Braylon Edwards may have a new problem in his favorite state

Former Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, a Michigan native, has made no secret about his dislike for the city of Cleveland specifically and the Commonwealth of Ohio generally.  (And here come the “It’s not a Commonwealth!” comments.)

There’s nothing going on in Cleveland,” Edwards recently said.  “There’s no real estate.  There’s
no social life, no social networking.  All the people who have something
going on leave Cleveland.  So Cleveland has nothing, and I came in there
with a New York-type of essence.  So what?  That was the attitude I came
in with.  Like, this is who I am.  They didn’t like the flash.”

Edwards may be regretting those comments soon, given that prosecutors in Cleveland soon will have to decide whether to charge Edwards with violating the terms of his probation — and given that Municipal Judge Michelle Early would then have to decide whether Edwards indeed violated the terms of his probation by being arrested for DUI in New York.

“Someone who has as much to lose as you should not be standing in front
of me,” Early said when placing Edwards on probation in January 2010, after he pleaded no contest to aggravated assault.  “Situations like this are senseless.  You
have to make better choices
.”

Media reports do not indicate the duration of his probation, the terms of which commonly include avoiding alcohol.  If the probation lasted for nine months or longer, Braylon ultimately could be checking out the “social life” and the “social networking” in one of Ohio’s finer penal facilities.

  1. Although Nick Saban royally F-ed us when he picked Culpepper over Brees, at least we can thanks him for picking Ronnie Brown over Braylon Edwards.

  2. Way to continue the Jets hate, Florio.
Maybe you should have waited to see how the story develops first? Uhmm…naaah. Not when you can gain 50+ posts based on speculation and negativity towards the Jets, right??

  3. Maybe the NFL can’t punish him for “Substance Abuse”, but they CAN punish him for violating the terms of his probation.

  4. Ok…drinking and driving is an insanely stupid thing. Doing it while you’re on probation and can lose your freedom for even a short period of time is borderline retarded.

  5. Oh christ…. is this the new issue that required 9,000 posts in one day?
come on guys.. try to keep it under 4… you’ve already had 3… that leave you one more for the day.

  6. Thank you Braylon for giving the Browns fans something to smile about.
…you leaving NE Ohio was the best thing that’s happened to this organization in quite some time!

  7. Hugh,
Right, because breathalyzers aren’t conclusive. Well, at least to people who aren’t lawyers or superfans that excuse illegal behavior because the guy wears the jersey of their favorite team.

Stop cryin. The Jets suck, their mouths continually write checks their @sses cant cash, and ONE win over the Pats doesnt change that.
Their trash talking isnt made up, and neither is this story sbout Edwards. No matter how you slice it, their is NO excuse for DUI OR DWI by anyone, LET ALONE a profeesional athelete with all the monetary means to call a cab, rent a limo, or call a teammate to come get you. Hes a thug, (he proved that by being on probation for assault—and yeah THATS not made up either) and one of those people who thinks the rules dont apply to them.
All this negativity toward the Jets was brought on by their “we are the preseason champs BS” theyve been spewin.
And this negativity brought to Edwards was brought on by him being a DUMBASS.
Face it, they brought this on themselves. ALL of them.

  9. Florio, you must be a psychic because you saw this coming. Ohio is not a commonwealth state. Kentucky and Virginia are, but not Ohio. Look it up before you say it is, then try to make us look like idiots for telling you otherwise.

  10. Good thing they didnt make him empty his beard. Could have had a Paris Hilton situation on our hands.
Logic says booze wasnt the only player if he was wide awake at 515am.

  11. Edwards is such an asshole that it is hard to feel bad for the guy. He needs a good ass-whooping.

  12. He’s an idiot. But he’s also spot on about Cleveland. Even people born in Cleveland admit the only thing they have going for them is it isn’t as bad as Detroit.

  13. At least he’s right about Cleveland.
Who would go there unless they absolutely had to?
It’s not called the “Mistake by the lake” for nothing.

  14. “…in one of Ohio’s finer penal facilities.”
How happy were you when you got to type “penal?”

Yeah, like the media did with Roethlisberger huh?

  16. Roethlisberger never got arrested. Never got a ticket. Yet, he gets a 4-6 week suspension.
So, Edwards should be suspended for at least half the season.
The Steelers could whip the Jet’s @$$ on any given Sunday!

  17. I’m a Michigan fan and I went to U of M.
Braylon Edwards has been an embarrassment to Michigan since getting into the NFL. Now he’s the Jets problem… good luck with that. Go Blue!

