Javon Walker gets another chance

Javon Walker is back in the NFC North catching passes from Brett Favre, five years after the knee injury that changed the course of Walker’s career.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Vikings are “on the verge” of signing Walker, and a deal should officially go down on Monday.  The story makes a nice late August headline, but it’s hard to imagine it making a huge impact on the team.

Walker hasn’t been nearly the same player since he re-injured the knee in Denver during the 2007 season, forcing him to undergo more surgery.  The Vikings could use some depth at wideout, but we have a hard time believing Walker can even pass Greg Lewis or Logan Payne on the depth chart given his late start.

Walker has only played 11 games with 15 catches in the last two years. He’s played more than eight games in a season once since 2004.

  1. Favre is always bringing home strays. He wanted Moss in Green Bay when everyone else thought he was worthless, he gave Koren Robinson another chance.

  2. You have a hard time believing he will make the team based off of what exactly? Since he hasn’t played in a while you have no evidence as to what the current condition of his knee is. For all you know it might be 100% perfectly healed by now and he just needed a chance to workout and prove it. Of course, you could be right, but since you have no way of knowing for sure, try not to speculate so much.

  3. Joe Webb! Joe Webb! Joe Webb!
Make him a receiver now!!!! Don’t waste your time on Walker. That’s Favre’s idea. Favre knows he’s done.
    Jesus H. Christmas!
That kid needs to be on the field now, especially if the Vikings are going to waste the season with Bret Favre. He needs playmakers….and you can always do the Wildcat if you get bored, with Favre at split end.
Or trade one of your Quarterbacks for a breathing WR….

  5. I don’t get this — why bring in a known malcontent with a major knee injury who’s rarely played recently? Wouldn’t developing a younger player be worth it in almost any circumstance? It seems to me like most of these experiments with bringing back once-great WRs never seem to pan out.

  6. Was Javon able to past the conditioning test?
I never did hear if Brent passed the test.
It seems lately whenever he passes something, it starts to stink really bad.

  7. Does this mean Rice and Harvin really are in jeopardy of missing significant time? This move seems to suggest that as you wouldn’t expect them to sign walker to take away the roster spot of one of their other young guys.

  8. Why stop there! I’m sure Koren Robinson and Andre Rison still have something left. LMFAO!!
THE QUEENS ARE IN SHAMBLES, CAN YOU SAY DESPERATION!! LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. But he had “11 games with 15 catches in the last two years” with the Raiders. Thats the equivalent of 32 games and 160 receptions with a normal team.

  10. cool, J-Walk should have plenty of time to explain to Sidney Rice what he can expect from the rest of his career. (it’s not pretty.)

  11. Correction: He could have had Moss in Green Bay, had he not spilled the beans about his availability, thus allowing New England to enter the negotiations.
Also, Walker tore his ACL after ending his holdout in Green Bay due to JUDAS going public with a calling out of the WR. They are not close.
Actually, this is opportunity is probably over JUDAS’ guilt in their past, more than anything.

  12. This is pure comedy. BTW… it was nice seeing Brent on his back by his 3rd play from scrimmage. Get used to it.

  13. Looks like Rice is destined for the PUP—regular season, or worse, the IR. If Percy isn’t available for significant time, this team is in trouble. Favre will regret his decision to come back and will be subject to a year-long a$$ kicking, kind of like the little beat down he took last night.

  14. This is just to give Rice a little nudge to get back in. I’d be surprised if Walker lasted the entire season with them.

  15. Does anybody else remember when Favre publicly lambasted J Walker for not honoring his contract and not reporting to camp on time? Hypocrite. I wonder if they’ll get over that.

  16. This is good news for Packer fans. It means something isn’t going well for one (or more) of the Vikes premiere WR’s.

  17. It’s not that bad of a signing, there aren’t exactly a lot of free agent #1 receivers out there. Not sure what he has left, but if Rice and Harvin are out then they need someone. And nobody knows what he has left, Davis benched him in Oakland because he got knee surgery without telling anyone.

