Cortland Finnegan aspires to be the NFL's dirtiest player

Last year a poll of NFL players ranked Steelers receiver Hines Ward as the dirtiest player in the league, and Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan as the sixth-dirtiest.

Finnegan, who will meet Ward on the field on Sunday when the Steelers visit Tennessee, says he aspires to be a dirtier player than Ward.

“He was voted the league’s dirtiest player, so you’ve got to give it up for him,” Finnegan said, per Terry McCormick of Titan Insider. “I’m number [six] right now, but I’m aspiring to one day hopefully be No. 1. So, I appreciate it.”

From Ward’s perspective, one dirty player can appreciate another.

“He has a little nastiness, a little dog in him. I like that,” Ward said. “Every time I watch him, I kind of smile. We are still competitors. We are going to go out there and compete and at the end of the game shake hands and wish each other good luck and go on about our business. I love everything about Cortland.”

We’ll see on Sunday whether Finnegan and Ward take a few extra shots at each other in an attempt to secure a place atop the dirtiest player rankings.

  1. I love Hines Ward. I dont think hes dirty, I think hes smart. Those LB’s and safeties are trying to kill him, so hey, if he gets a de-cleater here and there, great for him. I could be wrong, but I dont remember him as being flagged or fined, and if so its rare, so what he does appears to be within the rules. Its already working to his advantage, because its not even game day, and they are already worried about getting knocked out by him.

  2. Last year a poll of NFL players ranked former Steelers running back Najeh Davenport as the crappiest player in the league

  3. The reason Bart Scott ran away from the Ravens to the Jets was that he was too afraid of Hines Ward cleaning his clock twice (and sometimes three times) a year.
    GO STEELERS!

  4. Dirty players are great when they play on your team. Finnegan would look good in Raven purple.

  5. Can’t wait for another win in Titan Town come Sunday. #31 will bring it all day, as I am certain Hines Ward will too. It just won’t be enough. Not this time. Not this Sunday! Go Titans!!

  6. The fact that one aspires to be the dirtiest player in the league, in and of itself, warrants a fine.

  7. Could he be the league’s dumbest player???
I mean, how can you be dirty when you contributed to the Patriots launching of 6 touchdowns????
    They kicked your ass, Court-LAND!!!!!

  9. Hines aint dirty…he an OG in da game!
haters mad cuz he plays offense with the aggression of a defender.

  10. If “Old Number 86” came to your team you’d be thanking the football gods, get a life you Steeler haters.

If your comment wasn’t bleeding with ignorance & ebonics, you would have made a nice comment (that coming from a Browns fan). Too bad that your dumb.

Finnegan didnt play in that 59-0 beatdown last year. That could be the reason why they got 6 TDs was there was two rookies Mouton and McCourty in at CB. Shmuck!

  13. He’s already top 3 in overrated corners.
He hasnt made any noise since 08.

You act as if it was a decade ago dude.
Cortland was banged up at the beginning of last year and he still ended up with 5 ints I think. Not eye-popping numbers with that but definitely tolerable. Also, he’s pretty damn good in run support and tackling in general.
You’ve probably never even seen him play.

  14. when heinz ward isnt stealing money from business partners or crying after a game, he’s looking around for guys with their head turned so he can cheap shot them. classless. perfect “steeler”

Yep, the Titans sure did get their asses kicked that day.
Of course, this would’ve been a much better slam by you if Finnegan had actually played that day (or Harper or Fuller for that matter, the other starting corner and the starting nickel).
They were all out due to injury.

  16. I guess it’s good to have goals, right?

I dont know if this is true. If so….OUCH.

  18. 2 Jets references in an article that has nothing to do with them.
Yes, let the butthurt flow through you.

  19. If Hines was a linebacker or DB, and made the same hits, he’d be praised for being a tough-nosed hard hitting player. Since he’s a WR (often looked at as a “soft” position) he’s called dirty.

  20. That’s what happens when you cross an Irishman with an African American. They should have known better.

  21. So if Hines drills someone with a legal block than thats called dirty, but if a DB drills a defenseless receiver than its called a good hit. It sounds like these whiners have a double standard going on here just because Ward gives them back what they dish out.

