Former Jags player wants Byron Leftwich to "shut up"

Earlier this week, current Steelers presumed interim starter and former Jaguars starter Byron Leftwich said the team that acquired him in the first round of the 2003 “really f–ked up that situation” by getting rid of Leftwich and other key players.

Now, one of the original Jaguars has responded.

Linebacker Tom McManus, who played for the team from 1995 through 1999 and now hosts a morning-drive radio show on the Jacksonville FOX Sports Radio affiliate, contacted us via e-mail with a message for Leftwich.

“Please tell Byron Leftwich to shut his mouth,” McManus said.  “That guy lives in fantasy land.
The reality?  He was average at best, Mike.  I don’t care about stats.   If you
watched him week to week while he was the starter here in town, like I did, he
would make you pull your hair out.”

The stats confirm the notion that Leftwich was average; he has a career passer rating of 79.6.

“He was tough, could take a hit, but he would
disappoint you more than not,” McManus said.  “For example, his 15-yard out throw would never be
consistent.  He would throw it 10 yards over the receiver’s head or five yards on
the ground in front of the target.  His five-yard slant?  Back hip, too high, you
never knew.  The touch pass?  Ha.  The dude didn’t have any touch.  Had some good
games, made some great throws, but overall, he wasn’t accurate at all.  That’s
why Shack [Harris] drafted these big target receivers so he could make it easier for Byron,
which didn’t help.

“Like a lot of young guys, Byron needs to look in the mirror,” McManus added.  “He never changed his mechanics, even after they tried to early in his career, to
make himself better.  He thought he was way better than he was.  Showing up on
the red carpet at the Kentucky Derby, with shades on nonetheless, that’s
laughable.  Only big time athletes/celebrities are supposed to do that, something
Byron was not even close too.

“Look, I wasn’t a marquee player, by any means.  I stuffed the run and ran down
on kickoffs.  But, I know football as well as anyone else.  And Byron Leftwich
was an average quarterback, who didn’t deserve any kind of ‘big-time player’ recognition,
because he simply wasn’t. You know what he was?  The beginning to the end of
Shack Harris’ tenure as GM of the Jags, being the first bad pick of that era.

“Guys like him need to wake up.  Maybe we should call it the ‘entitlement era,’
an era where young people think they’re better than they actually are.  As my
late father would say to me, ‘Don’t act like a big shot when you are not one,’ and
Byron Leftwich was anything but.  Pittsburgh can have him.”

Pittsburgh currently has him, and despite Leftwich’s desire to stay we’re still not sure it’s in Pittsburgh’s best interest to keep him.

  1. I am known as Canada’s Biggest Steeler fan and my take on Leftwich is identical to McManus’.
He failed to point to that ridiculus windup he has prior to the throw.
He is a pretty good back up for us but I am paniced about the first 4 games with his wild arm.
and yes…….He should shut his mediocre at best mouth!

  2. Not a Jags fan but I think McManus is being generous when he calls Leftwich average at best. The dude couldn’t throw, couldn’t run and most importantly couldn’t “think”…..Leftwich didn’t have “it” in the upstairs department.

  3. Yup, it is really easy to tear apart another players stats from the sidelines. Tom McManus??? Come on, the title should have read “Former Jags Bench Warmer Wants Byron Leftwich to Shut up.”
I am sure Tom McManus was NOT one of the ones that he wishes the Jags would have kept lol.
Hey Tom, SHUT UP, douchebag… Find another way to promote your show!

  4. Would love to hear McManus’ opinion on Garrard.
Is he the beginning to the end of the Jack Del Rio tenure as Head Coach of the Jags?

  5. McManus nailed it! If Leftwich was so good, how come he has become the perennial backup QB? The dude needs to ahut his pie hole. The Jaguars made that guy very rich, and he didn’t earn what they paid him.

  6. Amen to that. I’ve never understood how ANYONE could have thought that Leftwich was anything other than a glorified backup who happened to be a starter. He was awful from the start, and he’s even worse now. Went to the Bucs-Giants game in Tampa in ’09, and he never looked worse. Calling him a noodle arm is an insult to noodles
The Squealers are wasting their time with that clown

Technically, no one is supposed to act like that; it’s just that big time athletes/celebrities are the only ones douchebaggy enough to try.

