Ravens secondary suffers another massive blow: Foxworth out for year

D. foxworth.jpgEntering training camp, Ravens starting cornerback  Domonique Foxworth was practically the only member of the team’s secondary that wasn’t injured.

Now he’s out for the season.

Multiple reports out of Baltimore indicate Foxworth tore his ACL, apparently during the Ravens’ non-contact “orientation” practice on Thursday.  (UPDATE: Ravens coach John Harbaugh quickly confirmed the news.)

This is a devastating blow for a secondary that we already wrote about was in rough shape heading into camp.  The next two best cornerbacks on the team — Lardarius Webb and Fabian Washington — are both recovering from their own torn ACLs from last year and are uncertain to be ready for the start of the season.  Ed Reed’s status is also up in the air.

G.M. Ozzie Newsome has some major work to do.

  1. Not even a ravens fan but this is huge, gotta be very disappointing for ravens fans. the ravens pass defense was like swiss cheese last year and it’s gonna be even worse this year. just when they add some pieces to the offense, the defense goes south.

  2. Oh great, another excuse and incessant whining we’ll hear every week when they lose (along with the conspiracy by the refs of course). If that team saved their whining they’d have a lot more energy at the end of the year.

  3. UH OH, Vivian Foxworth out for the year, another example as why they are the leading candidates to win the AFC North…
Sorry boutcha now who covers Chad, TO and Antonio? Good luck to ya Ozzie

  4. So the Ravens already “over-the hill” defense suffers another blow, the WAY over-confident Bungals have NEVER had back 2 back playoff years, and then of course the beloved Brownies.
Man, I am just starting to LOVE my STEELERS chances more and more now!!! Number Seven is gonna be HEAVEN!!!!!!!
    .

  5. Well you never like to cheer injuries (unless it’s a goofy one like falling down two flights of steps) so I will keep it respectful.

  6. Hmm, At what point do the pundits start thinking this team is going to have problems this year.
Boldin is one concussion away from being out for the year as well.
My reco to defenses is – Shut down Rice, you shut down the Ravens.
81 and 85 are licking their chops.

  7. They were one of my superbowl favorites a week ago and now they are done. You can’t get through the AFC with a bad pass defense. Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger, Palmer, Rivers. They are going to have to go through at least one of those teams to get to the Super Bowl. Not happening with a bad secondary.

  8. Say Hello to the Browns this year. Better be able to put up 50+ a game to beat anyone. gonna be a battle all year for the gutter of the AFC North.

  9. Hooo Boy. Don’t sound too good. T.O. and Ochocinco must be lickin their chops.

  10. Wow, the most boring division in the NFL just got a little weaker. Now what, the Browns will lose Shaun Rogers to an eating disorder?

  11. If Frau Farbissina’s girlfriend was as great a QB as he thinks he is, this wouldn’t matter- but he isn’t.

  12. the ravens pass defense was like swiss cheese last year and it’s gonna be even worse this year.
    ———-
damn sure gonna be worse this year…but it was #8 overall last year, not quite swiss cheese.

  13. This is where the Ravens would have signed Pacman. It’s like Mike Brown can see into the future.

  14. Three names: Jabari Greer, Tracey Porter, Malcom Jenkins.
Who are they? Excellent question! They were the starting cornerbacks for the New Orleans Saints last year.
I guess having a weak area isn’t necessarily all doom and gloom. But I wouldn’t expect you to be a voice of reason, Florio.

  15. I wasn’t too worried about the Ravens anyway. Florio predicted them as Super Bowl Champs. Didn’t he say the Redskins were going to win it all just a year or two ago?

Put ya money up if you’re confident….Im a Bengals fan….we can meet on pay pal….LOL
Ravens 2010 AFC North Champs???? REALY???????
    YEAH OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. Foxworth got what he deserved! Thats Karma for being a union pansy and being a snitch on the Ravens during OTA’s for too much contact.

  18. It doesnt matter how many players the Ravens lose, or even how many games they lose, they are still going to win the Super Bowl.

  19. @ronmexico,
Post of the day. I was wondering why more people havent pointed this out. Ed Reed just smiled inside as he will be on the field soon!
Still won’t stop the 85/81 show!!

