Packers cut 20, put 2 on IR, get down to 53

The Green Bay Packers have reached the 53-man roster limit.

Green Bay announced today that the following players have been released: punter Chris Bryan, tackle Chris Campbell, wide receiver Jason Chery, cornerback D.J. Clark, center/guard Evan Dietrich-Smith, wide receiver Charles Dillon, linebacker Robert Francois, tackle Breno Giacomini, quarterback Graham Harrell, tight end Spencer Havner, linebacker Alex Joseph, safety Anthony Levine, running back Kregg Lumpkin, linebacker Cyril Obiozor, linebacker Maurice Simpkins, defensive end Ronald Talley, nose tackle Anthony Toribio, wide receiver Chastin West, wide receiver Patrick Williams and defensive end Jarius Wynn.

There aren’t any big surprises on that list. We noted earlier today that the Packers were trying to trade Havner but probably wouldn’t succeed. We also noted that the Packers wanted to trade Giacomini, but we never believed the report that other teams were interested.

Two Packers, offensive lineman Allen Barbre and safety Will Blackmon, are headed for injured reserve.

Greg A. Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers will reach an injury settlement with Blackmon.

  1. i can’t lie to you, your defense remains 09 wild card game attrocius, your 2ndary is a disgrace to humanity with a 3rd round rookie starting at safety and an undrafted rookie starting at nickel back (and the only thing worse would be if you started jarred bush), no pass rush AGAIN, possibly the worst special teams in the league especially in kick coverage, and an o-line that will wind up in the same place it did last year.
if i could find more than 8 wins in the packers schedule i would tell you but i can’t cuz there aren’t.
    1. vikes
    2. bears
    3. packers
    4. lions

  2. The last few players on the roster are basically meaningless ………. The Pack’s 22 starters will dominate the North Division & the NFC ……… Book your flights for Dallas in February & make sure you wear plenty of Green & Gold ……….

  3. seriously how do you people ever expect to do any better than 2 winning seasons and 1 playoff win in 5 years, which is what the pckers have done with ted thompson as g.m., when he’s so hit or miss with the draft (the next thread after this one talks about failed 2nd round pcker pick brian brohm – add that to 1st round bust justin harrell, 5th overall pick aj hawk who isn’t even one of your 4 best lb’s, and that’s saying something, b.j. raji who couldn’t even start last year and has sh0wn pretty much nothing this pre-season, even 1st round pick bulaga who washed out as a tackle, was moved to guard and couldn’t even crack the starting lineup as the guard) WHEN THE DRAFT IS ALL HE DOES AND HE REFUSES TO ACQUIRE ADDITIONAL PLAYERS VIA FREE AGENCY OR TRADE????
good god how do you think you got into your horrible situation last season with the o-line and your horrible situation this year with your lb’s and 2ndary????
you’ve got a good offense, yes, you scored almost as many pts last year as brett and the vikes, but with your schedule and defense you’ll have to score 40 plus pts a game to even stay in games.

  4. In even more news, Gravy is a complete douchebag. He can’t even string together a complete thought so he has to post two of the first five comments on a thread about who the Packers cut…maybe if your team actually had a number one threat at WR, you might have cause to talk trash. Green Bay will be fine on defense, and as for offense, GB is better at every skill position that matters except RB (WRs 1 through 3, TE, and yes QB) Your fumble-tastic tailback will have to carry your highly overrated team and I will remind you every week when the truth bears its ugly, purple head…MN won’t win the division. Brett Favre will break down. AP will continue to fumble when it matters most and you will still be the first to talk trash on Green Bay threads. Get a life…really, there’s more to life than being a busboy at PF Chang’s…douchebag.

  5. Gay-vy …. I’d pick apart your posts to show your complete lack of football knowledge, but you’ve done a good enough job on your own.

  6. i can’t lie to you, your defense remains 09 wild card game attrocius, your 2ndary is a disgrace to humanity with a 3rd round rookie starting at safety and an undrafted rookie starting at nickel back (and the only thing worse would be if you started jarred bush), no pass rush AGAIN, possibly the worst special teams in the league especially in kick coverage, and an o-line that will wind up in the same place it did last year.