  8. not that i disagree with TM buthe hardly seems like a person who should call anybody else out. just saying

  9. Tom McManus? You mean of the “I wasn’t even good enough to be a starter on an expansion team” McManuses? You mean the guy that when the opposing QB threw a 15-yard out, you didn’t know if he was going to miss the tackle 5 yards up field or 10 yards down field? That Tom McManus?
I think that some of the people in Jacksonville need to take a LONG look at the franchise before they go off and dismiss what Leftwich said. They DID screw up the franchise and they could have been much better but they let their talent go and they’ve gone 31-34 the last 4 years with Garrard (26-28 with him in the lineup and 5-6 without him).
The franchise put their best days behind them in 1999 when they made the playoffs for their 4th straight year (out of 5) and have only made them playoffs twice since then. It’s hard to believe that they canned Coughlin after 8 years, a winning record (68-60) and two trips to the AFC championship (8-4 playoff record) and yet, Del Rio is back for an 8th year after 7 years and a 12-20 record for the past 2 years (57-55, overall).

Hey Jaydub, but you missed the game the week before that he threw for 300 yds and 3 TDs (yes he had 2 ints too) and the one right before that where he threw for 275 yds and a td… The Bucs gave up way too early on him.
The Steelers will be just fine with him for 4 games.

  11. Who is Tom McManus? A former special teamer and a freakin radio show host. Nice resume douchebag. I’d rather rock the drive-thru headset at Mickey-D’s.

  12. I thank the Football Gods every day that the Jagoffs “stole” Leftwich in the draft ahead of the Ravens, who had to “settle” for Terrell Suggs. LMAO! Thanks Jville and good luck Crappsburgh!

  14. Yeah, Byron THOUGHT he was GREATER than his stats. I saw him on the NFL network acting like he was a top tier quarterback. ALL EGO. Sad. Egotisticalism work when you ARE the Shit!
    Byron is a clown.

    *************************
Perennial backup? He’s been with 4 teams and he entered the season as the designated starter for 2 of them (Jax and TB). Jax didn’t release him until just before the start of the regular season and by then Joey Harrington was the starter for the Falcons and he was there to back him up.
Frankly, HIS biggest problem and one reason why some teams will shy away from him is the fact that he’s a statue (Which is funny because his sack % with Jax was better than Brunell or Garrard). He’s high maintenance because he needs a really good OL and there aren’t many teams that have that AND an open spot for a starter.

  17. Okay.. so a “never was” calls out a “has been”.. Geeez.. Leftwich is starting the first four games for the Steelers.. and McManus is shooting his mouth off in the what.. 33rd radio market in Jacksonville? And this is news??

  18. If you Pittsburgh idiots read the article Tom admits to not being a marquis player….then again you’re the same douchebags that will cheer for scum of the earth Rothlisbonehead!!!

  19. I used to like lefty but then found out about his ego . He sucks and I love dixon . I love leftwich getting put in his place too

  20. This is posted as news because an email from a wash out player now posing as a radio personality is as close as Florio ever gets to , you know, an actual interview. Leftwich himself won’t waste his time responding to Florio.

  21. @edgy1957…He was designated starter for two teams, and both times he lost his job and became the “backup.” It took three years in Jville, and only three games in Tampa.
Write it down. Before Ben gets back, Leftwich will loose the job to Dixon.
Perennial backup is an accurate assessment.

How ironic you used the words “jagoff” and “crapsburgh” being that the word jagoff is pittsburgh slang, idiot.
McManus the special teamer has a point with Byron’s delivery and being average, but it’s not like the Jags took a step up with Garrard lol. I’m sure Leftwich felt he was lied to on the way out of Jacksonville and hence he has bitter feelings.

  25. The best part? The Jags rushed to the podium to take Leftwich at No. 7 when the Vikings and Ravens trade got screwed up. Then the Panthers take Jordan Gross, and the Vikings end up with probably the best defensive tackle of his era, Kevin Williams.