Why is it okay for a defensive player to do that, and not an offensive player? WR’s running across the middle know they better keep their heads on a swivel, or they’ll be leveled. LB’s and DB’s playing the Steelers need to follow those same rules. You think these guys aren’t trying to take out Ward any chance they get?

  23. Hines Ward is the dirtiest player in the NFL, according to a Sports Illustrated poll of 296 players released this week.
The Steelers’ wide receiver, long considered the league’s best blocking wide receiver, received 11.6 percent of the vote. He was followed by Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (6.0), Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter (6.0), Bengals safety Roy Williams (5.1) and Titans center Kevin Mawae (4.6). Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan (4.2), Rams guard Richie Incognito (3.7), Falcons guard Harvey Dahl (3.7), Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (3.7) and Vikings defensive end Jared Allen (3.2) rounded out the top 10.

Dirtiest players in the league? Perhaps. But I’ll tell you one thing…..those so-called “dirty” players have gone to an awful lot of Pro Bowls.
My guess is, other players are calling these guys dirty because it’s easier than admitting to themselves that that the guys on the “dirty” list are just straight-up better football players.

  24. “Every time I watch him, I kind of smile.”
Isn’t Hines Ward ALWAYS smiling? He seems to be smiling even when he’s mad, getting penalized, etc. so it doesn’t really say much.

  25. Yo, Heywood:
You took a shot at DB26 as follows: “Dude, you can’t call somebody dumb and then use “your” instead of “you’re.” Way to go stupid.”
The last sentence should actually be constructed as such: Way to go, stupid.
The vicious circle of ignorance just goes on and on and on, huh?

“Too bad that YOUR dumb.” DB26, the appropriate phrase is YOU ARE, also known as, “YOU’RE dumb.” Also, it should be “This coming from a Browns fan” rather than “that” since you had just mentioned the statement. At least Joe isn’t faking his command of the English language.

  27. Finnegan did not play vs. the Pats. Fact.
What is the line on this game? Seems someone thinks the Titans will win.
Sunday cannot come soon enough! Go Titans!

Thanks, Baller, but, the, comma, is, not, necessary, in, that, sentence. Rah,-tard. You, are, a, knucklehead.

  29. Why do you guys continually point out the lack of newsworthiness of a particular item? This isn’t a news site.

  30. Sorry, blowme, but the comma actually IS necessary since you are referring to him as stupid. Go to grammar.com or some other website designed for morons like yourself who have nothing better to do than to attack posters for their grammar and punctuation, in spite of the fact that you yourself are a friggin’ F’tard.
    Douche…

child please. well know fact. change your name to mossy cade or randy woodfield.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Did some research on Wikipedia……
    RANDY WOODFIELD-
Three arrests in the early 1970s for petty crimes such as vandalism and public indecency did not prevent Woodfield from being drafted in the 1974 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers as a wide receiver, in the 17th round (428th pick), but he was DISMISSED FROM THE TEAM that same year after more than a dozen arrests for indecent exposure.
    MOSSY CADE-
Cade was convicted in 1987 of two counts of second degree sexual assault on a woman he was related to through marriage. [1] He was acquitted of a third count, and served 15 months in jail.[2] This incident earned him the nickname “The Aunteater”. (HA HA!!)
Upon release, he was signed by the Minnesota Vikings (!!) but was quickly released after public outcry over his signing. [3]
Holy crap……both those dudes are total losers.
    (Let the comments begin!)

  34. Titans suck. The Oilers were great in the day, but now the Tennessee Turds are nothing but a bunch of steamers.

  35. I find it interesting that several individuals on this post do not know how to spell “win.” They continue to spell it “whine.” Clearly when referring to a team with the only distinction of having won more Superbowls than any other team, they are attempting to show an appropriate level of respect and honor. I just wish they would take the time to spell “win” correctly.

  36. It bugs me when many say Ward only lights up DBs and LBs … and then, only via blindside shots.
You kiddin’ me? You EFFING kidding me???
Ever watch any meaningful stretch of play of Ward’s? Ward has brought down the house face up on d-ends and interior DLs … ask Baltimore, Cincy and Cleveland about that. Ask Denver. Ask Oakland.
People who don’t appreciate who Ward is and what he does are not true football fans. Polamalu would be disgusted with any of ya.

  37. judging by the comments everyone wants only “clean” players in the league? Sounds like a lot of fun to watch..herp de derp derp derp