  20. How’s this for an idea: we wait until the ACTUAL GAMES ARE PLAYED before saying a secondary or a team are going to be bad. They were the SECOND BEST pass D in the league last year after their bye (for all the idiots that act like their pass d was bad). The ONLY reason they get talked about as if they were bad is because people look at the team and can’t find a SINGLE weakness, so they have to invent one (seriously, how else do you justify acting like the SECOND BEST pass defense in the NFL after about week 6 is a WEAKNESS?) Huge blow, yes, but if Webb and Washington come back healthy (Washington is already cleared to practice) and playing at the same level as last year, they will be fine. Not to mention, there pass rush will be much improved, since, by all accounts, Terrell Suggs is in TREMENDOUS shape (after being overweight and recording 4 1/2 sacks last year). I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again- BY FAR the most concerning thing about the ravens is how much the NFL is going to rig their games.

  21. Since 1996 the Ravens have won one Super Bowl (2000 beating the pedestrian Kerry Collins) and won their division twice (2003 & 2006).
In all they have made the playoffs six times — four of the six as wild cards.

  22. This does not matter one bit with Joe Flaco at the helm. The Ravens are going to sweep the division and WIN the Super Bowl. Period.
Cincinnati has no depth whatsoever. Pittsburg is past their prime. and Cleveland flat out sucks!! This is the year of the Purple baby!!!!!!!
    (LMAO)

  23. This doesn’t help the team, but it’s not like we are talking about Revis or Nnamdi going down. Plug in the next guy and move along.
Upgrading Flacco on the cheatsheets now might not be a bad idea though too…

    1) Actually, tied for #8 against the pass, and #3 overall.
    2) This makes the additions to the front 7 that much more important. Good thing they don’t face an elite QB until week 6.

  25. Steeler fans should be rejoicing. They just hired a turnstile to protect the most sacked QB in the NFL (tied with aaron rogers). I can’t wait for week 6.

  26. So in Foxworth’s own words…….since he has the “potential” to make ZERO tackles and interceptions this year, does that mean he shouldn’t get paid?

  27. BY FAR the most concerning thing about the ravens is how much the NFL is going to rig their games.
    ———
please don’t say that….not only is it not true it just perpetuates the idea of conspiracy-theorist ravens fans complaining about the refs…you are obviously one of them, i am not.

  28. southflasteel…..you are calling the Ravens over the hill???? The steelers are one of the oldest teams in the NFL!
With that upgrade to your OL and your equally as crappy secondary….you should be feeling way better about your steelers chances….HAHAHAHAHA….good one.

Of course, if the Ravens don’t win, it couldn’t possibly be a bad decision by a coach or a bad play by a player, it must be someone in the NFL cheating my precious team!!!

  30. Last chance Florio – you want to rethink that “Ravens Super Bowl champion” prediction of yours?

  31. In all the years I have watched and been a fan of football, I have never cheered when someone else’s player was injured. Love you Steeler fans. Nice class.
Like Brian Billick used to say. Next man up.
Let’s play the games before we decide who is winning and who is losing. But what is obviously evident is that the people on this blog, who would cheer the injury of a guy like Foxy who is by all accounts an intelligent hard working young man, lack even a modicum of class.
Get well Foxy. See you in 9 months.

  32. Could not have happened to a better team! Go Steelers!!!

  33. Please dont forget that even with all of our injuries last year the Ravens still had the 3rd ranked D in the NFL….I believe they even finshed ahead of the steelers…..

  34. All of a sudden I’m feeling better and better about the Pats passing on Kindle and taking McCourtey.
Superbowl of Bust? If this keeps up they’ll be lucky to make the playoffs.

  35. Yea I’m really concerned about the Ravens defense! Check the numbers over the past 10 years and call me. I love that this is all happening now just the type of hurdles they need early to keep their heads on straight for the season.
Foxworth was healthy but not much more than that.

  36. I like how fans of teams who got lucky last year (Bengals) and a team who can’t win without their rapist (Steelers) can talk so much trash on a team who has consistent since 2000…. I just don’t get it. Good luck to you pansies next year.

  37. What the hell does Domonique Foxworth’s season-ending knee injury have to do with Ed Reed’s “getting paid” for suffering from debilitating, degenerative injuries and advanced age? They play different positions and they will miss a MINIMUM of a combined 22 games this season.
So you guys are saying that the Ravens are now dumb enough to spend millions on an insurance policy that can’t provide any insurance because he can’t play the same position and/or can’t physically run bc of massive, severe career-threatening injuries???

  38. I think it would be wise for everyone to keep quiet before bragging about a teams injury. I’m not a Ravens fan (I’m a Bengals fan) but the Bengals camp just started and cringe when I hear stories about what happened at camp during the day. I hope to never hear injury news.
There will be more players who will be lost for the season during training camp unfortunately.