You are so afraid and jealous of the Packers that every single time you see an article on here related to the Packers, you try and talk down on the team to make yourself feel better. You wanna bring up the past? Yes, let’s do that.
How many rings do the Vikings have? ZERO.
You have Favre who is playing on a gimpy ankle and despite what homer Viqueen fans who are delusional think… he’s not going to have half the season he had last year. Sidney Rice is out for half the season, Headache Harvin is always having problems, and that offensive line is rapidly declining. Oh let’s not forget that Henderson and Winfield are coming off season ending injuries. Vikings had one chance to win a title, and they failed, and now the Packers and Aaron Rodgers will run this division for the next decade with EASE.
Oh and the offensive line only gave up 14 sacks in the second half of the season last season, and they are even healthier and have more depth this season. Now you have to playthe Pack with their two starting T’s playing, have fun getting torched. As far as the defense goes, Burnett is way better than Bigby and would start regardless, and they’ve added Lee and Shields as well. They went 6-1 without Al Harris, and will be fine without him.

  7. “Book your flights for Dallas in February & make sure you wear plenty of Green & Gold ”
This is why the economy is so bad in Wisconsin. Every year Packer fans bet the farm on the Packers based solely on pre-season performance and Aaron Rogers’ PR firm hyping everything up.
Pre season and fantasy football, that’s all the Packers are good for.

  8. GMSF:
Get. Off. Of. Our. Shit. Already.
You take our rejected players, and now we have a Queens fan worriedly posting on Packer stories?
Let me guess: You’re another ‘suburban gangsta’.
This just in: Minnesota is not the hood.
    1.) Packers
    2.) Lions
    3.) Vikings
    4.) Bears
You’ll be lucky if JUDAS makes it to week 5 with that line and WR corps. Looks like AP is just as good as Chester at blitz pickup. I hope you guys have a good team surgeon…you’re going to need one.

  9. Gravy… the Packers schedule is actually the easiest schedule in the North, so that is a flawed argument… yea our defense does look like a weak link, but atrocious? How many defensive player of the years are in your secondary? Go away, you’re a troll looking to rile people up, I would imagine you’ve probably never even played a down of football in your life but consider yourself to be a “great football mind”…. (this is where you insist you almost played some bigtime college ball somewhere but blew out your knee or some other reason came up).

  10. Why do you people even respond to Gravy? The guy thinks Raji needs to get 14 sacks playing a NT in the 3-4 to be considered successful. If that doesn’t show his lack of knowledge, I don’t know what will.
Seriously the guy just wants attention. Keep it from him and he will just turn into the rambling idiot talking to himself in the corner.

  11. where to begin?
“Green Bay will be fine on defense”
c’mon, you don’t believe this for a second. the pckers pass d got shredded by every good offense they faced last season and gave up 51 pts in the wc game while the vikes were giving up less than 200 yards to romo and brees.
    ____________
“as for offense, GB is better at every skill position”
behave. the vikes returned all their starters which included 9 pro bowlers and 4 all pros, the pckers lost some starters and only had a few pro bowlers. your offense isn’t bad but they couldn’t score as many pts as the vikes for the last last year and they won’t this year.
    _________________________
    “Brett Favre will break down”
yeah yeah you guys say that year after year. 19 seasons without missing a start, good luck with that changing. rodgers is very unlikely to get past week 8 tho as bad as your 0-line is. 14 sacks on erin, 0 sacks on brett ring a bell?
    ____________________
“Oh and the offensive line only gave up 14 sacks in the second half of the season last season, and they are even healthier and have more depth this season.”
none of you think that clifton or taucher will get thru the season cuz they never do and bulaga couldn’t crack the lineup as a tackle or guard. the vikes by contrast start 2 pro bowlers and 2 youngsters in their 2nd year who will be even better.
not to mention 2 of our top defensive weapons, henderson and winfield, back and healthy now, plus griffen wasn’t even put on pup, he’ll be back quick and rookue cook who was looking like the steal of the draft is back in 2 weeks.
    _________________________
look, finishing 2nd or 3rd in the division can’t be that much of a shock to you cuz that’s where you’ve been since you lost favre and it’s not gonna change in the near future, you just don’t have enough good players to compete with the vikes 9 pro bowlers.
    1. vikes 11-5
    2. bears 9-7
    3. packers 8-8
    4. lions 6-10
    book it.

