion issues is slowly going to change football into a two hand touch flag sport over the next 20 years.

  37. Stone, you need to shut the hell up. He isn’t running his mouth at all dumbass. I want to see you play with a concussion. Besides, he’s better than 90% of the Receivers in the NFL. If you are one of the best, you can talk. Stone you need to STFU

  38. Stone, you need to shut the hell up. He isn’t running his mouth at all dumbass.

  39. nothing wrong with not playing with a concussion, look at Ted Johnson now no one wants to live like that, I love playing football but I woudnt play with a concussion too many of them and your gonna suffer some serious side effects

Yep…. Welcome to Cleveland Mr. Reid! Writing is on the wall… No new contract, moved McNabb against his wishes, giving the power to Howie Hupter, and all he does is gets that team to the SB and Playoffs. Philly fans deserve better than that (Cheesesteak sammiches with seaman instead of provolone sounds perfect for you sheep fu(kers. I hope most of you get genital warts)!
As for a Cleveland destination… Reid joins great friend and mentor Mike Holmgren, right hand man Tom Heckert, and replaces Mangini who is NOT Holmgren’s guy!

  43. Personally, I can’t wait to see DeSean become the next TO in Philly! Kobb couldn’t wait to be a starter, and now I can’t wait to see what the fans and DeSean have to say about him when the Eagles start loosing.

  44. DJax? Whilst? Hatin’? A mixture of Old English & Ebonics. A typical, confused Eagles fan.
Jackson had maybe 5 good games in his career. Almost 1/4 of his 2009 stats came against the Giants secondary & that is certainly not saying much. I think Freddie Mitchell had a couple good games in his career as well, but at least he was semi-clutch. What did “DJax” do down the homestretch last season when the Eagles once again crapped the bed in the Playoffs? As a matter of fact, he did absolutely nothing in the final three weeks if the season. He totaled 10 receptions for 93 yards in 3 games, hardly superstar numbers. Jackson is a one-dimensional player & teams adjusted to him. When a player relies on one asset, it is hard for him to return to form once teams adjust. I guarantee you that he will be lucky to put up 50/750/5 this year. He benefitted from McNabb’s cannon arm & the Giants horrendous secondary. Both are gone in 2010, as will Jackson’s stardom.

  45. Airjunior23 says: “It took me three years to come back from a concussion type injury. ”
Evidently not all the way back, judging by that largely unintelligible gibberish you just posted.

  46. DATSKINSDUDE, first of all Desean only missed 1 game and when he came back he had over 200 all-purpose yards and 2 TD’s over 50+ yards. One on a punt return and on on a deep pass. And it wasnt like Fletcher barely tapped Desean. McNabb led Desean right into Fletchers path and Fletcher laid him out. Its all good though, because he came back and lit it up and also showed that he DOES have the sack to go over the middle, despite what many haters may say.

  47. Eagles have dismissed DeSean’s complaints, saying “He hasn’t been himself lately, and is often confused.”.

  48. I love reading comments from guys that clearly haven’t watched enough film to have any clue what they are talking about……
    Djax:
    runs slants over the middle
put up stats without McNabb (yes, only 2 games)
    is liked by his teammates
catches everything that doesn’t bounce in front of him (McNabb’s signature throw)
has produced in the NFL, even made a Pro Bowl in case you missed that
is one of the most elusive players in the league
If that isn’t enough to say he has proven himself, than I don’t know what is.
The “Young Guns” may succeed, and they may flop, but all those guys as a team, have the talent to play with any team in the league. You may not like his attitude, but Djax is a weapon that most teams would kill for. Don’t be surprised if these team of “unproven” players, proves everyone wrong.

Yeah, this coming from a guy who probably never played football in his life and never had a concussion. Shit is serious. You should try having one, once you do, you’ll probably learn hwo to shut ur own damn mouth.

“Everywhere you go, you always take the weather with you…everywhere you go, you always take the weather.”

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Since when did Philly fans because such bleeding vag!nas? We’re going to have to hire an excavation crew with deep mine experience to make sure we get all the sand out of your vag!na.

  52. BROWNSFN, why are you even F’n commenting? Cribbs bitches waaaay more than Desean. Its just that Desean produces waaaaaay more than your boy Cribbs so people dont really care as much about what he has to say so they dont start as much drama with him as they do with Desean.

  53. i’m an eagles fan and i’ve hated mornhinweg since they brought him in to replace childress. he’s a tool. one tool replacing another. good for desean.

  54. “There will always be another 4.3 speedster with hands who can take your place”
    Namely???

  55. Look at me!

it’s all about Me me me!
    I love me some me!
I expect we’ll see this kid doing situps in his driveway real soon.
Shame to. He’s a vastly talented player.
If you think that why is it necessary to trumpet it to the press? keep it in house.

  56. Turned himself into T.O.’s Mini-Me, didn’t he?
    That didn’t take long…
Couldn’t happen to a better team or a nicer bunch of fans.

  57. Even as a Cowboys fan I can say that I don’t blame DeSean one bit. Like he said, this is his brain in question. Players who suffer concussions should never be pressured back into action before medically cleared.

  58. Morhinweg …. what a douche. Couldn’t wait to see him get canned in Detroit. Dufus took the “wind” vs. the ball in overtime. Makes me wonder who has the possible concussive brain damage.