  18. “Does anybody else remember when Favre publicly lambasted J Walker for not honoring his contract and not reporting to camp on time? ”
I sure do. It was one of the first things that got me carefully examining Favre, rather than blindly apologizing for anything he did.
I bet Javon Walker does, too. And I bet he’ll have no issues sharing Favre’s ability to throw a teammate under the bus in the Minnesota lockerroom, no matter what he may say now to Favre’s assistant, Childress. Or whichever of the trio in Minnesota it was that got the bright idea to bring in someone with hatchet marks in his back from Favre.

Yes, lord knows the pack can’t beat the Vikings when they are at full strength.

  21. “Yes, lord knows the pack can’t beat the Vikings when they are at full strength.”
Uh, in case you didn’t notice, the Packers had a backup LT in the game that Jared Allen beat like a rented mule last season. So we haven’t seen the Vikes beat the Packers at full strength in quite a while either.

  22. Ha ha ha! Boy has that Super Bowl smack talk from Vikeland subsided! How much are you gonna beat NO by again?
Signing an aging injured QB – 20 mil
Getting 3 of his friends to go get him with the corporate jet – 500 k
Signing a cast away Wr cause the others are injured or want new contracts- probably vet min.
Watching the whole thing explode in the Vikes face – priceless.
    See ya in LA vikings!

  23. Davis didn’t bench him. He was so slow Albert Haynesworth could run with him…when did the NFL become a handicapped league…cause Javon needs a wheelchair…

  26. Once again a REAL franchise takes on yet another ex Packer that was thrown away. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Walker catch 40+ balls this season…. oh yah, suck ass Pack fans….

  27. Ohh boy. Now Brett is going to have to hold another team meeting to let the guys know there’s no issues between him and Javon, and remind the team he’s “all in” (now that all that silly off season stuff is done).

  28. I hope he makes the team so he can go across the middle against Green Bay and get LIT UP. I’d love to see that fool get his bell rung after forcing his way out of GB. Karma.

You were at your best the same ammount the Vikes were when they played last year… WORD!

  31. WOW! There are more than a few rabid Packer fans in here. Sheesh.
An aside: does anyone else marvel at how the visitors of a website that is devoted to the NFL so often misspell the name of a 20 year future HOFer? Ex., “Farve [sic] is a stoopid.”
Not meant to be a slam on anyone; I just think it’s ironic. I mean, how many times have we seen that guy’s last name?!?

  32. Geez you packerfans are nasty bastards. Whoever said Favre lobbied to get Walker is nuts. They hated each other. Dumb signing in my opinion though. Walker collects a check and gets hurt…he’s got no heart and will just be a waste of time.

  33. If Walker is catching 40+ balls for the vikes than you’ve already conceded the season. I guess that answers why you guys aren’t talking smack about beating NO.

  34. “Once again a REAL franchise takes on yet another ex Packer that was thrown away. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Walker catch 40+ balls this season…. oh yah, suck ass Pack fans….”

Actually, they took a disgruntled player coming off major knee surgery and traded him for a second round draft pick that became Greg Jennings. Since the trade, Walker has played in 35 games, caught 110 passes for 1,567 yards and 9 TDs. Jennings has 246 receptions, 3,957 yards, and 28 TDs in 56 games, and two healthy knees. If the Vikings need Walker to catch 40+ passes, they’re in a world of hurt.

It’s been all down hill for the guy since he left TitleTown.
One difference between the Packers and Vikings is the Packers have no difficulty saying no to prima donnas.

  39. They just put a WR on IR and two of their guys are unavailable to practice at the moment. It makes sense to get a WR who knows the West Coast system and can immediately contribute to practice and preseason games. Most likely the Vikings don’t intend to keep him when rosters shrink.
I didn’t bother checking but I assume 75% of the comments are from angst filled teens expressing their joy at further evidence of the ridiculously pathetic nature of hands down the most horrifically terrible organization in the history of the universe.