So, according to you, GB has better offensive skill players than the Vikes, yet Minny managed to put up more yards, points, and wins than GB. Something doesn’t add up here.
And it’s funny how you like to talk about fumbles, but guess which team put it on the ground more times than the Vikes last year? If you said GB, you would be right. In fact, GB has 10 fumbles during the preseason, compared to 3 for the Vikes.
Speaking of fumbles, and how you Pack fans love to rip Peterson for his fumbling problem, here’s a fun fact. AD has 16 fumbles the past 2 years. Did you know there’s a player on GB’s roster who has coughed it up more in that period. That’s right, none other than the Golden Child himself, Aaron Rodgers, who has racked up 20 fumbles the past 2 years. Damn those pesky facts.

  14. PckrFnInMinn, i have seen your schedule, that’s how i deduced your record.
    1. at iggles L (you haven’t won their forever)
    2. buffalo W
    3. at bears L (you BARELY beat them at lambeau last year and they’ve improved)
    4. lions W
    5. at skins (toin coss but their d is good and mcnabb will tear you up)
    6. miami W
    7. vikes L (last year said it all, plus aaron doesn’t throw well under shadow)
    8. at jets L
    9. cowboys L (they won’t be looking past you thisw year)
    10. at vikes L (be serious)
    11. at falcons W (close but packers get nod)
    12. niners L (they’re really good this year)
    13. at lions W
    14. at patriots L (2ndary can’t beat elite qb’s)
    15. giants L (they’ll be playing for something, pack won’t)
    16. bears W
which works out to 7-9 but i will stay with 8-8, pack pull off upset somewhere

  15. Hey Gravy,
After going on 50 years of winning nothing, your opinion means nothing. By the way, 10 years ago did you ever think that the Bucs and Saints would win a Super Bowl before the Vikes? Your franchise is literally as good as Cleveland and Detroit’s. And I know for a fact that you’re licking your chops over our 20 cut players…Oh, How is Antoine Winfield looking this year? Oops.

  16. “And I know for a fact that you’re licking your chops over our 20 cut players”
earth to blow horn, vikes are stacked, they had 9 pro bowlers last year. pckers the pckers have a few decent skill position players and alot of riff raff that shouldn’t even be allowed on the same field as the vikes.
    8 wins for u

  17. mattsgo, so you wanna hear what the scouts say about the pckers this year?

The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
    • “Everyone is talking about Green Bay as a front-runner this year. What is funny to me — I don’t see how Aaron Rodgers won’t be under siege again like he was last year with (OLT Chad) Clifton and (ORT Mark Tauscher) back. It’s the same guys protecting the edges. They did not get younger. (Rookie Bryan) Bulaga could help, but it’s hard to have big expectations for a rookie. I will say this — they are going to need him by the end of the year. … The other part that is scary is — who is playing corner? (Charles) Woodson is still one of the best, but (Al) Harris is the oldest corner in the league and coming off a knee injury (he’ll miss the first six weeks of the season on the PUP list). Tramon Williams is not very good. And outside of Clay Matthews and Cullen Jenkins, they don’t have much of a pass rush.”

you just conceded the argument that the vikes are better cuz you’re trying to retreat into the past in your delorean time machine back to the ice age days when the pckers used to be good. i would change the subject from the present and the future too if the tightwad gay vampire was g.m. of my team.

  20. No point in even talking with idiots like Gravy who know absolutely nothing about football. All of his arguments are “Vikings rule, Packers suck” and shows absolutely zero logic with any of his posts.
The Packers only lost the division by one game last season and never played the vikings with their two starting T’s, it’s already over, the Packers already won the 2010 NFC North division. Favre will have a season like he did with the Jets and lead his team to a 9-7 record at best. The Vikings won’t sweep the Packers and thats a fact, when it doesn’t happen I look forward to your excuses and “You were so lucky” type arguments.

  21. What cracks me up about Vikings fans is…The first football season I really remember growing was when the Bengals played the 49ers in the Super Bowl. So…Since 89 or so, I’ve seen teams like the Bungles, Cardinals, Seahawks, Raiders, Chargers, Panthers (expansion team), Bills a bunch of times, Titans at least MAKE a Super Bowl and teams like the Original Cleveland Browns and Saints win and The Colts, Patriots and The Rams turn into winners, but never once the Vikings. And for some reason, Vikes fans have the most to say. You don’t even know what a Super Bowl contending team is because you’ve never been there. 3 decades and some change, and counting…
With all that being said…Good luck in LA.

