Rex Ryan says Dungy "unfairly judged me"

Tony Dungy and Rex Ryan both get their fair share of attention and criticism when they speak their mind, so perhaps it shouldn’t be so surprising that Dungy’s comments on Ryan’s love of the “F”-bomb created such an uproar.

Ryan weighed in on the issue Wednesday morning, only after his father, among others, had their say.

Ryan said that Dungy “unfairly judged” him and those on the scene said Ryan was emotional about it and seemingly hurt.

“I’m a good person,” Ryan said.

He said he a lot of respect for Dungy, and left a message for the former Colts coach inviting him to camp to meet the “real” Ryan.   You can argue with Ryan’s methods, but it’s hard to make the case that he’s phony or somehow not “real.”

In that respect, Ryan and Dungy have a lot in common.

  1. Glad that you know the guy so well after watching a couple episodes of a reality show. Maybe you should practice some psychology on him you are so deep in his head.

  2. A christian who judges other people and tries to impose their own moral views on others?
Wow, don’t see that very often.

  3. I agree with Rex. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dungy but his “conscience of the NFL” routine is getting old.
The whole Vick reinstatement saga played out as if Moses himself had bestowed his approval on “Michael”. Its also painful to watch the guy on TV as well. He needs to get back into coaching or something. Ryan shouldn’t have been so open with it around the cameras but a whole lot of people I do business with talk the same way.

  4. Is he going to cus him out our cry??
Dungy is a right winger and i think Rexy is a lefty.
These two are not made of the same
(but both good guy and good coaches!)

“He said he a lot of respect” missing the ‘has’
not being a D bag just pointing it out..also great point on Rex…i can’t believe i’m saying this but I really like his style…he’s..real..I’m used to being lied to..idk if i can handle this!

  6. Did he cry again… this clown is not fit (pun intended) to be a head coach. He is an embarrassment to any team, even one as low as the jets.
He wasn’t “judged unfairly.” He simply is the low class toad he seems to be.
He’s not the answer as you’ll see soon enough.

  7. enough already!!!…Rex Ryan..just focus on football will ya? I am a Pats fan..so I am glad to see this in a way. Look at how “Belicheat” works. Keeps his mouth shut…goes about his business..and isnt in some way auditioning for Survivor..or The Biggest Loser. All they have to show for it is 3 SBs. Go ahead haters…bring up the cheat thing. We all know only the Pats did it right? Dopes.
Cant wait to see the Jets completely flop this year.

  8. Rex is a blowhard and a buffoon, but at least he doesn’t go around as the self-appointed moral authority of the NFL preaching to everyone else how to live their life.

  9. Jesus-boy strikes again.
I bet Jesus used profanity all the damn time. After all, their world view consisted of subsistence farming and herding, without any knowledge of earthquakes, microbiology or cosmology. If he felt a quake back then, how could he not have yelled, ‘WTF!?!?’

  10. Really??? Super-christians like Dungy are usually the phoniest people out there! I’d wager that Rex has fewer skeletons in his closet than Dungy…..

  11. I think it’s interesting Ryan cares so much about what Dungy thinks. It kind of reveals a false bravado with Ryan, and that he’s really a little insecure.

  12. I don’t think Rex Ryan would hire Tony Dungheap as a coach on his staff, either. Dungy got a lot of ‘Rooney Rule’ help and support in his career. It was not politically correct to critique Dungy for being ‘dumb’ as a coach, but he was in many instances. Nice guys do finish last in the NFL, but he was lucky to have Manning to bail him out of many of his errors.

F*ck Tony Dungy. He was a career choke artist who would be this generation’s Jack Pardee if not for Peyton Manning. I can’t stand his hollier than thou crap over the last few years. Hey Tony, maybe if you were more worried about being a good father than Rex Ryan’s mouth, your son would still be around!

  17. Tony Dungy has the right to his opinion. Personally I like Rex Ryan for getting so much attention brought to the Jets. He has to battle for press time with the Giants so he has to be a little more over the top than most.

