Jets re-sign Tony Richardson

Less than 24 hours after announcing the release of fullback Tony Richardson in language that suggested he wouldn’t be coming back, the Jets have brought Richardson back.

NFL.com passes along word that Jets coach Rex Ryan confirmed today that the team re-signed Richardson a day after cutting him.

We noted this morning that Richardson could re-join the team this afternoon, so Ryan’s confirmation isn’t a surprise. But it’s still not completely clear why the Jets decided to cut Richardson yesterday.

But Richardson is back, and the Jets now have two fullbacks, with Richardson serving as the veteran mentor to the hard-hitting rookie John Conner.

  1. I’m surprised Rex Ryan took Conner’s balls out of his mouth long enough to give the ok to bring Richardson back.

  2. This is such a funny story! were gonna cut you because we think your old* oh wait we think were gonna win the superbowl so lets bring you back! GREATNESS!

  3. If only people commented when they knew what they were talking about. Since he has more than 4 years vested in the NFL when he was cut he went straight to free agency and not threw waivers. This was done to make room for the other three people the Jets picked up off the waiver wire. Whats so complicated

Bingo. This release was done with a handshake agreement that we cut you for a day because you don’t have go through the waver system, and we’ll bring you back tomorrow under the same deal.

  5. JetLove214, that would require Dolphin and Pats fans that come on here to bash the Jets because they have no life, to actually have a clue. They don’t care about facts or the truth and they aren’t bright enough to figure this all out.
TRich as he said, being a vested veteran could be released without having to pass through waivers and be picked up by another team. So if you have a handshake agreement that you will return as soon as possible, it makes it a lot easier to release the player if he can’t be claimed by another team. If they dropped a younger player they wanted to re-sign they are at a risk of losing that player.
For you Dolphin fans and Pats fans, I can try and explain it with smaller words if that’s easier for you guys to understand, just let me know.
