Seahawks continue purge of veteran players

In our Week Zero Power Rankings, we remarked that the Seattle Seahawks will soon qualify as an expansion team, if they get rid of any more players who were on the roster in 2009.

They’ve now gotten rid of another one.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, defensive tackle Craig Terrill has been released.

Terrill, a sixth-round pick in 2004, appeared in 13 games with one start in 2009. He had become a key member of the team’s defensive tackle rotation.

As a vested veteran, Terrill becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Seahawks in turn avoided paying him $1.15 million in 2010, which would have become guaranteed if he had been on the roster as of Week One.

It’s unknown whether the Seahawks will bring him back after the first weekend of the regular season, at which time his salary would not be guaranteed. In the interim, it’s possible that former Seahawks coach/G.M. Mike Holmgren will make a play for Terrill, who possibly could slide to defensive end in the 3-4 defense that Cleveland employs.