  39. Just think, if the Ravens had an extra LT that they do not really need (Jared Gaither) they could do a trade with a team that is loaded in their secondary, but who needs a better LT (such as the Bills). Gaither for Drayton Florence, or Gaither and Troy Smith for Florence and another CB or FS (Donte Whitner?) from the Bills. Or if they wanted a blockbuster trade, what about Oher for Leodis McKelvin.

  40. Its the Ravens own fauly. Seven draft picks this year and NO CBs picked, even with two CBs from last year coming off injury.

  41. Although I’ve always thought the Bengals are the class of that division (they swept both the Steelers and Ravens last year, simply being more physical than both on both sides of the ball), I’d thought the Ravens would still edge out Pittsburgh with all their turmoil due to Roethlisberger’s exploits and the banishment of Holmes in the off-season.
However, Baltimore is shaping up to be that inevitable team that almost every year falls well short of expectations. My money would be on either them, the Saints, or jets. The Ravens seem to be getting all the breaks to be a shoe in though from the Ed Reed situation to the rookie cracking his skull, to the fact that they barely even made the playoffs last year with a noticably less effective defense to the fact that Boldin and Mason are both number 2 receivers while they still lack a true number one. Might be Baltimore’s year to sit this post season out.

  42. I’m not even a bengals fan and I think they can shut down the ravens offense put jj on boldin hall on mason and PAC on stallworth or they could blitz and put flacco on his A$$

  43. They might want to call the Eagles. Joe and Howie will trade a starting CB for a 3rd string LB and 5th rounder.

  45. Well to be fair, the Ravens arent getting any younger. Trevor Price is more than a little past his prime. Same with Kelly Gregg. Ngata is injured (and while he should be healed by the opener [easily], once a guy gets hurt and can’t condition the same, more injuries seem to spring up), Suggs isn’t “old”, per se, but he’s already played in 109 games, which takes its toll on the body and was a non-factor last season. Ray Lewis is old and washed up – a shadow of his former self. Gooden is a backup. Johnson is an ok player…but really? If you’re hanging your hat on Jarret Johnson being a difference maker…come on. And then, of course, the secondary. Enough said.

ALL of your injuries? The Steelers did without their two best defensive players last year (A. Smith and Troy) for something like 20 combined games and finished 5th overall (77 total yards behind your Ravens). Who the hell did you lose that were THAT important to your defense? The only comparison can be losing a Ngata and Ed Reed for almost the whole season.

You sir, are without a doubt, THE dumbest ass in captivity! The NFL rigging your games….REALLY. Your really going to start this crap even before the first game is played?? Unbelieveable. Not a single weakness??? Your secondary is and has been one of your biggest weakness for a long time! You had better hope the Steelers don’t step up their game this year. If so, it’s hello 3rd place for the shitbirds!

  48. Stillers43….Fabian Washington, Lardarius Webb, Haruki Nakamura, Brendon Ayanbadejo, Samari Rolle all on IR, Ed Reed out 4 games not nearly 100% all others and Ngata out 2 games and not 100% many more…is Troy your entire defense…

  49. If this doesn’t sound REALLY Bengalesque I don’t know what does.
As a fan of the guys in stripes I have seen year after year go down in flames as one injury after another wiped them out before the season even began. Last year it was with TEs and before that it was defense. Well, maybe, just maybe the Bengals handed the injury curse off to someone else, namely the Ratbirds. What a pity, huh Bengal fans?

  50. The raod to the Super Bowl always has, and always will, go through Pittsburgh. It’s just the way it is.

This comment is so meaningless. Every team deals with injuries.

  53. Hope I don’t sound like a d!ck but Foxworth has been acting like an ass since he got in good with the NFLPA, so maybe Karma came back and bit him in the ass… Oh and Raven fans trust me this guy wasn’t going to make or break your defense, well maybe break it if he did play, however you will find someone to play in dime packages. I’m sure the nickle back will be brought up and so on.

  54. Make a trade for Nnamdi, Ozzie. I’d gladly see us part with a second rounder for the leagues best cornerback.
Its a good thing the Ravens don’t face an elite QB for a while. Palmer is washed up and no body other than Stealer fans consider QB sexual assaulter elite.

  55. Judging by these comments, you would have thought Foxworth was a 1st ballot HOF’er. People are making this out to be a lot more than it really is.

