Jets say Greene at forefront of backfield; Tomlinson unaware

On Monday, ESPN aired an interview with LaDainian Tomlinson, where the former Chargers running back made a few bold statements, the type of statements that would have been atypical for the classy star early in his career, but have been very typical of late.

I’ll win a Super Bowl,” Tomlinson said about his upcoming time in New York.  “No question. Absolutely.”

Predictions like that are encouraged under Rex Ryan, so we barely gave the quote a second thought.  Tomlinson’s thoughts on his role in New York were more telling.

“We’re obviously competing,” Tomlinson said about him and Shonn Greene.   “And I think the best man is going to win the starting job.  . . .  I think I’m tired of being doubted by so many people about what I can’t do.”

But does Tomlinson really have a chance to start?  On the same day Tomlinson made these comments, the Jets’ website splashed a story on their front page with the following headline: “Greene’s at the forefront of the backfield.”

The piece touts Greene as the guy.  Tomlinson sounds like an afterthought to be used in “select situations.”  Conspiracy theorists think the timing of the article is no coincidence.

Hmmm,” Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post writes.  “Sounds like the Jets are trying to send a
message of their own
. Lead stories don’t get on team Web sites by
accident.

We won’t go that far, but we are interested to see how Tomlinson reacts when the best man wins the starting job in September.

  1. This is the same LT that couldn’t win the starting RB job over Darren Sproles?

  2. It’s ok LT…let it go, you use to play a mean game now all you can do is talk a mean game….it’s ok to retire, you have nothing left to prove….except perhaps that you may be “concussed”

  3. Stir the pot!!
this story has NO legs. LT wants to compete, Greene is the returning RB and younger.

  4. whats the shock? Its been widely reported LT is the Leon Washington of 2010….another non story

  5. Great…..now that we know where LT’s head is at we get to watch him cry some more when it doesnt happen….
    2010 Jets….8 – 8

  6. If Dan Marino had a backfield composed of Greene and Tomlinson he’d have 5 rings. Instead he had Mark Higgs, Tony Nathan, and Bernie Parmalee. So he has none. Joe Namath has 1.

  7. He could be demoted to 3rd string and Madden 11 will give him a 90 rating just cause he’s a former name on the Jets. haha

  8. Every offseason, the previous years ‘Cinderella’ gets way over hyped.
We’ve seen it with the Bungals, Seahawks, and now, Jets.
Sanchez and Revis will be the demise of the Green

  9. During the interview on ESPN, Tomlinson said that he knew he was going to be used for those “select situations”. he said “whether I’m catching the ball out of the backfield, picking up a blitzer, or going to the flats for screens” he was going to do what was asked of him. Paolantonio kept pestering him on the starting spot, LT simply said it was a competition and that he was going to compete. Everyone is writing him off as a hasbeen, as im doing as well, but the dude said very humbly that he just wanted to compete and that he believes we dont give him enough credit. Greene will be the guy, but competition brings out the best in everyone. Quit pushing an issue that you have created. He said he’ll compete, and he said that the Jets will win the superbowl. All that says to me is that he’s telling the truth. Not stating he’ll be the guy. Quit trying to make a story. Idiots.

  10. Shonn Greene’s the starter. Period. Woody wanted LDT to sell PSLs. I love my Jets, but first name Woody and last name Johnson the guy has to be a dick.

  11. However you feel about tomlinson…I’ll never forget when he was a COMPLETE COWARD..in 2007 AFC Champ game.
Rivers played w/a knee 10x worse than tomlinson…who was more worried about himself than his team….not to mention, not needin g surgery to recoup.
Tomlinson is a slime bucket..and fits well in ny, where it’s watch your back everywhere.
If jet fans think Tomlinson as opposed to Washington/Jones is anywhere near remotely equal…they need some more meds.

  12. not a LT apologist at all,but how does anyone even know that greene will in fact be the better back, the small dose we saw of him he was hurt twice and didntr produce till the playoffs, maybe he cant hold up for a full season, maybe its al just more new jersey jet bull crap

  13. This is the same LT that couldn’t win the starting RB job over Darren Sproles?
No, idiot, its not. Sproles was never the starter. LT alwasy started ahead of him, got more carries and scored more TDs. Now that LT is gone, they went out and got another RB to be the starter instead of Sproles. Where you got the idea that Sproles ever beat out LT is beyond me.

  14. The Jets’ locker room implosion is beginning 2 months sooner than expected.

  15. “I think I’m tired of being doubted by so many people about what I can’t do.”

Yes, but too bad you don’t have Marino. You have Dirty Sanchez. Good thing it’s not a QB driven league, oh ya, it is.

  17. The NFL is a cutthroat league, and you have to be intensely competitive to succeed, but this guy always talks about himself. He’s not saying, “I’ll do whatever it takes to win. Don’t care where, don’t care what, don’t have to start. It’s all about the team, about us winning a ring.” He’s saying, “I’ll win a Super Bowl. I want to be the starter. I’m tired of people calling me a bitch.” As a Raider fan I have to hate the guy anyway, but at least when he was younger he just went out there and whipped our asses quietly. He complained once in awhile about some of the stuff that happened in the pile, but that was about it. Now he’s just an insufferable little prick. Maybe he’s taken a few head shots too many.