  59. The guy does’nt know when to keep his mouth shut…end of story. Did the owner tell him he has to play? Or the HC? NO. He was challenged and stood his ground, big deal. When you got guys who may just want to take a week off, why not challenge a guy who says he is suffering from a concussion?
How long does it take to recover from a concussion? Is there a set time. It is an inexact science and differs with every case. So you just gonna say: ok son whenever you’re ready to go holla?
Why would you, if you got good judgment, say that about your coach in such a public setting? You either level the accusation straight up to the people who need to address it, or keep your trap shut. That dude is ttrouble. That’s right, with a double T.

  60. Amen Mike. Moronweg should not only be publicly criticized, he should be publicly executed.

  61. “We’ll take the wind” – Marty Mornhinweg, former head coach of the Detroit Lions.
    ’nuff said.

  62. Douchebag just can’t keep his mouth shut, can he? I can’t wait until somebody pops his scrawny ass. He’s good, but not so good that he has a right to run his big mouth on everyone. Hope he tears apart that locker room, and FAST

  63. COME ON PEOPLE! A Philly player with a brain? Now I’ve heard everything.

  64. Unlike running an NFL offense or team, one thing Morhinwheg should be quite familiar with is a brain defect. He gives a bad name to all individuals who do suffer from retardation and other mental deficiencies. Let the Eagle implosion begin!!

  65. Oh guys will you stop. Seriously. The media has brainwashed you all about Eagle fans. We loved McNabb and respected him greatly. But you have to admit the media is really over-rating him now that he is gone. Kolb is going to open many eyes this season. Also McNabb has always been sensitive. McNabb just shut your mouth, you didnt have to respond did you?
Jackson was asked if he thought the eagles would take a step back without mcnabb. What did you want him to say? Quit being so soft and sensitive McNabb. you were unaccurate, bad mechanics, and held onto the ball to long. Ill say it right here and now. The Eagles are indeed better off without you. Nobody will believe it but you’ll soon see it!!!

  66. I’m sorry, i know that a concussion is a serious thing, but i thought he was being a punk when he sat out. he’s a WR, he can avoid getting hit for the most part. he’s not a RB running thru the line ore a lineman or line backer, he is a wr. he gets the ball 6 times per game, he and the team could have gotten together and adjusted his routes so he doesn’t get harmed. And as for this interview, its making me like him less and less.

  67. There’s a point in which you just need to shut up and spout the company line. Desean Jackson left that point about six exits ago.

  68. Only an Eagles fan would be so completely stupid as to blame the player in this case. If true, Marty Morningwood needs to be banned from the NFL permanently. Can’t ban Eagles fans unless they move the team out of that hell hole. I hear someone’s building a stadium in L.A. That would be cause for celebration. No more Philly fans in the NFL.

  69. Desean Jackson is fast becoming the lastest diva among wild receivers in the NFL.He just can’t shut up, we’ll see what happens this year when Jeremy Maclin becomes the #1 receiver .

  70. how bout jacksons numbers speak for themselves. he’s explosive and if you get him injured badly then you don’t really have jack sh!t. marty get a life!

  71. lol at people saying hes a WR he can still play with a concussion, NO HE SHOULDNT!!!! with a concussion you shouldnt even run, the slightest movement can make your concussion worse or cause serious brain damage.

  72. This item is seriously devoid of the key details. I realize that’s not really PFT’s fault here, but it would be helpful to know what these “some things” Morhinweg said were.
“You gonna be able to play this week, Agnes?” isn’t necessarily the same thing as “Even though I’m certain you have a concussion, you should try to risk further injury by playing this week.”
I’m not a Mornhinweg guy or anything, but DJax seems quite capable of hyperbole.

I love how everyone wants to rag on Eagles fans as not being happy unless they have something to complain about, and then constantly try to gin up scandals when none exist. All of the “analysts” and “reporters” loved to go on and on about the McNabb-Kolb Qb controversy. Now that it has played out, some are trying to create a currently non-existant Kolb-Vick Qb controversy. It seems to me that it’s more likely that others aren’t happy unless they can say all Eagles fans love to do is complain. Desean did nothing wrong. There are a bunch of people saying the Eagles are going to suddenly start losing all of their games because they decided to go with Kolb instead of McNabb (analysts always favor the veteran over the new guy in these discussions it seems), and Jackson was sticking up for his team and his new QB. While I was, and still am, a McNabb fan, I don’t think the team will just fall apart without him. Some reporters then took Jackson’s statement and ran off to repeat just a little piece of it to McNabb to try and get an angry response out of him. No scandal, just typical “reporting” (sports or otherwise) these days. As for the concussion comment, I normally prefer that such issues be handled in house, but if there’s a coordinator trying to pressure players with concussions to go back out onto the field too soon, then I think they should be publicly admonished. They’re taking serious chances with other people’s lives.

  75. Sounds like plenty of guys who have never played college or even high school football somehow believe that they could just play through a concussion. What a bunch of fools.

  76. Just a thought from a girl who has had 7 concussions. Marty, they’re real and their impact is life long. While I really can’t stand DeSean, he is right on this.
With this being said. Given the overtime coin toss decision made by Marty which defined his head coaching career. The importance of the brain isn’t an imperative for Marty.

  77. Who knew that Jackson was even susceptible to head injuries like concussions? How in the world would you even know that he had a brain injury with all of the stupid things he does and says? Why is it that the ones that do the most talking but do the very least on the field are these DA wideout’s?
