Broken leg for 49ers’ Eric Heitmann

The 49ers just got some bad news about their starting center.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports that center Eric Heitmann broke his left fibula during this morning’s practice.

According to Barrows, the 49ers now need to see if there’s any ankle damage in addition to the broken bone. The best case scenario is no ligament damage, in which case the broken bone would force Heitmann to miss six to eight weeks, which would mean he’d only miss a couple games at the start of the regular season.

The 30-year-old Heitmann has started all 16 games for the 49ers in each of the last three seasons. The last time he missed a game was in 2006, when he broke his left tibia and missed the last two games of the season.

David Baas and Tony Wragge will compete for the starting center job while Heitmann is out.