  18. What about my man Braylon?
Ain’t nobody showing any respect for “Hands of Stone”!
Is he #1 on the depth chart for wideouts?
He be workin out everyday stretching those alligator arms. He now stretches them out a little of six inches!
Ain’t been drinkin either since Donte moved on to them Ravens!
Between “Hands of Stone” droppin passes and LT gettin dropped behind the line of scrimmage, I don’t see any problem in the JETS goin 8-8 this year!

  19. Yes, but too bad you don’t have Marino. You have Dirty Sanchez. Good thing it’s not a QB driven league, oh ya, it is.
    ——————————————————————————
You know that Marino was a Dolphin right?

  20. LT is a class act in his own mind. Dude is spent. The turf monster got hold of him and he’s now done. What a pathetic joke he’s become.

  21. The Jets hating is so funny. They don’t seem like a team anyone should care enough about to hate. I guess Rex started this and he will finish it…….with a Super Bowl Trophy.

I know this. I just like to keep reminding the Jest that they passed on him.

  23. At least with LT on the team no one else will ever wear the goat horns for giving the other teams bulletin board material! LOL

  24. That’s not a good call.
    Naw!
    You don’t like that call!
    I don’t like that call.
    Not a very good call!

  25. LT’s interview with espn was HILARIOUS. I’m a Bolts season tix holder and was a huge LT fan. I’ve lost all kinds of respect for this guy. For him to make that stupid quip about going into HOF with Jets was the ultimate slap in the face for Charger fans. He’s the biggest fraud, phony I’ve seen in pro sports. Put LT in a tough spot and his real personality comes out. He’s a baby.

  26. I suppose PFT couldn’t resist the opportunity to invent a controversy.
In the interview which you quote, Sal Palantonio directly asked Tomlinson if he needs to be the starter. Tomlinson said no, because he knows that he has a role on the team.
    Didn’t sound disgruntled to me.

  27. Whatever LT said during the interview is basically an afterthought because LT is delusional about his abilities.
It’s kinda of twisted irony here, that with the jets, they HAD a running back in Thomas Jones that is a few years older than LT, but KEEPS PUTTING UP THE NUMBERS. And, THE JETS JETTISONED him off. For what? A guy who is slower and has less than 1/10 of the heart as Thomas Jones. The jets, NO DOUBT, have taken a step back at the RB position. It will be PAINFULLY obvious this year when they need those 2 tough yards on third down, and LT takes a one yard loss! And, who in God’s name is going to catch the ball? Edwards…..yeah right! Just call him scissor hands……Holmes is an OK receiver, but that’s about it.
The jets D will keep them in games, but the painful reality is that you need a strong offense to win a championship. The “defense” wins championships” is SO wrong. The 85 Bears, maybe throw in the 2000 Ravens…..possibly the 02 Bucs…..that’s about it. The reality is, you need a very good to excellent offense to win it all.
Not a jet hater here, I just don’t see the jets doing much better than 8-8 with their very weak offense. They will rely TOO much on Sanchez, a QB that had more INTs than TDs last year, and he is suddenly a stud? Nope, the jets got in to the playoffs by virtue of the colts deciding to rest their players. The jets will not make the playoffs this year….I actually see them 7-9.
The over-hype for a very average jets team is comical.

  28. Holy F… NYmets said something nice and accurate about Marino… He must have bumped his head even harder than LT did. LT is washed. Greene is your future. And that future is as Miami’s bit*h.

  29. (from Rambo)
    “It’s over Johnny, it’s over”
Some guys just don’t know when it’s time.

  30. Honestly, people need to stop. LT knows he’s going to get like 100-150 carries and he’s fine with it.
I don’t quite understand all the jets hate. The Jets are more or less on par with Baltimore, yet no one says a rude thing about them. Mind you, they have a young QB who has also struggled at times, a drunk driving murderer at WR, a crybaby whose always hurt in Boldin, and a defense that is aging. I like the Ravens, but just because a team is from New York it doesn’t warrant all of the hate.
It’s the off season and instead of complaining, people should really do their research.

  31. There is no need to wonder what will happen. we’ve seen this movie before and we know how it ends – with “classy” LDT sitting on the bench with his Darth Helmet visor pulled down.

  32. Does anybody who reads this site watch any TV? He said he was there to do whatever they needed him to do wether it be catch passes or block. He never stated, or indicated in any way, that he deserves to be the starter. I love reading PFT, but it’s quite annoying when you twist words to make up a story in the offseason.

