Hunter Hillenmeyer's season is over; "illness" to blame

Long-time Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer will be placed on injured reserve, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Hillenmeyer, an eight-year veteran, left the season opener with the with an undisclosed illness.  He also missed the team’s preseason finale with an “illness.”  Hillenmeyer was healthy enough to conduct a few radio interviews Tuesday morning and said he felt better.

That indicates he probably didn’t know this move was coming.  Long “the other linebacker” next to Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs, Hillenmeyer was set to be a versatile reserve this year.

Asked about the illness Tuesday on 670 AM, Hillenmeyer said: “I don’t know exactly the details of all that. You know how Lovie [Smith] is about talking about anything health-related. We’ll leave it
at that.”

  1. He’s out officially for a concussion suffered in the 3rd preseason game vs Arizona. They held him out of the final preseason game vs Cleveland. He played during the 1st half of the Lions game, but complained of dizziness & nausea. It is with no small irony that Hillenmeyer is one of the most vocal proponents of concussion/head injury awareness, and has already agreed to donate his brain upon his death to the football/concussion research institute–the Boston University Center of Traumatic Encephalopathy

  2. Hillenmeier is also the player’s rep on the Bears for the player’s union. It’s common knowledge that player’s reps are more likely to be cut and placed on IR. That’s why most NFL players shy away from that responsibility. Hunter was one of the more visible and respected player’s reps in the league. Don’t underestimate NFL ownership and their actions leading up this new potential labor deal, or lockout.

“my only regret is that i have bone-itis”
Boneitis? That’s a funny name for a horrible disease.

  5. For any of you that want to bad mouth Hunter, please think again.
He is a class act all the way around and it is really unfortunate for him to miss the remainder of the year due to concussions and concussion syndromes.
The team could have forced Hunter to retire, causing him to lose his paycheck for this season, so that should tell you enough of what the organization thinks of him.
So, everyone saying he got AIDS, HIV or Herpes, go find someone else to throw under the bus. Or go to hell.
