Bucs G.M. Mark Dominik may be sorry that he lied about his ability to fine tackle Donald Penn and joked about the tackle’s weight, but the team isn’t ready to hand Penn a new contract with training camp around the corner.
Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times reports that the Bucs don’t plan any meaningful discussions about giving Penn a contract extension before camp.
Ranked by some as a top-ten left tackle, Penn remains an unsigned restricted free agent that is not subject to fines for skipping more work. Eventually, he should show up. In the meantime, we expect to hear Bucs coaches lavish praise on untested former basketball player Demar Dotson, who will step in for Penn on the left side.
And we don’t expect to believe any of it.