    I would take that bet.

  19. Management by chaos, unfairly judged!
Rex, do you really care what Dungy said?
Now you have something in common with BB, Dungy didn’t like him either. Are you bipolar or something??? One minute your bragging and the next minute your apologizing?
Whatever your style is, be true to it and don’t worry who likes or dislikes you! One thing I know for sure, you can’t be thin skinned in your line of work. Half will like you and the other half won’t, stop your whinning. So Dungy wouldn’t hire you, so what? Woody Johnson did. Maybe you should worry about what he thinks? You and LT are going to be interesting to watch this year!

  20. I think some of the “Tony Dungy is a great guy” talk has gone to his head a bit, to a point where he thinks he has moral authority to call out other coaches or players.
By the way, speaking of – how does he stand by and visibly support Michael Vick, but belittle and criticize Rex Ryan???

  21. Nothing like a distracted Head Coach.
I’m glad belichick doesn’t spend 1 milli-second worrying about what other coaches think.
    jets=over-exposed=distracted=9-7

  22. Again, who gives a damn what Tony Dungy thinks? Who died and made him the all mighty one? If Ryan was black and beat his wife around Dungy would be the one taking his side and “rehabilitating” him. It’s football, if you didn’t wish to curse in front of your players that is fine, but I guarantee just about every coach in the league use curse words around their players. They are grown men, not pop warner players.

How do you come up with that, Dungy was asked a question and answered it and by sticking to his own morals you claim he’s pushing his views on others………..if you don’t want his views don’t ask the man his opinion.

  26. Ryan is too much of a retard to realize Dungy doesn’t think the F-bomb is appropriate regardless of emotion. That was is whole point. This dumb ass would probably be working in a meat locker if it wasn’t for football.

  27. Rex is quickly becoming my favorite NFL coach. I’d love to have this guy coaching the Bears! He’s vocal, he’s real, he’s in your face and he’s got balls.

  28. Dungy reminds me of Bing Crosby. The whole world loved him & he came across as a saint. Meanwhile he was tormenting & abusing his own family. Calling them worthless etc. Dungy needs to worry about why his child killed himself instead of why Rex Ryan swears too much. Typical bible thumper judging everyone & everything while preaching don’t judge. If Ryan were black he would just be misunderstood right Tony.
Guy looks like a character from the movie ANTZ

  29. And how could anybody be so heartless to even use the unfortunate suicide of Dungy’s son as evidence of him being a bad father?
What is the point for posts being reviewed if people can say the most awful things they can think of?

    A) You’re not a person, you’re a blob.
    B) You act like a big tuff guy but you’re scared of Tony Dungy.

Exactly how did he judge or impose his morals on anyone. He was asked a question, and he answered.
    _________________
“I’m disappointed with all the profanity,” Dungy said. “I think Rex can make his points without all that.”
Asked if he would hire a coach who talks the way Ryan does, Dungy answered, “I would not. I personally don’t want my players to be around that. I don’t want to be around that. . . . It’s hard for me to be around that, and if I were in charge, no, I wouldn’t hire someone like that. Now, I’ve been around ‘F’ bombs, so it’s not like it’s new. I just don’t think that has to be part of your every-minute, everyday vocabulary to get your point across.”
Dungy thinks NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would be wise to give Ryan a call and ask him to think about how he’s representing the NFL.
“I would hope that he does,” Dungy said of the possibility of Goodell getting involved. “I don’t know that he will or not but I hope that he does because I just don’t think the league needs that. I don’t think our young people need to hear that that’s what’s done to be successful. Because it doesn’t have to be that way.”
    ….ok?

  33. Dungy judged Rex on his own words and interviews…..is Rex now saying that he didn’t say what he said, or doesn’t use the language that he uses?????? Rex is as crazy as his ole’ man and it’s further proof that the “apple didn’t fall far from the tree”

  34. rex is da man!!! i wish dungy wld just shut the fck up sometimes. oh and i also wish the republicans wld get off this site and just be happy watchn fox news.

