Super Bowl XLVIII will be played in East Rutherford, New Jersey -- not New York City. Some New Jersey politicians think the NFL needs to make that clear.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie blasted people who have referred to the 2014 game as the “New York Super Bowl.”
“Those comments would come from the geographically challenged,’' Christie said. “I’m looking out that door, and it’s New Jersey, and I look where that stadium is, and it’s New Jersey, and when everybody gets on the train or in their cars or on buses, they’re going to be coming to that game in New Jersey.’'
U.S Senator Frank Lautenberg also wants New Jersey to get credit as the host of Super Bowl XLVIII, writing a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and asking him “to ensure that the NFL appropriately describes the site of the game as ‘New Jersey/New York’ and not simply ‘New York.’''
Obviously, the New Jersey officials are correct that the game is going to be played in their state. And obviously, people will continue to refer to the game as the “New York Super Bowl,” for the same reason that the NFL doesn’t have two teams called the New Jersey Jets and New Jersey Giants.