  56. This is great!
…and we haven’t even gotten to Donte Stallworth’s usual pulled hamstring that keeps him out of 8 games…
…or Boldin’s usual concussion that keeps him out of 4 to 5 games…
…or Ray-Ray’s impending heart attack cuz he’s so freakin’ old…
This is shaping up to be a fabulous year for the black & gold!
Oh, and the only reason Suggs showed up to camp early this year was to make sure he got in the front of the buffet line…the fat underacheiving, overpaid turd.

  57. This is what you PFT dumb asses get for jumping into the arcane magazine business and predicting amazing things for a team months before practices even started.

bengals just added T.O., a future hall of famer who’s still got game. 850+ yards last year with a non-existent qb and hardly any supporting cast. Ced, B Scott and the best 3rd down back in the league Brian Leonard. emerging defense with one of the best coordinators in the game.

your mom goes by naveah now, she got kicked out of the club by the highway. she now works in the one down the street from the sardine cannery, which at this point is a good career move for her. apparently she got fired for pissing in the garbage cans; which was wierd, because she would do nothing but complain about how the toilet seats were too dirty, but the dj’s would have to send people back to the dressing room everytime it was her turn on the mainstage, the waitresses would invariably find her doing coke on those same toilets. odd as it was, it didn’t get her fired til the janitors cleaning up got infections on their hands, even though its cleveland and one automatically would suspect staph, these were more of a viral, sexually transmitted nature. everyone knew the custodians couldn’t get any, even if they paid, so they assumed it was from you mom squatting and pissing in the garbage cans.
anyway, say what you want about naveah, and many have, and they spoke from experience, no one who ever spent more than a few minutes alone with her, ever got the impression that she could possibly be raped. i mean she gave it away more than the plot of a tom hanks suspense flick.

  66. But on a serious note. Not drafting a corner high in the draft hurt this team. The coaching staff is going to have to be real creative this year to produce turnovers.I’ve stated that this was going to be an offensive team and will be a good one in due time. The injurys in the secondary will put more pressure on ‘Joe Cool’.At times he just looks lost out there and the decline of the defense will frustrate him more. And on another topic.I read a post saying that after the bye week the Ravens had the number 2 pass defense.Listen…when you play the Browns twice,Lions,Raiders. It tends to create an illusion that this is a good pass defense. This team played Favre,Peyton,Ben,Rivers,Rodgers,Brady and got torched!! I don’t agree with Foxworth’s statements, but no player deserves to be injured. And no team deserves to have its season disrupted by injuries. I want to beat teams because we’re better, not because they’re injured. And I can’t understand how anyone could take pleasure in Ed Reed’s problems. Losing a player of that caliber diminishes the game for everyone who loves football.

It doesnt matter how many players the Ravens lose, or even how many games they lose, they are still going to win the Super Bowl.
This absolutely defies all logic! It most certainly does matter how many games a team loses. if you lose too many, you don’t qualify for the playoffs. no playoffs, no Super Bowl. I’m glad I was able to explain that to ya, professor.

… This is the year of the Purple baby!!!!!!!
I think wrekOgnize has hit on something here – a new nickname for the Ravens – “the Purple Baby”. As in, did you see how those Purple Babies acted when they lost. The possibilities are endless. Thanks, wrekOgnize

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again- BY FAR the most concerning thing about the ravens is how much the NFL is going to rig their games.
Didn’t I call you out previously on another story about your conspiracy theories? Asked you about where theses edicts come from? Do they come from the league’s secret offices in Area 51? Are they personally delivered from the commissioner’s office to the refs via the black helicopters? Now get back to your investigation into that bogus moon landing before summer vacation is over and you have to go back to school.

I love it! Suffer KILLERS! HA!
    Go Steelers! YIPPEE!!!
    Dear Fed,
From one Steelers fan to another… SHUT UP! You make the rest of us look bad.
    Thanks,
    TK

  91. @tk1966 …
    Well said.
    @ppdoc13 …
Shouldn’t have said I disagree with his comments without knowing more about him–normally I don’t do that. I’m not happy with the way De Smith is handling this situation at all, but my sympathies are still with the players. If Foxworth’s a loyal union guy, I respect that.
What makes ACL, Achilles, and similar injuries so devastating is there’s little leeway in the recovery period, which usually means the player is gone for a year. Medical science has come far since Gayle Sayers’ time when those injuries ended careers, but a year is still a long time in the life of a professional athlete.

  92. Deb and Citizen Strange made good comments.
I think Tom Zbikowski showed that losing Ed Reed for six games is not a “massive blow”. Losing Dominique Foxworth is not a massive blow, either. Ray Lewis and the leader he introduced, Q, were both in high spirits, focused on the task. You could tell Harbs wasn’t happy. The Ravens, however, have great leadership all over both sides. They are a physical team, hungry, dynamic, humble and filled with a lot of high character guys whose faith isn’t going to waver.