  35. Deadeye, I like the star wars references!
but hey really hasn’t everyone beaten the hell out of this non-topic, non-story ???
games are for real Sept. 9th and it can’t get here soon enough…

  36. This reminds me of Eddie Murphy and Bill Cosby back in the 80s. Richard Pryor had this advice for Eddie Murphy which I think applies to Rex Ryan:
Tell Bill Cosby (Dungy) to have a Coke and a Smile and to shut the f**k up. 🙂

  37. DUNGY is riding his wave of love, good for him. But I was glad to see him LEAVE Tampa. I was Glad he won a superbowl by standing on the sidelines and letting Payton run the offence.
He is a good coordiator by Monty Kiffin was better.
Nothing but respect to Dungy but I could care less about his opinions.

  38. this whole thing is stupid, I don’t think rex is a bad person, I think he’s got swagger, believes in his team, and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. the fact that he swears so much only helps him assimilate into NY better, as most people in NYC drop the F bomb routinely.
further, who the hell cares about dungy anyway, hes not an NFL coach, he left the league, his opinion doesn’t mean anything to anybody. two different coaching styles, two different teams. at least ryan can coach his team to the playoffs without peyton manning leading the way. dungy will never/can’t be considered one of those elite coaches like Parcells, Belichick, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, etc… , the success that Indy had will always be deemed as Peytons success, because lets face it, without Peyton Manning, there wouldn’t be a super bowl ring on Dungy’s finger. if NY plays well, there is no sure-fire future HOF’er that anybody can attribute all Ryan’s success to. Whatever they accomplish, its because he’s a defensive genius and gets the right pieces for his schemes. I’m not saying he’s on the same level as the NFL all time elite coaches, but I’d call him a better coach than Dungy if Rex goes ahead and wins a Super Bowl. I already think he puts together a better defense.

  39. “Tony,
I want you to look in the damn mirror and say I am no better than Fatty 20 times and call me in the morning.”
@JMoney, why would he call you, I thought he had a direct line to god ?
“Dungy is a great man who would help anyone, as long as they are African-American and not gay”
@Rick, fixed your statement for you.

  40. A true friend is someone who will help you get better by telling you the hard truth. I’m willing to bet that Ryan doesn’t have many people in his life who will tell him he could handle himself better. Ryan will take Dungey’s words and do something with himself, or ryan will hold a grudge towards Dungey.

August 17, 2010 8:25 AM:I’d say Rex Ryan is still learning the Hard Knocks of reality, that effing fakes pretending effing toughness don’t win effing Super Bowls, regular season or exhibition games.

I also hope Ryan eventually learns fbombs don’t define men as much as they define fear, specifically his.

  42. Being religious allows you to judge others immediately.
Funny cuz if Rex Ryan were to call Dungy a poor father he would be crucified in the media.
Dungy is boring and his bible-thumping has no place in todays street culture NFL.
Love ya Rex, keep bein you. Let the haters hate. Dungy is only pissed because you have every player hanging on every word and he couldn’t even get his own son to hear him out.
Had Dungy dropped a couple ‘F-bombs’ maybe his son would’ve paid more attention and not selfishly killed himself.
Sad but true but if you aren’t speaking their language you have no chance of being heard.

  43. The country is full of fake, plastic type people that stand for little. These type seem to always want to shove their nose up others (*& and try and tell them how they should live.
And then you have people like the Ryans, real people that mean what they say and say what they mean. What you see is what you get and they tend to live and let live.
The countrty use to have more like Ryan, today we have more of the other type and take a good look around, it is sad, take a good look at the country. Hell they made Paris Hilton a Star lol.

  44. You can argue with Ryan’s methods, but it’s hard to make the case that he’s phony or somehow not “real.”

WOW, you don’t “see that very often.”

  46. How did Dungy unfairly judge him? All he said was that he didn’t like his use of profanity. Did Ryan not use profanity? My understanding was that it was broadcast on HBO when he did. What was unfair about what Dungy said?