Javon is on record saying he’s lost all respect for BF because of what he did to him. He cited Mike McKenzie & Sterling Sharpe who were also sharply critized (in public) by Baby Brett for holding out and not honoring their contracts
The reason why so many HOFs hate Brett (Woodson, Tarkington, Sharpe, JJohnson etc.) is because he doesn’t (or won’t) follow the unwritten rules of he locker room
    1. You DON’T comment on another players contract situation
    2. You DON’T throw teamates under the bus to make yourself look better
    3. DON’T make your issues w/ your coach a public distraction for your teamates

Make no mistake – The Vikings obviously hate BF as much as the Packers and Jets players/coaches did – but they don’t have a Sanchez or Rodgers in the wings so they have to smile as he treats them like sh*t.
That being said – I do hope ol’ BF sticks around for a few more years. It’s going to fun watching the Queens try to get rid of him in the next couple years when they finally have to tell him to FO.

See, now this is true. If Favre hadn’t thrown 6 INTs against the Rams in 2001, if he didn’t have a 54 rating against the Falcons in 02, if he didn’t throw a wounded duck to Brian Dawkins in overtime in 03, if he hadn’t thrown 4 INTs to the 8-8 Vikings in 04, or if he had not been intercepted throwing to his one covered receiver in overtime against the Giants in 07, perhaps the Packers would have a few more rings. For as good as this guy was, it’s a shame he has only 1 ring to show for it. Now the Vikings are expecting an older, slower version with a 4-6 playoff record without Mike Holmgren, to lead the way to a Super Bowl so that taxpayers in a bankrupt state will pay for a new stadium so the team doesn’t move to L.A.

  52. blah blah blah…. all this talk goes by the way side when super hero Favre plays like the ole man he is this year… mark my words!

  53. “so how do you feel about your record under the gay albino for the last 5 years??”
    Mr Fat,
This is one Packer fan that doesn’t care about the last 5 years nearly as much as I care about the next 5. With Rodgers, Finley, Jennings, Nelson, Jones, Sitton and Bulaga, they have the nucleus to be good on offense for the next 5. In Raji and Matthews, they have arguably the two most important defensive positions covered for the next 5. Sure they need more pieces to the puzzle there but they have a lot of them now, just not guys that would seem solid bets for another 5 years in GB.
So I’m pretty happy with the gay albino (as you so wittingly call him), whose job is to focus on the long-term competitive health of the franchise, not the past. He’s assembled a team that can win now and has a nice solid base for keeping that going for the foreseeable future.
OTOH, your team is built to win now. Pressure is on. Because there is no tomorrow. They already pissed away one chance. They can’t afford that again. Because this might be it for them for a while. Heck, for all we know, 2009 might have already been it for the Vikes to compete with the best the NFL has to offer. Favre may like even numbers in terms of retiring but 2006 & 2008 were not nearly as kind as 2007 & 2009 to him.
    Sincerely,
    Hank

    Mr Fat,
I see that reading comprehension is not your strong suit. Actually, I think the Packers have a fair shot at representing the NFC in the SB and actually winning it, as do a number of other teams to varying degrees (the Vikes not being one of them, Jan 20, 2008 convinced me beyond a reasonable doubt that Favre will always find a way to lose when it really counts).
In order for the Packers to reach that level, they will need to dethrone the Vikes as division champs, which I think will happen, beginning on Oct 24. I get that you think differently and that’s cool. I don’t feel the need to beat my chest over predictions when we’ll see everything unfold for real soon enough.

  65. “raji, seriously??? let me know when he does ANYTHING cause he hasn’t yet and wasn’t he a top 10 pick?? raji = hawk 2: top 10 HUGE disappointments if not busts. harrell = total 1st round bust.”
    Mr Fat,
Yes, Raji seriously. Go back and look at the history of NTs are rookies. It’s not pretty and Raji was no exception. Still, he made some plays when he got healthy after his holdout and subsequent ankle injury. I’m pretty comfortable saying he’ll be the Packers NT in 5 years. And I’m not surprised in the least that you would disagree. Since neither one of us can see the future, I won’t bother arguing with you about it.
Or to put it in terms that you can understand “Oh yeah? well sez u”

wow, if i had to go back to 2007 for some good news i’d hate being a pckers fan too.
what do you want us to do, buy you guys a delorean so you can travel back in time to the good old days when the pckers used to be good???

