Shanahan says Redskins want Westbrook

Free agent running back Brian Westbrook is expected to make a decision soon about where he’ll play in 2010. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan hopes it’s in Washington.

We want him to sign with us,” Shanahan said. “Like I said, it could be some great competition. I really like Brian, what he’s done and how he’s handled himself. I’m sure he’s weighing some options. It’s not too far away from home. Any more I can do?”

The competition Shanahan refers to would come from the running backs already on the roster, Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. With all those running backs on the roster, there might not be enough carries to go around, but Shanahan would like to try.

However, Shanahan isn’t sure if Washington is the place Westbrook wants to go. Asked by reporters if he had talked to Westbrook or his agent, Shanahan answered, “No, but if you guys hear anything, just tell him that we’re ready.”