  47. I cant stand when people say crap like this…”he JUDGED me….” Whatever Rex, he didnt “judge” you, he just stated his opinion. If your gonna put your life on Television for the world to see, everyone going to “judge” you. Seems like Rex maybe all talk and no security.

  48. Why outrage over language and no outrage over real offenses?
Rex curses, he gets hammered by Dungy.
Vick kills dogs, Dungy champions his cause.
Same thing with the Pat Tillman documentary – given an R rating because Pat’s quotes (inclusive of last words) include the f-word.

    rusH1023,
Dungy didn’t mention Jesus. Your upset that Dungy doesn’t like profanity? Indeed, how terrible to not like profanity. He’s way out of line. (That’s sarcasm.)

  51. Swearing isn’t that big of a deal. I hate how everything has to be so black and white with the media, especially in sports. You can still be a good person even if you aren’t perfect.
Most of the people in this league that have that perfect person image are those who have been fortunate to not have anything come up and drug around through the dirt.
Dungy is pretty close to perfect in that sense. But you look how his son turned out and I guarantee Tony would have spent more time with that young man instead of his career if he could turn back time. We all have our baggage. Our flaws.

Wow, these have to be three of the most ignorant comments I have ever seen posted here at this site and that’s saying something considering all the mindrot atheists and trashbag liberals I’ve had the misfortune of reading!
1.) Dungy is only “boring” to you because he isn’t an ignorant thug spitting dope lyrics on some rap track through a set of fake gold teeth. Bible-thumping is a hallmark of the NFL as teams gather for prayer before and after games to pray together. Typically, the “bible-thumpers” are the LEADERS in the locker room. Godless street thugs make terrible leaders, but that wouldn’t be obvious to one such as yourself.
2.) So you contend that Tony Dungy lost his son because he didn’t cuss around him!? LOL! Are you bloody kidding me!? Okay, all you Dads out there, the children of this generation are so ignorant that they demand that you use filthy street language in the house or they will up and kill themselves! IDIOT!!!
3.) So as a stupid and decadent teenage culture continues to become more ugly and carnal, we as parents must descend with our youth into the same foolishness or else our children will not listen to us? Really? You’d go this route rather than love them enough to hold them to a higher standard? You, sir, are a disgraceful clown but typical of what the world produces these days.

  55. Maybe Phony Tony should pay closer attention to his own family instead of commenting on everyone else.
Only in America could someone whose son blew his brains out be held up as “Super Mentor” and treated like a hero.

  56. Way off on the last statement “In that respect, Ryan and Dungy have a lot in common”, Florio. In fact, I do think that Dungy is NOT real and is a big phony. I don’t understand all this Dungy worship. But he seems to pull the wool over the media’s eyes really well and everyone loves him, ignoring, among other facts, that he is a known religious zealot and bigot.
Rex Ryan may be a blowhard (I am not a Jets fan), but he does seem real.

  57. Tell me something. If Dungy was still coaching and he needed a defensive coordinator and Rex was available. Rex having coached many top level defenses in his career and Dungy refuses to hire him because he curses too much. Tell me how badly would he get killed in the media and among the fans of said team for not hiring the best guy out there because of his foul language?
Its the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Its the most violent sport in the world and you have a guy who doesn’t like a coach because he said the “F-word” too much? How lucky is this guy that he had Peyton Manning as his QB?

  58. Rex was a little over the top, but he’s still a good coach. Dungey needs to keep his mouth shut. He can sit back and support a criminal, and say he is just misunderstood. Hmmm, could it be because the dog killer is black? Hmmm, he supports all these troubled black football players, but let a white coach drop the F bomb and the Commissioner needs to have a talk with him.