  67. To cure the vikings offensive line woes maybe they should try and sign frank winters. After all favre and him have a history together.

  68. @Gravy…Seriously do you know anything about football? Your OBSESSION with Ted Thompson is getting really disturbing. From 2000-2009 the Packers-Vikings series is 12-8 in favor of the Pack…I guess cuz you guys beat us twice last year that mean you guys dominated us for the decade…

  69. a pcker fan criticizing the vikes o-line is like jamaica criticizing the american bobsled team.

  70. Just wait till next year! Next year the Packers might beat the Vikings!! Or even win the division!!!! Next year!!!!! Just wait!!!!!

Sorry Queenies – In Titletown we use divisional titles as doorstops. Maybe you can put all those special “division” titles next to your “I am Special !” ribbons you won at the Special Olympics

    Sincerely,
    Hank
    —————————————————-
First off, I would like to extend an invitation to Hank to post here whenever he wants. Good to see a level-headed person on here.
However, I’d like to refute some of your faith in young Packers players.
    – Jones/Nelson: I would ask more than for them to combine for stats similar to what Jerricho Cothery or Nate Burleson put up last year before I started banking my future on them.
    – Sitton/Bulaga: Sitton is solid compared to the other GB interior guys, but still way down the charts when compared to Gs across the league. And let Bulaga play a game first….
    – Raji: While I am terrified of having to go against this guy twice a year if he figures it all out, I’m sure you don’t have to think hard to come up with a few NTs who were highly-touted picks and showed early promise before flaming out.
That being said, you do have some good pieces. Rodgers seems to be the real deal, Jennings is a solid WR (although I want to see how he does w/o Driver next to him before I elevate him into elite status), Matthews, Collins…. But if a team only uses FA to acquire complementary pieces and projects, as the Packers do, 1 or 2 players per year won’t get it done. I hope for your sake that TT will sign the players he needs when the time comes to make your push. It doesn’t have to be an $80 million contract, but a solid veteran starter or two would make the team much more formidable than a couple of rookies.

Thankfully a double-wide only has but one door.
The NFC Central Division was formed in the 1967 football season. That first year the Packers won the inaugural division title, and went on to win the second Super Bowl.
The Minnesota Vikings then would win four straight from 1968-1971. Green Bay claimed their second division title in 1972, Minnesota would then reel off six straight titles. After twelve years of existence, the Vikings would win the Central ten times.
The Bucs would break that streak in 1979, their first of three titles (the others 1981 and 1999). Minnesota followed with its’ 11th title in 1980. In the strike-shortened year of 1982 the Pack finally re-visited the top of the division.
After a Lions first win in 1983 a new dynasty began. The Chicago Bears, whom had not seen a title of any kind since 1963, won five straight starting in 1984. They would go on to be the second NFC Central/North team to win a Super Bowl in 1985. Minnesota interrupted the streak in 1989, only to see the Bears return in 1990. The Vikings and Lions traded title from 1991-1994, the Lions winning odd years and Minnesota the even ones.
In 1995 an old dynasty returned. The Green Bay Packers, led by Brett Favre, would win the division from 1995-1997. They would later add another three year streak from 2002-2004. Favre led Green Bay to its’ 7th and last recorded title in 2007. Seven division titles in thirteen years. Impressive. During that thirteen year span the Vikings won only only two titles (1998 and 2000), the Bears three (2001,2005, and 2006), and the Bucs their final title before leaving (1999).
Since Brett Favre has left the Packers there has only been one winner of the division, that’s the Minnesota Vikings. Their present two year run (2008-09) now gives them eighteen division titles, compared to ten for Green Bay, nine for the Bears, and three for the Lions. In the forty-three years of the divisions’ existence, Minnesota has won over forty percent of the Division Titles.
The Packers have dominated many teams over the years, but the Minnesota Vikings are not one of them. The head to head record between the two teams bears this out, see-sawing back and forth, but always hovering around 50-50.

