JaMarcus Russell could be joining the UFL

NFL_russell1.jpgLast month, Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reported that former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell won’t be playing in the AFL or the CFL

In the end, Russell could be landing in the UFL.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the expansion Omaha Nighthawks could be signing Russell, who would team up with running back Ahman Green in the team’s backfield.

There’s still a long way to go before Russell would actually join the team, the internal discussions have begun, and they will continue.

He’d become the second former first-round NFL quarterback to join the five-team league for 2010.  Recently, Daunte Culpepper agreed to terms with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Russell presumably is holding out hope for an NFL job.  But he ultimately needs to ask himself whether it makes more sense to hold a clipboard on game days — or actually get live reps against guys who are good but not great football players.

Or maybe he just wants the steaks.

  1. Im thinking the UFL has the right idea. If they keep taking the big names that do not pan out in the nfl they will have a pretty entertaining league.

  2. biggest bust ever in the NFL…..
I wonder if he could be the biggest bust ever in the UFL?!?!?

  3. He’s going to be Nebraska’s pro version of Tommy Frasier!
No, wait, I mean he looks like he ATE Tommy Frasier.

  4. He would be much better off in the UFL. He has enough money that he shouldn’t have to worry about the difference in pay, and there would be far less pressure in the UFL.
In the NFL he could have to worry about stepping in to the live game with elite athletes when it is clear that he needs more work. In the UFL he can get that work while facing relatively easier competition.
The only question is, could his recievers actually be better in the UFL than they were in Oakland (DHB?)

  5. I have a feeling he’d join pop warner if someone told him the coaches take the team out for pizza after a game, win or lose.

  6. “He’d become the second former first-round NFL quarterback to join the five-team league for 2010. Recently, Daunte Culpepper agreed to terms with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.”
Somewhere out there, J.P. Losman is offended.

  7. If the UFL is trying to be more successfull short term, this is the right way to go. Sign a bunch of big name has-beens or never-weres and hope you generate enough buzz to draw interest to your games.
However, if the goal is what I kind of thought it was when they started- to present themselves as a viable “minor league” for the NFL to replace NFL Europe, with the NFL eventually investing in or buying it- then filling roster spots with players the NFL has given up on might not be the best way to go.

  8. Why would he? He’s already swindled his millions, pulling a Bernie Madoff on the NFL and Raiders. The dude should just build a Scrooge McDuck vault and swim in his millions

  9. I don’t know why he would do anything but swim in a pool filled with money at this point.

  10. There is no way Jamarcus “The Burrito” Russell is going to play in the UFL for small money.

  11. He couldn’t cut it in the CFL or AFL, not as a QB, anyway. You need to be athletic to succeed in those leagues, not fat. I guess maybe he could play OL there.
The UFL is probably his best fit.

  12. Swindled his millions???
If you were offered that big of a payday, wouldn’t you sign on the dotted line? Raiders were dumb enough to pick him. League is powerless enough to let these rediculous contracts for rookies be this large.
Russell will be back in the NFL as a starter one day. Likely never an MVP or HOF. But he’ll be back.

yeah if Losman was actually playing in the UFL for the 2010 season he might be offended
but since he’s playing in the NFL for 2010, he might not be too offended

  14. yeah I think the UFL has the right idea. I dont think I would ever see any former NFL players go to the arena league. they’re setting themselves up nicely to take over as the D-league for the NFL. It will do way better than europe from a support standpoint especially if its part of the NFL

  15. If he has two brain cells he should go into the UFL. That’s what that big dummy Vick should have done. Get some reps, show some of the NFL teams who needs a QB what you’ve got and join after the UFL season is done. He doesn’t need the money, he needs a re-do. I just listened to a QB coach on the radio who still thinks fat boy has the most talent but needs to work on his mechanics and work ethic.

  16. Why would he want to embarrass himself for sucking at the UFL level just as badly as he did in the NFL ? He’s already got more than enough money for his family to live well for several generations after all.

Agreed, unless he’s broke, which I wouldn’t doubt.

  18. So sending Russell to Omaha to eat all the steaks he wants is like sending Cromartie to NY to father more children with more women. Both don’t make sense.

First of all, haaaaahahahahah…that made my morning!
Second, maybe this is the best thing for him. Let him hone his skills for a couple of seasons and try to get back into the NFL. He sure as heck has the arm, now he just needs many many many more snaps.

  20. I think the talent level in the UFL is too good for Kirstie Russell’s skill set.

  21. Jamarcus Russell is exactly what the Omaha Nighthawks need. A big, fat offensive lineman to open up holes for Ahman Green.

  22. I noticed a “C” on his jersey in that photo above. First, I never knew, or really cared that he was a captain. Second, who in the hell rigged that vote to make him a captain of anything?

  23. If the UFL break out 7 figures, Russell will show up. But Russell isn’t going to get out of his chair for less than $1million.

I don’t know why he would do anything but swim in a pool filled with money at this point.
Because swimming requires exertion of energy.

  25. NOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I just picked the Nighthawks in my UFL Fantasy League – this could destroy their chances!

  26. Does that “C” on his jersey stand for ‘CEPTIONS, cause he couldn’t have possibly been chosen as a team Captain, right?

  27. “He’d become the second former first-round NFL quarterback to join the five-team league for 2010. Recently, Daunte Culpepper agreed to terms with the Sacramento Mountain Lions.”
Dude, i know J.P. Losman sucks but remembr he was a first round pick too, u guys should like research ur stuff before u write ur articles…

  28. If the guy could not get motivated to play in the NFL why in the hell would he want to play in the UFL. I think he is looking for money cause the guy is so stupid it would not surprise me if he has blown most of his money. He didnt pocket $39 million after he paid taxes, agent fast food and everything else he blew it on. Guy might have walked away with $15 million maybe a little more. And a guy like that could blow that real quick. Plus he has to worry about giving $9 million of it back possibly.

