Chad Clifton may be a $7.5 million backup

Consider this a good problem for the 2-0 Packers.

Green Bay benched left tackle Chad Clifton during Sunday’s game for a combination of performance and health reasons.  First round pick Bryan Bulaga came in and acquitted himself well.  The switch could be permanent.

“[Clifton] didn’t look good today so . . . He didn’t look like he was healthy,”
coach Mike McCarthy said, via Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “He struggled last week through the Philadelphia game.
We’ll assess it in the morning and set our plan for next week.”

Clifton was paid huge money this offseason by the Packers in a move that looks panicked in retrospect, but made sense at the time.  The Redskins were after Clifton and the team simply couldn’t risk wasting the season without a decent blind side option.

Now it sounds like they may have a very well compensated backup. Clifton was guaranteed $7.5 million on the contract he signed.

  1. Dont be prematurely convinced by Bulaga’s performance here… he was playing against Buffalo, who has NO viable pass rushers and moderately decent-at-best linebackers.

  2. Peppers will beat both of them like red headed step children next week. Almost midnight for Cinderella and their fairy tale 2-0 start against weak opponents.

  3. Even at the 7.5 mill price, I’m happy he’s there. You can never have too many good offensive lineman, and he still can play. That said, Bulaga should and will keep that job.

  4. 7.5 million – that about the same amount of money that Farve has made for the last two games.
The queens should pay Farve more money many he could complete a pass them..

  5. Clifton “aquitted himself well” against the Bills pass rush. Not exactly the most strenuous of tests. Let’s see how he does against a professional team before we start rearranging the depth chart.

  6. Clifton missed two days of practice this week … so it wasn’t surprising to see Bulaga getting some action.
Right now, Clifton is the better pass blocker, and Bulaga is probably the better run blocker.
This is a nice problem to have … we get to rest the veteran in hopes of getting him healthy, and the youngster gets the game experience.
And since the Bills are in a rebuilding mode, it was a nice game for the Pack all the way around.

  7. I would rather have a $7.5mil backup than a porous offensive line with no depth…I’m looking at you Minnesota.

  8. It’s a premium position, and it’s nice to have depth this season, so I’ll take it. His salary has no effect on the team’s performance, nor did signing him to that amount affect anything did in the offseason besides help the offense by drafting Bulaga. It’s a non-issue.

  9. Cliffy is a warrior and was being rewarded for years of drama-free service.
Let him heal up and collect the paycheck. Plenty of cap room.

  10. Clifton showed his age in a hurry against bullrushes this year, and has shown he isn’t going to come close to holding up the whole year.
Good they can make an effective switch before it costs the team a game, or worse.
Bulaga looked very good in there today, certainly for a rookie making his first start in week 2.
So, you’ve got first round talent starting at Left Tackle, with a proven veteran backing him up.
    Good place to be.

  11. Can’t remember ANY team ever complaining about too many servicable LT’s. The O-Line was the weak spot in ’09 for the Packers, and now it’s a strength w/ depth… to go along with the leagues best WR corp AND a top 3 QB. SB45 looks quite possible with Dallas and Minny showing their true colors.

  12. Reading way to much into Bulago playing you are, as Yoda would say. Whatever, today was a perfect situation for the rookie to get some time. Stop trying to brew a controversy, their will be none at Packer camp.

  13. Heal up Cliffy, we got a Super Bowl to win.
MM will use BJ and Crabtree to chip Peppers and help out Bulaga. Not too worried, seems like TE’s are going in motion a lot to help out.

  14. After next week’s MNF game there’ll be only ONE undefeated team in the NFC Norris and it won’t be Da Bears…
    Enjoy 2-1 bitches!

Especially because there is no cap this year.

  16. I was positive in the Eagles game I saw Cliffton on the ground holding his right knee. He was in again the next play, but I think he may have injured his knee, or they are just old and busted up.
Maybe Farve can lend him some of his joint oil.
Let them rotate the position to let Bulaga get some experience and Cliffy some rest. Long season.

Wait, what? Your Bears almost lost to the Lions. Let me repeat that: ALMOST. LOST. TO. THE. LIONS. Also, last year’s playoff contending Eagles are “weak”? And not only that…last time we played the Boys, we beat them. So…your point? Let’s see how many interceptions Cutler throws on Monday, pal. What’s your over/under? Lawlz. Da Bears have a long road ahead of them before they live up to Ditka’s one-year wonders.

  18. I don’t need to hear any of you Bear fans on here. You guys aren’t legitimately 2-0. You know in reality you should be 1-1 and have a loss to the Detroit fricken Lions so just wait until next week before you start talking.

My thoughts exactly. I have high hopes for Bulaga, but let’s wait until he lines up against a real defense before we anoint him.

It’s tough being a Packer fan. On your western border, you contend with the whiniest, lamest joke of a franchise with the worst “little-dick” complex in all of sports.
To your south, Bears fans. You think Polish people are known for being stupid for no reason?

  21. Packers are in for a disaster when Prince PoppyCock aka Rainbow Warrior Aka Aaron Rodgers gets hurt…..
Oh, and when bloated Face Matthews gets drilled for steroids…..eat it…