  61. @snnyjcbs
i agree. everyone is careful not to ‘hurt the brand’ as in less money for those honest, hard working folks who would never lie or shortchange you or put your life @ risk for the sake of profit.
shame Ryan is the coach of the Jets, otherwise I’d wish him success..we need more like him and I think we will..I can already see more and more players speaking out, trash talking, this is good for the game…what was so fun about high school & college football?
The battle between the lines, the lead up where everyone thumbs their chest..hey, football is a game of emotions, more so than any other sport because here you can channel your emotions and use it as a weapon of choice.
Rex Ryan will drag the football world into the 21st century..no more men in suits pretending to be something they are not…show me a fat, overweight, foul mouthed defensive genius any day of the week over the clean cut corporate schill.

  62. Dungy needs to realize that Rex was playing it up for the cameras. I’m sure the producers of the show were egging him on. The producers massaged his ego and pushed him to “man it up” even more then usual.
Get over it or change the channel.

  63. Yes, well Rex, you don’t seem to understand. Everything Tony Dungy does is RIGHT. You see Rex, we are all to be judged by Tony, for he is the ultimate in compassion and intelligence.

  65. maybe dungy can kill himself….his kids were soooo interested in what their dad had to say…why would rex care ??? dungy is probably another “christian” whose nuts are sore from from them banging on a little boys butt.

  66. Ryan is a big mouth. Big deal. He is good for football and for guys like me who write into this site to rag on him and his team. It is all in fun. The high moral people may not enjoy his act but fans are watching, so HBO loves it. Coach Ryan wants to win and to have the players ready for football. Thats his job and the method is up to him. With that said I hope the R-A-T-S crash and burn. Have a nice day.

  67. Rex Ryan curses when he speaks. Dungy doesnt. Its a matter of choice, Dungy should mind his business. Most grown men I know curse when they speak. whats the big deal? Its a football camp, not a job interview. Plus the show is on HBO and not basic television. I dont see what the problem is here at all. If I were Ryan I wouldnt have even responded to his comments.
Ive never been a fan of Dungy and his routine. Mind your own business and worry about brushing up on your TV skills, since you suck as an analyst.

  68. Lies of the week
Rex Ryan is a warm sensitive gentle human being.
Brett Favre is unselfish, publicity-shy, decisive, believes there is no “I” in team and has no interest in money.
Tim Tebow is fascinating, skillful and has no interest in personal publicity

  69. The Ravens didn’t sign Ryan as the head coach because the guy has a lack of class, not because of skill. Baltimore has been trying to improve it’s image and Rex didn’t help.

  70. The immaturity of many of the posts above aside, here’s my take…there was nothing wrong with what Dungy said. Listening to the entire conversation between Dan Patrick and Tony Dungy, there was no “judgment” of Rex Ryan, so if he believes he was judged by Dungy, he’s highly mistaken. There was no judgment of Rex as a person, there was a judgment of his actions. It’s not necessary for Rex to get his point across by utilizing a cuss word every 10 seconds. I also have no problem with Dungy saying he wouldn’t hire him. This isn’t a family we’re talking about, where you’re stuck with them, whether you like it or not. This is a situation where you want people who you can comfortably work with. In this situation, Tony wouldn’t be comfortable working with Rex, because they are far too different.

  71. I would’nt put too much stick in what Dungy has to say. He does’nt like Ryan because of his language, but yet he has Vicks back. Which is worse a person who uses course language or a convicted felon. I rest my case.

  72. When it comes to football management, Rex is following in Buddy’s footsteps where a lot of hot air sells tickets but accomplishes little in the post season.
A big ego only goes so far – Rex Ryan’s motto is that “There is no “me” in “team”…
… with the exception of the “m” and the “e”

  73. When Dungy claims that Mike vick is a good person that makes him a liar, and not a good Christian.
Dungy is like so many black activist he loves attention.

  74. Wow, the Tony bashers on here need to stand down a little. I cannot believe such a well intentioned man is getting some of the vile thrown his way when he simply made some very uncontroversial comments about a controversial coach in Rex.
Rex’s approach is a magnet for this. He has called out numerous teams, players, and other coaches on many occasions. Tony made a very mild remark and media outlets spun it into something bigger further fueling Rex’s unending fire.

