Roethlisberger continues to get kudos for strong camp

Corey Rawson’s favorite son may have thin skin, but Ben Roethlisberger has shaken off a humiliating offseason with a strong month of August.

“Ben Roethlisberger has had the best first two weeks of training camp in his career, which makes the first four weeks of the Steelers’ regular season that much more important,” writes Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. (Bouchette is not a writer prone to throwing out unearned praise.)

We still don’t know who will start Pittsburgh’s preseason opener, but logic would indicate that Byron Leftwich would get as much work as possible this month. Leftwich is reportedly struggling with a minor thumb problem, but it shouldn’t prevent him from suiting up.

Meanwhile, the Steelers have to be cautiously optimistic that the Roethlisberger who returns to the team in October will be an improved version of an already-effective quarterback.