  26. A career QB rating of 79.6 is not “average,” it’s below average. But “below average” is not an accurate way to describe Byron Leftwich. “Far below average,” or “he sucks” is more on point…

  27. @edgy
Umm What are you talking about?? Couglin wasn’t there when Leftwich was, so I doubt Leftwich was talking about him? Thy went through Salary Cap hell after they made the playoffs. The reason Del Rio is still there is becasue they ditched Leftwich and Garrard got them to the playoffs. Who did they get rid of that was good? Fred Taylor MIGHT make the Pats roster, Leftwich MIGHT be a 2nd stringer, probably a third stringer, Peterson is on his last wind. Getting younger is not a bad thing. Maybe do a history lesson yourself. It could be worse, we could have a rapist as a QB.

  28. Meatball13:
Are you “The Marquis de Meatball?”
You just called the fans of a “marquee” team in the NFL idiots, even though you don’t have the capacity to even use the correct version of the word itself.
It’s funny because you are, “eyeronically,” less literate than many of the people you hate so badly.

    *****************
Del Rio was a moron to jettison Leftwich. Seriously, do you honestly believe that he WON the job that year? He went 4-1 with the one loss against the ONLY winning team that they played, Indy (14-2) and beat Cleveland (6-10), SF (4-12), Houston (2-14) and Tennessee (4-12). Leftwich had NO chance of keeping his job and he would have had to have hit 90% of his passes and thrown no interceptions that preseason to do so. There was no pretense, as they not only didn’t play him the last game but they waited until the next day before they even released him. Keeping him until the last moment, didn’t allow any teams the time to consider him as a starter going into the season.
Tampa was a no win situation. NOTHING short of a Super Bowl was going to keep him in the starting lineup because they had Freeman in their sights as a starter that season. It was just a matter of when not if but he still entered the season as the starter.
I’m NOT saying that he won’t lose the job to Dixon because I don’t think that he’s going to be able to survive the OL, which is made for running like the Cowboys. Hell, even IF Dixon were to beat him out, he’s headed for the sidelines, as well.

  30. Yeah, Leftwich was average with his 80 QB rating.
Much like Eli Manning and his career 79.2 QB rating, Matt Ryan and his 80.9, Jay Cuntler and his 83.8, and Joe Flacco and his 84.9, yet people try to act like those guys are good or even elite QB’s.
You can be a playoff team with an average QB if you have the team around you.

  31. I agree 100 with that guy whoever he is, I think the best move for the Steelers is getting Dixon to start give him some key starts in his young career that’s what he needs, most people don’t think the Steelers will make the playoffs so why not start him he is more accurate more mobile and a he’ll of an athlete, he impressed
e last year against one of the leagues best defenses if not the best in Baltimore Ravens.

  32. “For example, his 15-yard out throw would never be consistent. He would throw it 10 yards over the receiver’s head or five yards on the ground in front of the target. His five-yard slant? Back hip, too high, you never knew. The touch pass? Ha. The dude didn’t have any touch. “
That’s a lotta QB critiquing for an undrafted LB out of BC touting 76 tackles over 48 games.
Wonder how he feels about deez guys, including currently worse-or-equal-to-Leftwich starters like Matt Cassell, Eli Manning, Kyle Orton, Alex Smith, Matt Leinart.

  33. To those bashing Tom McManus for saying what he said, who cares if Tom McManus was a star player or bench warmer. The truth is, Leftwich was a bust and is not worth talking about. Anyone who thinks that Jags were dumb to let him go, are either dumb themselves or family members.

I didn’t SAY that he was. I said that I can’t believe that Del Rio STILL has a job after 7 years when he’s clearly not done as good a job as Coughlin did and he was fired after 8 seasons and 4 playoff appearances, so what are YOU talking about.
Leftwich was the starter for 3 years and made the playoffs once and they were in the hunt the previous season. Garrard has been the starter for 4 and has made the playoffs once and he melted down the stretch when they could have made the playoffs.
Let’s see 1 playoff appearance WITH Byron and 1 without.
BTW, do you think that you might think about an entire 53 man roster instead of two players or one side of the ball….Jesus…

  35. I meant 2007 and not 2006 but it’s still valid. They didn’t release him until September 1st.

  36. Hey Smootysmoot. Obviously Leftwich is worth talking about because some no-name linebacker draws a paycheck talking about him. Which is what makes his comment about Leftwich shutting up perfectly ridiculous. Can any of you people on this site follow the point of the article? Or are you like the articulate Smootysmoot just dumb or a family member.

