C.J. Spiller eventually gets pointed in the right direction

Earlier tonight, we pointed out that Bills running back C.J. Spiller gained a total of minus-16 yards on his first three carries of the game.

He eventually turned it around.

On his final nine carries, the ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft churned up 68 yards and two touchdowns.

It doesn’t change the fact that he started the game with 16 yards of losses on three carries.  (Plenty of Bills fans apparently believe that it does.)

Without question, Spiller will be the key player in Buffalo’s offense this year.  If he can move the chains and attract extra attention, the quarterback(s) will have a chance to find some mismatches in the secondary.  If Spiller can’t force a safety into the box, it’ll be harder for the passing game to be something more than it’s been.

For Saturday night, the passing game held up well.  Trent Edwards completed 13 of 17 throws for 153 yards and a touchdown.

So maybe there would be hope for the Bills this year, if they weren’t in the same division as the Patriots, Jets, and Dolphins.

  1. can you get a one on one with T. O. and see how his return to buffalo was. he must have had a career night in this city (orchard park) case you didn’t know

  2. The Dick Jauron bills beat the jets and the dolphins last year. Apparently everyone has forgotten this.
New England is the only good team in the AFCE.
    Everyone else is beatable.

  3. Don’t like being wrong, huh? You can’t stand getting called out by a bunch of online trolls, so you can’t allow their posts through. OH the horror!
Just face it…you’re a lawyer who wasn’t good enough to practice, and even though you BLOG about football, you really don’t know dick about the sport, do you? You’ve never played a down in your life, have you?
Just like the redskins would make the super bowl in 09. NEWSFLASH: They finished 4 in freakin 12.
The bills are better than you and the national media think, and they will prove it in week 1 when they ROLL Miami…just like they did late last year.

  4. Exactly nagurski. The Patriots will be difficult to beat but Jauron almost did it, so it’s possible. Outside of Brady, no team in the East has an established QB. Edwards, Henne, and Sanchez are all question marks on a week to week basis.
The pre-season may not mean much, but the Bills offense has looked good the last two games. Not so much for the Jets and Dolphins.

  5. nagurski, I couldnt agree more.
I mean, how did the bills get worse from last year?
Well have a problem with the Patriots, but the Jets and Dolphins? Give me a break, we can not only play with them, we can beat them easily.
It cracks me up when one player makes a huge difference for a team. You double Brandon Marshall and you take him out the game. Actually, no need to double for the way he has looked so far.

  6. I think in addition to the Bills beating the Jets and Miami last year, their offense was covered in chaos, Traded pro bowl LT, his replacement was released a week before season, 4 new starters on oline, 3 never played a down in NFL before, OC fired a week before season starts, his replacement had never called plays at any level, and led league in injured players on IR, O line combinations and games lost to injury.
How on earth can folks think that it will get worse this year? Seriously…
The transition to the 3-4 will be biggest question, although they have given up fewer points in every preseason contest.

  7. Realize he’ll have Freddy and Beast Mode to soften up D’s for him when the season starts…

  8. The Bills will be better than last year, but they’re still a pretty bad team. The Bengals first-team offense absolutely shredded their secondary, moving the ball up and down the field at will, and the Bills offense did nothing against the Bengals first-time defense. Spiller gained his yards AFTER the Bengals took out their starters. While the Bengals first-team defense was in the game, Spiller looked lost and helpless against. On more than one occasion, he was actually running BACKWARDS! HA!

  9. Spiller has to start because this line is still terrible at run blocking. Spiller is the only RB of the three that has the ability and speed to turn nothing into something.

  10. “The Tire Slasher,” just because the Bengals took out Palmer early doesn’t mean they took out all their starters.
The first team defense played most of the first half and the first team offense stayed in a while without Palmer.

  11. “Plenty of Bills fans apparently believe that it does”
And this surprises you ? Bills fans are some of the most delusional is all sports. Can’t blame them for being that way after years of Ralph Wilson burying that franchise with his utterly incompetent management of the team.
@nagurski_T_form is a fine example of the type of delusional dreams and behavior of Bills fans. They know they have no real hope of being anything but a bottom feeder team for years to come, so all they can do is write insults if someone doesn’t think their team is SB bound.
Enjoy another year of 2-4 wins Bills fans. Someday Ralph will be gone and hopefully the team will go to new owners outside of his family. Only then will you have a chance to be anything but awful.

  12. we are not delusional. All he is saying is that the dolphins and jets aren’t much better. Everybody has the jets as superbowl favorites, and they won’t even make the playoffs. Dolphins owner has them in the superbowl, now that is delusional!!! Every bills fan knows that we aren’t going anywhere, but the media just keeps on bashing us like we are the worst team. We will go 3-3 in division, our three four will only get better throughout the season with playing time.

  13. Florio, the reason that Bills fans called you out on your earlier article was because you posted an article that made a presumption that Spiller was not looking good after 3 plays. Had you waited to see 6 plays you wouldn’t have written an article in that tone. No one said you were wrong about the yardage; most people said you posted the article too soon because the information was moot 10 minutes later.
Recently, most of the posts concerning the Bills have been negative. We’ve had preseason injuries; you have openly criticized the Bills for drafting Spiller. Even when something good happens, you have to end the articles with a few punch lines about the QB situation, or the O-Line, or the fact that the AFC-East is a tough division.
You and the Bills fans have different interests. Bills fans want their team to do well. You want the Bills to suck this year because that is what you have predicted. If the Bills do well this year, it will go against most of what you have said this year.

I agree with you both. But on the whole Brandon Marshall thing, I don’t believe he needs to be double covered with McGee or Florence covering him. Looks as if we will be in the top 5 again this year with pass coverage. Go Bills!!!

  15. @ Harrison Hits
You say “another year” of 2-4 wins. When was the last time the Bills has 2-4 wins? you, sir, have been served!

Easily? So if you can beat them easily, then you should sweep them both and be 4-2 in the division, right?
Please.. Can you beat the Jets and Fins? Sure, any team can another team, but whether you do or don’t still remains to be seen.
I still think that you guys will end up 4th in the division. Not saying it as a knock, but I think you’ll need another season or two to maybe pick it up.
Btw, if you single cover Marshall, you will lose the game.. easily….

  17. There’s a lot of trash-talking from Bills fans in here, some undeservedly so.
Beating another team in your conference doesn’t change the fact you’ve been AFCE cellar-dwellars, which is what Florio was referring to. Can’t argue with the facts, fellas.

  18. If the bills have the best offense in the NFL it won’t matter because the defense will not be able to get off the field. The linebackers and the pash rush are pitiful, just like they were last year. One thing that often gets overlooked when talking about the QB’s in epitidude is that the offense was rarely given the opportunity to build momentum or imrpove throughout the game because the defense couldnt, and still can’t, stop the run or the short to mid pass.
Sorry bills fans, but you are being delusional.
