D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with third-round pick Morgan Burnett on a four-year contract. Burnett is a safety out of Georgia Tech.
An early entrant into the draft, Burnett intercepted a whopping 11 passes during his final two seasons for the Yellow Jackets. He can also tackle, tying for first on the team in that category last year. Burnett was timed in the mid-4.4s at his mid-March Pro Day, also posting an impressive 39.5" vertical and 11-foot long jump.
Though Burnett had something of a reputation for biting on play-action fakes at Georgia Tech, we were surprised to see him last all the way to round three. In April, we ranked Burnett as the third-best safety in the draft, behind only Eric Berry and Earl Thomas. He was the sixth safety drafted, behind Berry, Thomas, Nate Allen, T.J. Ward, and Taylor Mays.
There’s no question that Bennett made more plays in college than each of the latter three.
The Packers may have gotten themselves a steal, and a first-year starter. With disgruntled strong safety Atari Bigby staying away from offseason workouts, Burnett took all of the first-team reps. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has suggested that Burnett is the Packers’ most likely rookie to make a major year-one impact.
