Tebow or Quinn as Broncos’ backup? McDaniels hasn’t decided

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels says he doesn’t know yet whether Tim Tebow or Brady Quinn will be the No. 2 quarterback for Sunday’s regular-season opener in Jacksonville.

“We’re not going to name [the No. 2 quarterback] right now,” McDaniels said today, per the Denver Post. “We got three that we like and . . . [Tebow and Quinn] are going to compete and we’ll try to make the decision that we feel is best on game day for our team, based on how we’re going to play the game.”

If McDaniels wants to put in a package of plays that use Tebow in a wildcat-style offense to take advantage of his running skills, it would make sense for Tebow to be the No. 2. But if McDaniels just wants the No. 2 to be prepared to step in and run the offense if starter Kyle Orton goes down, Quinn is probably better equipped to be the backup.

McDaniels says he’ll see how Quinn and Tebow look this week before he makes a decision.

“How they practice and how things look during the week will probably play a large role in determining who we name as the No. 2,” McDaniels said.

A lot of fans in Jacksonville, where Tebow is a star from his college career at Florida, are hoping to see Tebow take the field on Sunday. But they may turn out to see Tebow do nothing more than hold a clipboard.