  93. @ Odell: The joke was “Vivica Foxworth”. Of course we are sorry to see the man go down, but its not a big loss. Foxworth was inconsistent and played soft. He was not a shutdown corner and frequently gave up then big play. In short, the Ravens are not much worse in the secondary after his injury as before his injury. Fabian Washington, a much better cb is back. We’ll bring along the younger, bigger, more phyical talent on the depth chart and keep our eyes to the waiver wire for insurance. Remember this injury happened before training camp pads even went on. We will be a better team.

  94. I will be raping the Ratbirds defense as usual in our 2nd game. Byron will be raping them in the 1st.
    Sincerely,
    Ben

  95. Sorry the Ravens can’t be stacked at every position on the football field, but that’s the NFL. We’ll be fine. Thank You.

    ————————————————–
Please read that first line. Then read it again.
Always the class of the division? They haven’t won a playoff game in forever, rarely make the playoffs, and have a history of being one of the worst run franchises in the NFL.
That first line is the equivalent of saying “I always though Jenna Jameson was the prude of the group.”

  97. I don’t cheer injuries, that’s just wrong, even if it is the over rated Ravens. You Steeler fans are shameless, the Football gods haven’t looked too favorably on you either. Too bad for Foxworth.
Again the Ravens secondary is hurting and they failed to upgrade or add proper depth. Good luck finding it now. You have to have a secondary that can cover long enough for the pass rush to get there, even if you have the best pass rush in the NFL, which they don’t. The Ravens D will have another disappointing year. If the offense tries to air it out and not run out the clock, thier D will wear down and teams will come from behind to win time and time again.
Ravens will be lucky to win 9, Steelers will be lucky to win 8, Browns will be lucky to win. The Bengals will dominate the North again.

  98. Deb, Unfortunately, division championships do not mean much anymore!…………would you rather win 5 straight division titles or 5 straight SBs?……….nuff said!

  99. Geez – guess Boldin’s gonna have to catch about 20 TD’s for these guys to win 45-42 gms.
But hey, I luv the media for picking these Crows to win it all regardless of who gets hurt.
The purple secondary may be the weakest in the league, but hey they got Joe Flacco & he can’t lose!!

  100. Grant, for the majority of the season, the Ravens will have Tom Zbikowski, Ray Lewis’ guy Lardarius Webb, Fabian Washington, Ed Reed, Dawan Landry, Walt Harris and Ken Hamlin. You also can’t leave out that Cory Redding, Kelly Gregg, Terrence Cody, Haloti Ngata, Trevor Pryce and Terrell Suggs are rushing the passer. How could their secondary end up being the worst in the league?
    twitter.com/theqchamber

  101. I love all these Bungles fans. ITS DOMONIQUE FOXWORTH. He is a mediocre #2 cornerback that played #1. He is easily replaceable. Sorry fellow Ravens fans, I guess we can’t be fully stacked at EVERY position. Fabian Washington just returned to practice in full contact drills. Lardarius Webb will be back in 2 weeks. Chris Carr played well at the end of the season, and we still have vets such as Walt Harris and Travis Fisher. Just today, we traded QB John Beck to the Skins for CB Doug Dutch. We still have so much depth in our defense. Haloti Ngata, Kelly Gregg, Paul Kruger, Corey Redding, Trevor Pryce… yeah and that’s just the D-Line. Our linebackers include Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs(who has lost 20 pounds in the offseason and back to Pro Bowl form), Dannell Ellerbe, and Jarret freaking Johnson. We will see Bungles and Squealers fans, we will see. Oh, and you too Brownies.

  102. The Ravens are not completely up the creek.
They have a great offense with Ray Rice who can control the clock and some of the best WR in the game today.
Remember in 2004, the Pats won the super bowl with a secondary consisting of:
Rookie free agent cornerback Randall Gay, who did not play at all in the first 3 games of the season, and did not start until the 6th week
    2nd year Cornerback Asante Samuel
Safety Earthwind Moreland, who came off of the team’s practice squad and had only played in three games in his entire 5-year NFL career
wide receiver Troy Brown, and Rodney Harrison.
    So, it can be done.
but go ahead and say it, I know some one will…
all they need is a few well placed cameras. ha ha.
I’m a Pats fan and even I find that funny.
Billick is no Belichek. Good luck.