  22. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat is clearly concerned; his obsession with PFT articles about the Packers indicate an underlying problem. Whats wrong Gravy? Need to lube up your ankle?

Yeah. Everyone is experts. People who work in the industry. Not you. The common-thread being people who are in-the-know and speak amongst themselves…seeing things we can’t see. But we should be influenced or concerned over your opinion? Right. You’re the guy that makes things up just to feel better about himself, like most people with a bully mentality. Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet gives you confidence. You catch my eye once in awhile, but you’re usually pretty easy to shrug off as just another self-centered parrot.

  24. Gravy needs a hug or something……. His predictions are biased, but he tries sooo hard to come off like he knows something…. Please keep it up Gravy, I need a good laugh.

  25. “it’s already over, the Packers already won the 2010 NFC North division”
that’s right, very much like the 2010 war between iceland and the u.s. is over, iceland has already successfully invaded and conquered the u.s.

  26. Who gives a rats ass about what Gravy thinks. The Packers have an excellent team and every expert on ESPN has picked them to win the division and a few of them have picked them to win the Super Bowl. On NFL.com they are the unanimous choice to win the whole thing. Does that mean that they will win it all just because these guys are picking them, of course not. But it is a very strong indication that they are looked at as an elite team. You have to just not be good but also lucky to win it all. Staying injury free is a major part. I do know one thing. The Vikings are going no where. Their schedule is a lot tougher than last year and Favre is now a year older with a gimpy ankle. Green Bay has a bright future but the same can’t be said for Minnesota.

  29. Gravy Makes Sconnies Fat-
Why are you so concerned with what the Packers are doing? Maybe it’s because you know we are the only threat in the north division, and you are worried you will be watching and or facing us in the playoffs. Let’s get real man both the Queens and the Pack are going to win a lot of games, probably within a game of each other either way. Pack 10-6 or 11-5, Queens about the same 10-6 or 11-5, time to be a realist, you guys have just as many questions in the secondary as us. Both teams have great offenses and questionable defenses. The only difference is quarterback and running game. The Packers have a great quarterback with a crappy running game. The Vikings have a great quarterback who makes bad decisions and a good running game. Favre is due for a down year, there is no way in hell he won’t throw 15-20 interceptions, last year was a fluke. Rodgers will throw under 10, that’s the difference. Favre is also way over the hill and Rodgers is just entering his prime. You guys put too many eggs in 1 basket begging the premadonna back! After Favre blows it again, Chilly-Willy is gone, Favre goes to another team next year(can’t get the hint), and the queens are off to Los Angeles!!!

  30. Gravy, the seasons for our respective teams will play out on the field. My honest opinion is that the Packers are the most talented and well-coached team in the North. I may be wrong, we’ll find out soon enough.
On another note, you’re a college washout, a complete 0 who spends an entire Saturday night railing on a Packer thread, and the only person in PFT history to give a tally of how many women you’ve slept with. The only dude who does that is a guy who has never seen a vagina outside of pictures.
2010 has been a horrid year for you and 2011 looks grim as well. When your family has disowned you and you’re flat out poor and un-loved at the age of 76, at least you can tell the rest of the folks at Minneapolis Center for the Homeless GLBT Community the story of 09.
“Boy, I tell ya. 2009! That was it! We beat the Packers two times, TWO TIMES! They never beat us that year. We woulda won the Super Bowl if it wasn’t for that cantankerous commisioner and the refs and Katrina and the FBI. It was a set up I tell ya!”

  31. Wow, every single player we cut is better than the first stringer on the vike team! This might be the hope for a season if you’re the vikings.
Sure to see a lot of these guys in purple and yella. I can tell you right now Walker was probably cut to fit in Havner. Obviously the talent we cut is not enough for the vikes to overcome 8-8, but I’m raising their win loss to 6-10. What a win for the vikes here.
And releasing Graham Harrell might really help them. Obviously Favre wont last a season and TJ and Webb are both jokes… Harrell could really upgrade the QB position now and in the future!
