Consider this a good problem for the 2-0 Packers.
Green Bay benched left tackle Chad Clifton during Sunday’s game for a combination of performance and health reasons. First round pick Bryan Bulaga came in and acquitted himself well. The switch could be permanent.
“[Clifton] didn’t look good today so . . . He didn’t look like he was healthy,”
coach Mike McCarthy said, via Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “He struggled last week through the Philadelphia game.
We’ll assess it in the morning and set our plan for next week.”
Clifton was paid huge money this offseason by the Packers in a move that looks panicked in retrospect, but made sense at the time. The Redskins were after Clifton and the team simply couldn’t risk wasting the season without a decent blind side option.
Now it sounds like they may have a very well compensated backup. Clifton was guaranteed $7.5 million on the contract he signed.
