AFC South training camp one-liners

RB Jeremiah Johnson was fifth on the Texans depth chart but Ben Tate’s injury and a strong preseason game have him moving up the ladder.

Rookie Texans KR Trindon Holliday had one nice kickoff return but his work on punt returns wasn’t as impressive.

Said Texans coach Gary Kubiak of RB Steve Slaton fumbling on Saturday night, “It’s something that’s got to be corrected for us to be successful.
Steve knows that. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do in practice to
tighten him up and hang onto the football because he did some good
things as a player last night and obviously had to end his night with
that one.”

The starting Texans defense turned in a strong effort against the Cardinals on Saturday night.

Colts backup QB Curtis Painter didn’t do much to inspire confidence with three interceptions and a lost fumble in Sunday’s loss to the 49ers.

The Colts had no problems with their starting offense or defense, however.

Colts G Kyle DeVan had to leave Sunday’s game after suffering a hamstring injury.

Colts rookie LB Pat Angerer had two sacks in three snaps during the second quarter.

Jaguars WR Jarrett Dillard was cleared to return to practice on Sunday after missing two weeks of camp with a toe injury.

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was happy to see the Jaguars offense in position to make several big plays against the Eagles.

Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union cautions against drawing any conclusions about Jaguars QB David Garrard based on one preseason game.

Injuries to tackles Eben Britton and Eugene Monroe are cause for worry if the Jaguars can’t get them back on the field soon.

The Titans will play QB Kerry Collins in their next preseason game and still consider him their backup quarterback.

Titans QB Vince Young’s reluctance to run with the ball led to a mistake during Saturday’s loss to the Seahawks.       

Titans coach Jeff Fisher said there isn’t an exact timetable for the return of CB Cortland Finnegan from hip and groin injuries.

Defensive linemen Raheem Brock and Chris Harrington got extensive playing time Saturday even though they had only one practice with the Titans.