He definitely was the biggest C —(word that can’t be typed without getting banned) on the team.

I don’t think filling up roster spots with washed up has beens that the NFL could care less about like Duante Culpepper, Ahman Green, and Jamarcus Russell is the right way to set yourself up as the D-League for the NFL.

  31. C’mon Florio, if you’re gonna add my joke to the end of the post at least gimme credit. 🙂

  32. Good idea for JaMarcus – if he starts to look like a QB, then he might get a shot in the NFL again.
But, if he fails in the UFL……yikes!!

OMG do you people read or what?
Losman is not in the UFL for the 2010 season, HENCE this is why he is not mentioned
    unreal

  34. He was unmotivated at the NFL level, I can only imagine what he will be like in the UFL….I can see it now…. a cigar, bag of chips, and a 12 pack sitting by him on the sideline.

  35. I also hear that there’s a disgusting place in Omaha that serves fried Carp. That’s right, garbage eating, bottom feeding CARP.
    Jamarcus Russell is fat.

I had to read that right before lunch time? Bleh.

  37. And just think a few week ago Russell said it was the NFL or nothing. This guy is just showing more and more everyday how much of a fat POS loser he is.

  38. Isn’t that akin to Vanilla Ice still touring?
Both are something nobody wants to see.

  39. Its Painfully obvious to me that most of you guys know very little about the UFL(Hartford Colonials season ticket holder here) Let me educate you guys a little bit.
    1. Players are payed a flat rate for playing the season($25,000 for kickers, $35,000 for everyone else, with no more than a $10,000 signing bonus.)
So anyone that thinks Russell would join the UFL for any other reason than the kid just wants to play football is off the mark.
    2. I dont understand why people want this to become a D-league for the NFL or, even worse, want the NFL to own it. Seriously, who enjoys paying $45 for a T-shirt because it has an NFL logo on it??
Anything the NFL touches turns to greed. I dont want them to ruin the UFL too.
    3. When is Hartford gonna make some aggressive player moves??? They cant go into the season with McCown or Andre Woodson at QB and expect to be competitive.
To me the UFL is a breath of fresh air in the world of football, no Cry babies with 100 million dollar contracts. No overpriced tickets and merchandise, it costs me over $700 to take my family to a NFL game…Who the hell can afford that?? Just world class athletes playing the game they love.
If you cant understand that, keep making the low blow shots at the UFL. Keep playing the same crappy madden game every year, go buy the 300 “throwback” jersey on nfl shop. Leave the real football to us UFL fans.

  40. “Leave the real football to us UFL fans.”
Lawrence Taylor thinks you should stop smoking crack.

  41. @venis2k1
Just imagine how much more UFL education we would get if the other 5 season ticket holders found this site.
Seriously, season tickets? to the UFL? Was NFL.com sold out of Tim Tebow Jerseys?

  42. What a joke, I thought he would only be playing in the NFL. Here is a little News Flash, if the Raiders Draft you and you have potential they will give you every chance to pan out.
For Al Davis to dump a guy like this they had to see that he had 0 chance at ever becoming an NFL QB. Word going around Oakland is that even if he applied himself that he is not smart enough to be an NFL QB.
He cannot read a D or coverages. He cannot call out line adjustments or audible. He is only able to run 1/3rd of the Raiders play book and they have to pair it down to a High School version for him to be able to run it. He can only read 1/2 the field on pass plays and can only throw after he see’s the receiver open, he has no anticipation on his throws. Add in he is the size of a whale at 24 and the odds say he will only get bigger, moves like a sperm whale in the pocket and could not feel a Bus heading for him at 100 miles per hour with someone yelling in his ear it is comming.
This Bum sat back the Raiders by 3 full years and the PIG was to lazy to work to do his job. It will not be long until you hear that he is wrestling on TV. You Fat Ass Bum you belong in the UFL.
Look at the Raiders and how far they have moved forward and to think all it took was kicking your FAT ASS TO THE CURB.

  43. Well said venis2k1.
@whoever said his UFL receivers would be better than his NFL receivers, too true, except for Zack Miller.
And what is JaWalrus doing being a captain? Captains are supposed to set the example, not eat it.

  44. 1. Players are payed a flat rate for playing the season($25,000 for kickers, $35,000 for everyone else, with no more than a $10,000 signing bonus.)
    —-
    From a previous PFT post
The sole exception will be the league’s four starting quarterbacks. Though there’s no stated limit regarding their pay, each UFL teams is permitted to pay its starting quarterback an amount more than $35,000.

  45. Venis2k1: Last year, I believe there were a handful of players (J. P. Losman, Simeon Rice, not sure which others) in the UFL that were exempt from the $35,000 salary. I think the Commissioner had to approve all of them before they could be signed.
Assuming the UFL is going about its business in the same manner, JaMarcus Russell could receive an exemption. Since there are more regular-season games this season (8) than last (6), you can also factor that in. The base salary would be just less than $50K in 2010.

  46. he is too big to live in a car. maybe a van or a full size pickup truck bed.
of course the springs would bottom out instantly…
he is a no interest no talent hack. he makes ookie the dogkiller and chauncey pullpecker look good, and they suck.
he isnt waiting for an injury to an nfl qb. the other guys might be. he is waiting for them, existing starters, and every other unemployed or employed backup qb or possible rookie walk-on to get hurt. then he might can move up.

  47. You can’t fix Stupid or lazy . He does not have the work ethic to be a sucsess in the NFL and cannot read a defense . He’s done ! He gots his money and bling he’s done!

  48. Thing is, the UFL has NEVER put themselves forward as any kind of minor league, d-league or anything like that. That perception has come from fans (like you) alone.
