NFL Films scores with “Top 100"

Tonight NFL Films unveils the first installment of The Top 100: NFL’s Greatest Players, its new 10-part series counting down the best players in the sport’s history. I got an advance copy of the premiere episode, and like virtually everything NFL Films does, it’s great.

As you’d expect, the show features players and coaches reminiscing about their favorite teammates and toughest opponents, and plenty of footage of the greats in action. There’s even a surprisingly insightful piece in which Spike Lee talks about his affection for Joe Namath.

Without giving the whole list away in advance, suffice to say that the panel of experts who chose the Top 100 did a good job of mixing players from different eras and representing both the players you’d expect and some players the fans of today may never have heard of. It’s well worth watching on NFL Network.

The first episode of The Top 100: NFL’s Greatest Players premieres tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern. Episode 2 premieres Tuesday at 9, and each episode after that premieres on Thursday nights at 9, beginning on September 16.