  75. Dungy doesn’t like a man who curses, but he sticks his neck out for a dog murderer. Since when was electrocuting and hanging dogs after making them fight near to death not as bad as cursing? Keep your opinions to yourself Dungy!

  76. “You can argue with Ryan’s methods, but it’s hard to make the case that he’s phony or somehow not “real.”
In that respect, Ryan and Dungy have a lot in common.”
Nope… I would say Dungy is a great big phony

  77. F- that AssClown Dungy. Cant wait to see him take Jeremy Green under his wing next.
Dungy is as good a Christian as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright is.

  78. To all the dorks talking about Dungy “judging” Ryan, you are completely wrong. He is not judging him, he is pointing out that Ryan cusses too much. I bet not one of you accusing Dungy even goes to church or reads the Bible,

And how could anybody be so heartless to even use the unfortunate suicide of Dungy’s son as evidence of him being a bad father?
What is the point for posts being reviewed if people can say the most awful things they can think of?
    Grow up.
    ——————————————–
The same way Dungy uses Ryan’s swearing as evidence of him being un-hireable…
…especially when Dungy comes out in support of a convicted felon who murdered ‘God’s helpless creatures’…
…especially when this convicted felon was also guilty of running an interstate gambling ring…
…especially when the same people this convicted felon runs with shoots people who would have testified against him…
…after all, he is just offering his opinion on Dungy’s parenting skills.
I think you need to grow up.

  80. Whats funny is that all the fins fans has something to say about Rex . But their main man the FAT TUNA used the words one after another and noless a lot worse in front of kids and I heard it first hand so stay classless fin no place to talk. And im not a Jets fan

A christian who judges other people and tries to impose their own moral views on others?
Wow, don’t see that very often.
    ____________________ ______________
An Atheist (no moral standard, so he can attack everyone else with impunity since he himself has nothing to live up to) attacks a Christian who did NOT judge someone (he judged the actions, (using profanity excessively) – not once did he say anything about Rex being a bad guy or anything like it) and spins him into being a hypocrite so he can continue to dismiss the religion.
WOW, you don’t “see that very often.”

    Hahahahahahahaha
Another Christian who thinks they are superior because of their ‘morals’…yes, you and Sarah Palin. Nice, how you lump all ‘atheists’ into a group without morals, yet all Christians as having them.
How do the Christian priests assuage their guilty morals when they force themselves on the little boys and girls…then run away to other countries while the church covers it up?
    Typical.

  82. Not that I care much for Ryan, but he’s right.
Who does this d*ckhead Dungy think he is?
Dungyazz should realize by now that there is already a pussied up version of football. It’s called soccer.

Really??? Super-christians like Dungy are usually the phoniest people out there! I’d wager that Rex has fewer skeletons in his closet than Dungy…..

  84. Tony is entitled to an opinion, but where he crossed the line was asking Rodger Godell to get involved. Good god man the commisioner has a slew of rapists, dog murderers, druggies, and cheaters, to worry about. Swearing, really Tony?
I bet you would hire Ron Mexico, but you wouln’t hire old Rex? Hmmm……….
Got a question for you then Tonyier then thou.
    Who would Jesus hire?

  85. Anyone who would stick his neck out for a piece of crap like Mike Vick, has no room to question the motives, or actions, of others.

  86. Tony Sanctimony should just go away and stop pretending he’s so righteous and virtuous. He’s always putting himself on a pedestal way up there in the moral high ground. The most sanctimonious twit in the world.

Boy if the above isn’t a paradox, I don’t know what is. 🙂 I think TrueFan just reinforced the original author’s point.
I wonder if this drivel ever gets in front of other coaches around the league. I wonder what they think…

  88. The Rev. Tony Dungy has spoken.
I am not a Rex Ryan fan by any means, but who died and made Dungy the Pope of the NFL?
Actually, Dungy might make a better Pope than was a coach. Jon Gruden and Jim Caldwell have taught us all a great lesson: Dungy was overrated as an NFL coach.
Rex is, too, by the way.