Dude, the guy got arrested and was in front of a judge, how much more do you need the story to develop.
It’s not like he allegedly did something. He tested .16.

  19. How the F&$@ can this NOT be a viloation of his probation? What does a guy gotta do short of killin someone to violate parole/probation? Oh wait Mikey Vick did that! He’s still out! If I was an NFL player, I would want ot be on probation upon being drafted. 😉 SAFETY ZONE

  20. “come on guys.. try to keep it under 4… you’ve already had 3… that leave you one more for the day.”
4 is not “under 4.” Learn some math.

  21. Hey Deb,
Showtime says there is a difference between DUI and DWI in New York. Can you explain the difference. You are the only one I trust to do this.
    Go Steelers!!

  22. Uh, this guy won’t do a minute in jail based on the scenario you describe. Also, he is absolutely right. In fact, he should have gone further in stating that the entire state of Ohio is completely bereft of any redeeming qualities.
I hate the Jets and the Browns, but when you’re right, you’re right no matter how big a jackass you are.

  23. why don’t players learn from other players? i don’t get it. His former teamate Donte Stallworth, KILLED A PERSON DRINKING AND DRIVING!!! Vincent Jackson is suspended for violatign substance abuse policy. Plaxico Burress is STILL IN JAIL for being a moron with a gun. Michael Vick lost TWO YEARS OFF HIS CAREER for doggie violence. Ben Rothlesberger isn’t playing right now because he can’t divorce himself from his frat boy days. When will a player look at all these stupid moronic examples and say,”damn, i don’t end up like them” but they don’t because they all think they are invincable and above the law!!!
I blame the college game personally. You bring a person into an institution of higher learning. basically crown him king of the campus. girl line up outside their dorms in waiting. Police let them get away with everything that isn’t stealing or beating up on someone else. Coaches pamper, boosters “boost” agents gift,a nd then they get drafted and handed millions. not a good way to prepare people for the real world. i am in favor of all sports having minor league systems that can train people on how to handle being a professional while they learn their trade.

  24. I didn’t know they bottled “New York type essense”. He’d better hope no one tosses him the soap in prison.

  25. Roethlisberger never got arrested. Never got a ticket. Yet, he gets a 4-6 week suspension.
Yep, because HE (unlike Edwards) was smart enough to committ crimes that are HARD to prove. With his fame status, whos gonna stand up to him in court amongst death threats by people who are loyal to idiots like him?
You can prove a DWI or DUI with testing, and aggravated assault by the physical effects of a fist punching the body multiple times.
    Ya get it?
The Steelers could whip the Jet’s @$$ on any given Sunday!
^^^^ Woah buddy, I hate the Jets, but man please. Sanchez sucks, but Id take him over Leftwich or Batch or Dixon. Now with the serial rapist at QB, its different, The Jets would get killed. But right now? Again, man please.

  26. Throw him under the bus! Put him in jail with Plexico. He needs that. So much talent, so few brains!

True statement there, shows just how long The Clowns have sucked and swallowed.

  28. He obviously hasn’t learned anything from his past experiences with the law (IE – Driving 120mph in a 60, assault etc…) Maybe some time in jail will help to finally get through to this moron.

Jets Hate? go look at his rankings. He has the Jets in the Top 6 at 1-1. And they looked terrible vs the Ravens. Against the Pats they had a decent game. A couple less mistakes by the Pats and it would’ve been a lot closer.

  30. Whodey08
Win a playoff game. Being mediocre, sneaking into the playoffs, and losing does not give you any level of superiority.
Braylon getting arrested was spectacular. The guy is completely worthless. I hope he actually spends time in jail in Cleveland, that would be poetic justice. Whoever his judge was should make that happen, it’s an easy way to get reelected.

  31. When Edwards gets out of jail he is going to go to WalMart and take 30 items through the ten item or less line because the rules don’t apply to him. Ten items man, ten or less. That makes me so angry.

  32. Hugh, you sir are a dope.
The jets have brought ALL this on themselves by the aimless boasting about nothing. No one likes a blowhard.
The “rest of the world” knows what the jets are…. 41 year failures. Time for a reality check.