  37. In regards to what Leftwich said, I am a bit mystified. Exactly what talent did the Jags let go that would have won a Super Bowl if they had kept them? Talk about fantasyland.

  38. @meatball13 and ras6111 …
I doubt the two of you together could make a double-digit IQ. Just because some of the people posting here are pointing out that McManus wasn’t a marquis player doesn’t mean they’re Steelers fans. Few of the people on this thread are Steelers fans. Speaking for myself as a Steelers fan, I don’t care enough about Byron Leftwich to get all pissy when someone tells him to shut up.
@ras6111, edgy1957 is a diehard Cowboys fan, not a Steelers fan, so your kindergarten comment that at least you don’t have a rapist for a QB has no impact on him. And if that’s the best you can do for a comeback when someone is talking seriously to you about the intricasies of the game, then you should stay far away from people like edgy. He’s not my favorite person, but he knows his football and he’s waaaay over your head.
    @Slow Joe …
Thank you!!!! So glad someone pointed out that being an elite athlete isn’t a pass to act like a jerk.

  39. I live in Jacksonville and Tom McManus makes me change my radio station at least four times a week. I hope they are not paying him top dollar. Not only does his show suck he sucked as a player. I think i can remmeber when I was a kid my mom said something to me abut people living in a glass house should not throw stones. I have to admit what he said had some truth to it but come on Tom take a good hard look at your self and tell me how in the world you could have opened your soup cooler.

  40. As a die hard Jags fan — I had high hopes for Byron and wanted the guy to succeed so bad.
But– when you sum things up, the guy is flat out retarded and can’t play.
I think we should all have a few beers, and watch him and Jamarcus Russell run the 40 a few times.

  41. Leftwich’s career peaked while being carried up to the line of scrimmage by his college teammates. That was an inspiring performance but he has not been consistent in the NFL. There have been a few games where he has shined but those are few and far between. His mechanics are far worse than what the analysts have been saying about Tebow’s. The difference is Leftwich chose to believe he was great while Tebow is trying to correct the issue. Leftwich had no business to trash his former team (from several years ago) and McManus was right to call him out. Both were subpar-to-average players but only one has the honesty to admit it.

  42. “Pittsburgh currently has him, and despite Leftwich’s desire to stay we’re still not sure it’s in Pittsburgh’s best interest to keep him.”
what kind of subjective bullcrap is that, Florio? you trying out to be on Around the Horn or something? save the opinions because you are the first one to admit you’re not the smartest guy in the room. and god knows the NFL doesn’t need any more dumb loudmouths.

  43. LOL. How good of a team are the Jags right now? Will they even sell out most of their games at home this year?

    @ everyone else
McManus said “at BEST” Leftwich is an average QB, which means he thinks he’s below average (ie he sucks).
And anyone disparaging McManus must realize 1) he went to BC (I’m BCGreg!) so he’s is spot on 🙂 and 2) usually, the special team, not a “marquis player” makes a better analyzer of the game, so to me, his opinion actually means a little more. Plus, since he’s in Jacksonville, there’s nothing else to do except follow the Jaguars.
He was an undrafted player who hung around for 4-5 years. Not too many guys do that unless they bring something to the table. Not in this league.

    Bert Jones
    Jim McMahon
Johnny Unitas………all with 78.2 QB Ratings.

  50. Gotta love reading comments from people who have never played pro football, bashing a guy who has played pro football for telling it like it is. And his opinion is void because.. let me make sure I got this right.. of his performance on the field years ago? Or because Jacksonville is a small radio market? Only on this website can you find so many idiots in such a short amount of time.
Hey, asshats, this guy knows a lot more about the game than you do. Saying his opinion doesn’t matter because he wasn’t a good player doesn’t work.

  51. So what if Leftwich is an average, or even below average, QB. The Steelers defense is above average, as well as their running gm. They only need someone to babysit the position until Ben comes back.
Only a stupid D-bag like Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones would put a ton of cash into a QB who’s only gonna see the field for 4 gms, if that.
