Buddy nixes talk of releasing Schobel

Aaron Schobel may want to talk to other teams as a free agent, but the Bills won’t let him.

Following a report that said Schobel learned he would be released, Bills G.M. Buddy Nix says Schobel isn’t going anywhere for free.

“He will remain on our Reserve/Did Not Report list until he makes a
decision about what he wants to do, whether it’s retire or if he might
want to play somewhere else,” said Nix.

Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com says it’s clear the team won’t release Schobel and that the only options for the defensive end is retirement or a trade.

Schobel insists he’s not sure if he wants to play again, and will take the next two weeks to decide. It can’t help matters that he would have to potentially wait out a sticky trade process.  It’s unlikely any team will want to take on his present contract.

Still Schobel says he’s relieved the Bills made up his mind for him.

“I kept changing my mind. This makes it easier,” he said.

  1. I’ll bet you’ve been sitting on that stupid “Buddy nixes” phrase for weeks.

  2. This is awesome. This is what happens when the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NFL hire a 71 year old first time GM who is willing to work for a lifetime supply of comfortable sweaters.
Nix comes out with a statement saying they have “moved on” from Schobel, and then says he isn’t going anywhere for free.
So they are going to put him on the reserve/DNR list? Don’t they realize he can walk in the night before game 1, and they are on the hook for his money, minus whatever fines they can retroactively give for his missing camp?
    LOL, what a disaster.
As if any team in the NFL would give the Bills a box of athletic tape for a player for a player with a bad contract that the team has announced they are moving on without?
Seriously, Pirates of the NFL, George Allen wasn’t available to run your team? Oh that’s right, he’s dead. Think of how cheap you could have gotten him!

  3. If Schobel shows up, the Bills are forced to move him to the active roster or release him. Isn’t that true? Buddy’s talk seems cheap.

  4. Note:
Buddy Nix was the assistant GM in San Diego under AJ Smith for years. He has learned the lessons of not giving an inch very well. He will not bend.

I’ll bet that you are a “tool”. Do you even know who Buddy Nix is?

  6. You forgot about the third option. Pull a Favre. Sit out training camp because it sucks (especially as a linemen) then show up after someone else was given your job, and force them to release you. No way they’re paying him $8 million to sit on the bench, and it’s very unlikely anyone else will take over that contract for a 1… MAYBE 2 year guy.

That’s good, because there is nowhere for him to bend. Schobel has a contract- he can report any time he wants and get all of his money minus fines.

  8. – Buddy came unglued…..
    – Over Macho Grande?
    – No. I don’t think I’ll ever get over Macho Grande.

  9. @ realitypolice…
You know that Schobel was asked if he would show up to camp and collect….he said “no”. So what else are you wise about?

  10. ej: you took the bait you moron.
(You mean where it say Bill GM Buddy Nix right in the story you dork).
You got hooked by a Tool so what does that make you?

  11. Despite all the negative comments, this is actually a smart move by the Bills (this is coming from a Colts fan who forgot there’s even a professional team in Buffalo). The Patriots have admitted interest in Schobel should he become available, especially following Derek Burgess not reporting to camp and contemplating retirement. No way do the Bills want to lose their best pass-rushing threat only to then see him sign with the bully of the division.
I don’t think Schobel will show up at the last minute, just to cash a check. The only requirement for Schobel to collect a $2M bonus in March was to come in and pass a physical. Since he was undecided on retirement, Schobel didn’t want to take the $2m if he wasn’t 100% committed to the Bills this season.
I was worried that the senile Buddy Nix would give Schobel his walking papers, and the Patsies would have a legit pass rushing threat fall in their laps. Give Buddy a break on this one, he’s in for a long season.

  12. Thats nonsense. The Bills wont want to pay him and no other team is going to pickup his contract. Buddy is FOS.

  13. In regards to the earlier reports of the Shobel-Patriots connection, perhaps Shobel to the Patriots may not be a good fit as they already have a outside linebacker sitting on the fence about retiring or not.

Yes- and everything a player says when camp opens is always 100% true.
Dude- you’re walking around blind without a cane. If Schobel decides he wants to play, and Nix won’t trade or cut him, Schobel will call his bluff and say “OK- here I am, pay me.”
What else could he do? And why wouldn’t he? And what will Nix do when does? Pay him his money and send him home?
The Toronto Pirates would never do that.

  15. if he was going to leave, he should have done it 5 or 6 years ago when he was less injured and more valuable to a playoff caliber team. Bailing now is pointless. He earned this years money by suffering through the horrible mis-management of this teams owner and “head coaches” over his entire career. He always showed up and made plays regardless of the teams overall failure. The bills front office should pay him half of his remaining contract, release him and apologize for wasting his effort and potential!

I get it, I get it, Schobel is a saint. Money means nothing to him. But what if he decides he wants to play and Nix won’t cut or trade him, but has already said the Pirates have moved on without him? He’ll have no choice but to show up and force the Pirates to either trade him or cut him.
Maybe Bellichik can meet Nix at an early bird special at a local Toronto diner and work something out.

  17. Pats fan here. I’d love to us get Schobel. He’s crunched Tom Brady more than anybody and he’s be a big improvement over Derrick Burgess.
One of the reasons he’s thinking about retiring is the team is switching to a 3-4 defense. He’s been a 4-3 defensive end for his entire career and he’s not thrilled about having to become a 3-4 outside linebacker all of the sudden at 33 years old. The Pats run a base 3-4 but switch to 4-3 situationally. They’d find a place for him in various sub packages no doubt.
The real question is what does HE wants to do. We’ll see. If he gets released and still wants to play the Pats will be all over him.