  73. The NFL’s most bitter fan base. The NFL’s $hi++iest stadium. An empty trophy case, and decades of crushed asperations and dreams.
The only way that this team will ever win a title is to pack it’s $hi+ and move to L.A. like Minnesota’s basketball team did.
Hope you can afford the plane tickets to see your home games in sunny California.
P.S. You know why the Vikings wear purple?
Because that is the color you turn when you choke. 1998 was great, but last year was just hilariuos. Thanks for the laughs fellas. Can’t wait for this years punchline.

You nailed that one, Floppy. Nice work.
Gravy – I don’t understand how you haven’t realized this, but division titles are nothing but a consolation prize. That’s, you know, when you lose, but you still get an award for effort.
Do you know why the Packer faithful aren’t on here bragging about how awesome we were last year, or in 2007 for that matter? Because we WEREN’T awesome. We lost in the playoffs. That’s not a successful season, at least not for us.
I can see by your reactions that a playoff loss is the all time high-water mark for YOUR franchise, however. Enjoy your meaningless division titles. They’re likely all you will ever have. Don’t expect us to care though. We aspire to higher things.

  75. Do any of you d-bags realize that:
-you are simply rooting for a team.
-you do not play in the NFL.
-you haven’t accomplished anything in the NFL.
-your favorite team is likely your favorite team simply based on the fact that you were raised in their market.
-none of the professional athletes you root for have any true allegiance to their team.
-you’re getting worked up arguing about colors of jerseys, things that happened half a century ago to a group of guys that have nothing to do with you.

The “punch line” this year will be the same as the “punch line” last year – humiliation at the hands of Brett Favre. You lost- TWICE! And we are still laughing at your joke of a team and the two “punch lines” they delivered and all the tears from you weenies who don’t know how to deal with being a permanent 2nd place team.
Stop sniffing glue, learn how to spell and then maybe, just maybe we might be able to take your sniveling seriously – because right now you are freakin’ “hilariuos” with your “asperations” of joining the human race.
Here’s a handy tip for you moron: When a word you type has a red dotted line under it – the spellcheck is trying to tell you to look up the correct spelling because you’re not smart enough to spell it on your own, idiot.

lots more wishful thinking by pcker fans today. unfortunately for you guys harvin is due back at practice tomorrow, rice is running and cutting at full speed and the vikes defense isn’t decimated by injuries like the pckers.
i would like to offer you guys some encouragement that you could possibly beat us or win the division in the foreseeable but that’s just not realistic especially while you’ve got a g.m. who’s like 5 games over .500 with 1 playoff win after 5 years cause he’s too cheap to compete.
“I know this may be hard to understand, but winning is the ONLY thing.”
so how do you feel about your record under the gay albino for the last 5 years??

Once again Gravy is an uninformed Homophobe. Rice is running at full speed? really? Wow, must be a ghost or something. All of your “inside” information is entertaining as hell, since your ALWAYS wrong.

  78. I know that the odds are against it, but I would love to see Favre and Walker hook up again on the field. I remember their magical days as Packers, and you never know. I always thought that one of Favre’s many talents was making mediocre WRs look good. He certainly proved that through the years in GB.

  79. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat says:
really pcker fans shouldn’t be allowed to comment till the pckers finally figure out a way to beat the vikes or win the division or win a playoff game, but since that’d mean we’d never hear from them again we’ve decided you’re allowed to comment anyway.
Actually, it’s the Queens fans that shouldn’t open their mouths about anything until their team accomplishes something worthy like winning the Superbowl. Of course, that would mean we’d never hear from you again.
0 Lombardis in 50 years and you delusional fools think this season is somehow going to be different. Here’s a clue: it ain’t.
