Report: Pierre Thomas and the Saints are far apart

The New Orleans Saints want to get restricted free agent running back Pierre Thomas locked up before training camp. And Thomas, who hasn’t signed his one-year tender offer, wants to do a long-term deal. But that doesn’t mean the sides are close enough to be confident a deal will get done.

Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com reports that Thomas wants money in the Steven Jackson range, and that might be higher than the Saints are willing to go.

Jackson has a five-year, $48.5 million contract with the Rams, but Jackson was the unquestioned focal point of the Rams’ offense and had already had three 1,000-yard seasons when he signed that deal. Thomas is a good player, but he’s not even a regular starter, and his career high is 793 rushing yards.

It’s hard to see how Thomas could expect to get the kind of money Jackson got — especially considering how much money the Saints already have tied up in their other running back, Reggie Bush.

And so, if Thomas is really holding out for as much money as Jackson, he’s probably going to be holding out for quite a while.

  1. Stephen Jackson is regarded as maybe the best back in the league…come on…it’s STL…everybody knows they’re running, most of the time….7-8 in the box, every down, and he still is amongst the leagues best, year after year….Sorry Pierre, you are a beast, but you’re not there yet.

  2. he is crap just like bush….
neither can stay healthy enough to be worth anything….

  3. Brandon Jacobs money sounds more like it – 4yrs/$25M, with about half in up front money.

  4. Ha he must be smoking that Kush.. a fair deal in the Fred Jackson, Derrick Ward range .. Stephen Jackson methinks not

  5. Looks like Saints RB’s will be getting a promotion. Thats how PT got his job, DM was a gonner and PT gets promoted. Of course there is Reggie who will still be 3rd in the line up, lmao

  6. They’re far apart. The Saints are in Louisiana and Thomas is in Illinois.

  7. As a Saints fan I must say that Pierre Thomas is on crack. With Reggie, Lynell, and PJ in the backfield, the Saints could afford to let Pierre go. He’s a great running back, no doubt, but not worthy of 10 million dollars a year. What has he been smoking?

  8. Thomas is high. Really, he’s not even in the same class as Jackson. When he carries 300+ times and gains 1400+ yards then he should talk about Jackson money.

  9. Pay the man… He is only going to get better and produce more… Very elusive in space, powerful in crowds and has great receiving skills.

  10. It’s called negotiating. He knows he’s not worth that much. He’ll end up around $3-4 million/year which is about what he’s worth. Any Saints’ fan who says trade/cut him because of the other rb’s on the roster are the real crack smokers. He is a valuable and above-average dual-threat running back provided he can stay healthy. An incentive-laden contract with a sweet signing bonus would be the best way to go. The deal will get done, just hope it doesn’t drag on into training camp.

  11. wow pierre…might wanna take a step back and realistically take stock of your value

  12. Could this become a distraction that drags the Saints down like to it seems to happen frequently to SB winners?

  13. Just consider that Len Pastabelly is the “source” saying Pierre is asking for Steven Jackson money. Don’t buy it!

  14. This will resolve itself, but it only makes sense to ask for the ceiling before accepting reality.
PT is a very good back, but not at the elite level yet.
5 years / $27 Million / 14.5 Million Guaranteed in first 3 years sounds doable.

  15. zombierevolution do you really think that a contract dispute is going to bring down an entire team? COME ON MAN!
bspurloc are you talking? It’s hard to tell with all of the sh!t coming out of your mouth.

  16. Steven Jackson money? Seriously? Steven carries the whole load for a crap team and does a fantastic job of it.
Pierre is part of a committee on a great team and couldn’t stay healthy last year.
Either Pastabelly’s making $hit up, or Pierre and his agent are executing a piss poor plan to get him more money.
Steven Jackson money for Pierre Thomas (shaking head in disbelief)…unbelievable.

Me thinks atwater is codename for Pierre Thomas…

  18. Remember last year at this time Owen Danials turned down a deal that would have made him the second or third highest paid TE in the NFL. He turned it down and want “Winslow money” and what happened next. He was having a great year – got big time hurt – owners op-out of CPA – no longer was he an UFA and has to sign a small tender offer.
I bet he wishes he took the offer, I know his agent does!

  19. No way this guy gets SJax money….. I will bet my left nut on it.

  20. I love how everyone thinks they are a GM, tossing up numbers.
Pierre is a top 10 RB if he gets the ball and stays healthy. He averaged 5.4 ypc, and finishing 24th in the league in rushing yards having under 150 attempts is impressive.
To be and honest, non-Saints fan, I’ll fill you in. The guy should get more money than Reggie Bush. That is also coming from a USC guy.
SJax money, no, but he is far and away the Saints best RB, and without him, their unbalanced offense gets even more one sided.

  21. P.Thomas is clearly the best RB on the Saints. What do they have after him? Bush? Are you kidding? L.Hamilton? maybe? Sign the guy for 25-30 million. Then cut Bush because he is the most over paid player in the league now that JR got cut.

  22. @Franchise-
I AM a Saints fan, and I agree with you. It’s that damn rookie (1st round pick no less) $ avalanche that’s been screwed for too long.
If these guys were paid on productivity AFTER gaining the PRIVILEGE to being signed to a team, shit yes Pierre would be getting the lions share.
But as it stands in the NOW (reality), scoring S. Jackson cash is a tad ridiculous… in St. Louis, Jackson is ALONE for the most part…
In NO, Pierre has shared snaps with Bush, Hamilton, Bell, and even Aaron Stecker and to some extent, a healthy Heath Evans.
Last year he was part of a 3-headed hydra (5 counting #30/#44), and missed a few games…
    That alone says it ALL.
Chill out PT. Your day will come young man. You’re part of a SB winning team. You have a ring to show for your contributions.
Ask Steve J what he’d rather have, a fat check, or a SB ring???
    Get what I’m saying?
Play excellent ball now, get ultra-paid later… it’ll happen.

Well it’s obvious you are not a Saints fan or follow the team much. First people are giving their opinions about salary based on actual deals real GM’s have given out, your are the hubris arrogant one beginning your statement , “I love the way…”.
Those statements about an acceptable deal were probably pretty close to accurate as to similar contracts given out to similar talent and one HELL of a lot closer to being accurate and insightful than your stupid statement about our lopsided offense.
Some facts…In ’09 NFL League standings the Saints were ranked:
7th in total number of rushing plays
15th in total number of passing plays
    3rd in rushing touchdowns
    1st in passing touchdowns…
I could go on but I have made my point…you don’t have one.

I don’t know about the feces part but he makes a good point about them staying healthy. Exactly why the ‘running back by committee’ has been successful for us. But it is based on 3, 4 or 5 good running backs you all pay ‘good’ money to instead of paying one guy Reggie money…we kind of are doing both and are not going to make that mistake again. We must have felt we were stuck with Reggie but we are not stuck with Thomas and we cannot afford two Reggie’s and 3 or 4 other good backs. Anyhow Pierre is my man, he does have some durability problems and that’s ok in our scheme…NOT TWO GUYS MAKING TOO MUCH $$$$$