  33. This is what happens when you overdo the 5-hour energy and stay up until 5am.
from the NYT article: “Inside a Manhattan lounge last month, Edwards, 27, sipped white wine and explained how the Jets, the N.F.L.’s boldest team, in its biggest market, returned serenity to his life. He gushed about his year-old son, Braylon Jr., about the improved relationship with his offensive coordinator, about his mother’s recent wedding vow renewal, attended by Edwards and The Beard. ”
White wine, Braylon? Check your beard at the door, ya poof! LOL

  34. My Mom was right, you are always better to remain HUMBLE. I’m a ALKI (Edwards) , I’m a TOKER (Holmes) , I’m a mid-night JOKER (Ryan) acting cocky all night long!!! The monetary greed that was created by bringing in high prices free agents has this team imploding!!!! I luv it, the Cowboys & Jets rotting from the inside out!!!

  35. The thing with Edwards was he couldn’t hold on to the ball.
One minute he flashed brilliance, the next minute he was a bumbling, stumbling, fumbling fool.
Andre Rison was flash, Eric Metcalf was flash, Michael Jackson was flash, Webster Slaughter was flash, but they understood Browns fans and our passion.
He couldn’t rise to the status of God in Cleveland because of his inconsistencies – thats his problem not ours! You can talk about what New York has all you want, but if you aint producing – they will run you out quicker than bell bottoms going out of style!
    Believe that Jack!

  36. This arrest raises questions about Edward inconsistency. During the course a game he will make a circus catch and on the next play the ball will bounce off of his facemask.
He blows a great play with a motion penalty, scores a TD, and then gets penalized for taunting.
So, note he was pulled over at 5:15 A.M with a .16 breathalizer reading. Unless the Jets start practice around 4:00 in the afternoon he would be a complete wreck.
How can you play on Sunday if you can’t stay straight the rest of the week?
When the Browns traded Edwards I thought that Mangini had over reacted. Now I’m not so sure.
Also, I don’t think that the culture Rex is creating helps the situation either.

  39. i don’t understand how they can have a system set up to give free rides home, no questions asked, and even retrieve your car for you….. and players STILL get DUIs.
What idiots. This is clearly a violation of his parole. “Good” players don’t get DUIs a couple of months after beating up somebody.
    Clearly a trash person.

  40. Whodey08 -Since you’ve got sucking and swallowing on your mind, is it true Ocho Stinko cracked a rib bending over B.O.’s hot tub of love? The browns may be 0-2 , but they will spank those little kitties soon. Go browns!!

True. Just like the Giants and Jets are in Jersey.
Or put another way; the original Cleveland f-ball team is in Baltimore, Cleveland’s best hoop player is in Miami.

  48. Whodey08
My wife is from Cincinnati. Aside from Skyline Chili and my wife, not much has come out of that town.
She decided to go against the majority of the population in Cincinnati and marry outside of her immediate family.

  49. Even without Edwards, Holmes, Revis and Jenkins I am still confident the Jets will beat up on the Fins

  50. I think all these morons that get DUI/DWI should be suspended at least 1 game…even if they buy a plea deal. If the BAC shows over legal limit, toast, no appeals, no more BS. There can’t be any wiggle room based on production or potential TV ratings. (Yes that would include the dumbass Dolphins that did it as well)

  51. If the terms of the probation were for him to stay away from alcohol, it would not matter if it was a DWI or DUI. There may be a difference in New York, but i believe drinking is still drinking. Could not of happened to a nicer guy!!

And if your mom didn’t have so much facial hair, she wouldn’t be employed by the circus…..whats your point? Woulda, shoulda, coulda

  53. he just doesn’t get it – the Jets have a line that players can call to get a ride home and Braylon was drinking with Donte the night that Donte killed that jaywalker while under the influence. Braylon, wake the F up.

  54. “Right, because breathalyzers aren’t conclusive.”
Actually, they aren’t, which is why in places like Florida, it’s very easy to get out of a DUI charge.
As inconsistent as the machines are, the roadside tests are even worse, which is why they don’t even bother trying to convict based on those.
Call me crazy, but I don’t like the idea of making it a crime to operate a vehicle. If a person causes an accident, charge them with causing an accident. Picking an arbitrary BAC level and arresting people doesn’t stop them from driving drunk, especially when the law allows a cop to arrest someone for simply trying to sleep off their buzz in their car.
But I know my opinion will be unpopular because drunk driving has been so successfully demonized by the media that nobody even stops to think logically about such a retarded law.
As for Edwards’ comments, he’s right, there is nothing going on in Cleveland and Ohio blows. And the idea of his comments possibly affecting the outcome of the sentencing (as alluded to in the third paragraph) is absurd… I would certainly hope our so-called justice system wouldn’t be THAT bad.

  55. “Could not of happened to a nicer guy!!”
The word is HAVE. “Could not of happened” makes absolutely no sense.

  56. @Whodey08
