The New England Patriots have gotten a head start on their move to 53.
Per a league source, the Pats have parted ways with defensive tackle Damione Lewis.
Lewis, a first-round pick of the Rams in 2001, spent five years in St. Louis and four in Carolina before joining the Patriots in the offseason.
Lewis, who started 16 regular-season games in 2009 and 15 in 2008, instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent.