  33. As a Raider fan myself, I’ve been hating the guy since he came out of TCU. Hated his guts on the field, but respected his game. He dominated us quite a bit, to say the least. And the freaking guy was classy. Okay fine.
Then he just turned into a whiny bitch all of a sudden. Bitching when the Patriots kicked their asses in that afc playoff game; saying they were showboating, disrespecting. Then he does that sulking crap on the bench while Rivers is out there playing with his leg about to fall off. ’07 wasn’t it?
The Jets are gonna be interesting to watch this season with all the story lines and contract disputes and other drama going on. If Sanchez doesn’t regress they’ll be alright. But winning the Super Bowl? I don’t know about all that.

  34. thomas jones was only as good as his offensive line. lt wouldnt have a bust year with an offensive line thats this good. and whys everyone writing off shonn greene? he kicked ass in the playoffs and all u losers can come up with is what?
the jets will lead the league in rushing due to its offensive line even without faneca. and theyre defense only got better…hate as much as u want on jason taylor but the bottom line is if he cant play hes gone. period.
    jets win 12 games

  35. acers:
say what u say about edwards im not gonna call im our best option but your forgettin an excellent receiver in cotchery, holmes is way better than “just ok”, and a monster tight end in dustin keller

He was a baby when he played for the Chargers too, bigbolt.
But I guess that’s different, right?

  37. @ramshacklar
We’ll see how on “par” you are with Bmore when we open on MNF and hand you the first loss in your new stadium…
…You won’t run on the solar eclipse that is Cody-Ngata so you’re only luck is to air it out. Meanwhile, Holmes (who is consistently giving the Ravens fits) is NOT PLAYING

  38. Gag green BLOW HARDS! So, what’s new. They continue to embarrass themselves every time they open their gob. They’re too stupid to realize that every team wants to crush them and shut them up. Get ready for 4-12 jetskis.
    Joke of a franchise.

  39. I don’t have a problem with LT thinking its an open competition, it’ll only mean he’ll be playing as well as he can once September comes around. Shonn Greene is a beast, he played well last year and if anybody’s seen his game tape from Iowa the dude you’d know the dude has been lighting people up for years now, it wasn’t a fluke last season. He’s built for it. If Greene didn’t get hurt against Indy we might’ve had a shot. As for people saying we have a weak offense, the Jets have the best O line, we picked up Santonio Holmes, Sanchez was playing well through the playoffs and should play well as a second year qb, we’ve got Dustin Keller at te, Braylon Edwards opposite Holmes and Jerricho Cotchery in the slot… I think Sanchez has his targets… So the weak offense thing really comes down to how you feel about Sanchez. People can hate all they want but the truth is it takes at least 3-4 years for QBs to develop into true studs, Sanchez still has time.

  40. @ SomeFans
Get ready for 4-12? It’s kinda early to be drinking, don’t you think? I’m not one of these Jets fans who guarantees the Super Bowl, but I’ll take the over on that one.

  41. THIS IS HORRIBLE REPORTING. Go watch the interview again. He clearly says he will do whatever the team needs him to do whether it was catching passes or running out of the backfield. he obviously didnt think he was going to start that comment about tired of people doubting him comes much later in the interview. nice story jack-ass, you suck at your job

Ok, going to put you on the spot, homer. Which games will the Jets lose then?

  43. The Jets are a solid, middle of the pack team. I could see them between 7-9 and 9-7. It really depends on how the Dolphins, Texans, Steelers, Ravens and Bengals play to decide if they make it or not. Obviously, one of the last 3 will win the AFC North, but that’s still two spots for 5 teams. It’ll be a dogfight for them to make the playoffs.

Monster? The dude has 5 Tds in 2 seasons, averaging 528 yards a season.
Not bad numbers, but a monster?
Antonio Gates – Last 2 seasons
16 Tds, 930 Yds per season.
    THAT is a monster!!

I gotta agree with Bleeding Green on this one. As much as I hate them.
With Denver, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo x 2, that’s 5 wins right there.
The rest of the games could go either way, depending on how good the D is and how Sanchez progresses.

  46. I totally agree with bigbolt… He didn’t say anything too stupid in that interview until he said he would go into the HOF as a Jet. That was such a classless backhanded slap in the face to Chargers fans. Good job alienating the entire fan base that stood behind you your entire career, jackass.
Also, Jet fans please stop annointing your O-Line as the best in the league. You are the only ones who think that, and it’s just one more tired assumption based on nothing but the complete arrogance that radiates from your HC. Translation: It makes you look like morons.

    ________________
Jets will get smoked by the Packers, probably split with the Dolphins, lose both to the Pats and might also split with Buffalo. That’s at least 5 losses right there. They’ll also blow a couple of close games and have 1 surprise blowout loss. I’d say they end up 8-8, maybe 7-9 or 9-7.

  49. LT couldnt win a superbowl in San Diego… So now he goes to the Jets and think he’s going to win One ….Like Chalie Murphy once said in an episode of the Chappelle show ” there are some great story tellers in the world but who the F@#$ can make that up”. All you Jets fans think the man is washed up and has been for 3 yrs now.He is going to do what he did as a Charger and talk a big game and when the moment comes run in the corner with his helmet on and cry. What A B@##$.
