Vernon Davis: "We will win." Todd Haley: Whatever

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis has guaranteed victory on Sunday at Kansas City.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley doesn’t care.

“We have to win this one. We will win this one,” Davis said. “I’m pretty confident that we will pull this one out. . . . We will win this game. We have the team to do it.”

Not exactly Joe Namath before Super Bowl III, but a fairly bold assertion on Davis’s part. But Haley doesn’t sound like he’s planning to print Davis’s comments and post them on the locker room bulletin board.

Vernon Davis is a heck of a player and a heck of a competitor,” Haley said when asked to respond. “I would expect that to be his belief and viewpoint.”

Haley said he’s not going to worry about what Davis says because, “We are really focused on our task at hand, which is getting a little better each and every day.”

And so Haley ruined a chance to give us a fun war of words heading into Sunday.

  1. I listened to Davis’s interview he didn’t sound very confident in his prediction. As a Chiefs fan, naturally I think the Chiefs have a chance since they are at home. But, some major changes need to happen on offense first. Like scoring for instance…

  2. OMG!! BREAKING NEWS!! This just in:
The Bears think they will win this weekend!
The Chargers think they will win this weekend!
The Vikings think they will win this weekend!
The Dolphins think they will win this weekend!
The Texans think they will win this weekend!
    The………………

  3. 49ers are going to smash the Chiefs because their coach is too stupid to realize he has one of the best RB’s in the game and he is giving the ball to Thomas Jones. The Chiefs deserve to lose just because he is that ignorant!

  4. the media basically baits these guys into “guarantees” and then attempts to stir the pot when they say something. Both Vernon and Haley are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. And Vernon is right, they ARE going to win this Sunday. They don’t have a choice.

  5. Todd Haley is either the worst coach in the NFL, stupid, or both. The Chiefs will lose at home to SF and Jamaal Charles will have 10 carries and Haley will still be stumped about his team’s offensive production. The man is clueless…

  6. Go Chiefs Defense! Get me a couple pick 6’s! A little Eric Berry steppin in front of a pass headed Davis’ way would do just fine in my book! …and is not out of the realm of possibly happening when Alex Smith is the QB chuckin it.

  7. Can’t agree that Haley is class, but I do hope the Chiefs win just to shut these guys up. Crennel is a better defensive coach than Singletary. Just because the Niners out-played the Saints for most of that game (but still gave up the big play in the end), they act as if they’re headed to the SB. When they can grind out a win on the road while not playing their best against a quality opponent, then I’ll respect them. Before it’s all said and done, the Niners will be trashed by somebody when it matters most and they’ll be saying (again) how they really were the better team anyway.

  8. Where does coach Haley ever say “whatever?” if anything, he commends Davis for taking that position because that is what prideful players like Davis will say.
Once again, PFT making a story out of nothing.

  9. The chiefs defense is way overrated! They are blowing themselves up over games against the Browns enough said there, and a chargers team that is off sync. Hell half of the players in SD don’t even want to be there. The chiefs strictly rely on their running game that isn’t going to be there on Sunday. The 49ers consistently shut down the best backs in the league. Gore will be the first credible back that KC faces, and as such, he is going to stomp a mud hole in them and walk it dry. As far as Berry, probably will be a great safety, but everyone knows what happens when ANY safety tries to cover Davis

  10. Davis’ comments sound strikingly familiar to Singletary’s, “not try, we will stop the Saints” rampage… I hope the Chiefs win just to push Singletary one step closer to using a Mortal Combat finishing move on the first reporter to ask him about why his team sucks.

  11. I would like to point out that the 49ers have a .163 winning percentage in games east of the Rocky Mountains since 2002. (because that’s all the further back I cared to look)
Some of you football Phd’s forgot to notice that with the exception of some garbage yards at the end of the 1st half against a prevent defense, Jamaal Charles had a rough day against Cleveland. We all have bad days. I bet Charles doesn’t have one Sunday.

  12. “And so Haley ruined a chance to give us a fun war of words heading into Sunday”.–That never stopped you guys before!

  13. haley is smart in that he doesnt want to give anyone any bulletin board material.
especially since the niners will likely win anyway.

    =============================
exactly. this is the media churn. none of it is original – they follow the same formula, talk out of both sides of their mouths to criticize players when they talk and when they don’t talk
PFT whored it’s way to NBC doing this

Every player on every team thinks they will win. If they don’t, they shouldn’t be playing pro football.
^^^ Thank you. And I will go even farther and say this is and SHOULD be true of ALL sports.
WHY this is such a big deal when someone says “we are gonna win” is dumbfounding….

  16. Pretty big words considering SF got blown up in Seattle and blamed Communication on the issues. Last I checked Arrowhead is loud as hell.. But I hope hes right as a Niner fan

Matt Cassel is terrible. How are the chiefs 2-0?
    ————————————————
The Running game… and it doesnt hurt anything when you play Cleveland.

  18. Guaranteed Victory?
Well, I guess I’m starting VD in the flex over two starting RB’s. He is going to absolutely destroy the Cheifs. I just hope he doesn’t injure Eric Berry in the process.

  19. Beating the Chiefs is a bold assertion?
Maybe for the Rams or Browns. But the 49ers won’t have any problem beating the Chiefs.

Sounds to me like the 49ers coach is the idiot here. He finally figured out how to call the plays into the huddle but he still hasn’t figured out how to win a game. Singletary’s job, not Haley’s is the one that is in trouble.

  21. Uh Haley mangini and singletary arent head coaches.. I feel sorry for Charles because after proving himself last year they reward him by cutting his carries and signing Thomas and cluster. It’s really sad. Then not giving mccoy more time in the reason to develop will ruin him.. mangini is a moron.. Haley well.. letting leinart go for Derek the interception king is def. working out..

  22. Jamaal Charles stinks. Just because you have him in fantasy leagues doesnt mean anything you weirdos. Have any of you ever seen him pass protect? Of course you havent. Ever hear about his fumbling issues? Of course you havent. He did alot against the Oakland Raiders, Browns and Broncos who didnt care at the end of the season. You people are pathetic. Fantasy this, Fantasy that.

  23. I can’t stand the Chefs but will pull for them to shut Davis’ mouth. Vernon is a fool. Chefs better not disappoint either

  24. another PFT writer trying to create a story where there isn’t one . . . . thanks for wasting the last 45 seconds of my life jackass.

  25. I think Mike Singletary should give up on wearing a cross at the game. I mean shit, how many people where football helmets to church?

  26. @ sluggrad
Very funny comment about Singletary. Unfortunately one more loss may just push him over the brink.

  27. Note to Vernon:
    AFC DOMINATES the NFC
jot that down and put it under your pillow.
I can’t tell you who will win the Superbowl, but it will be a AFC team.

  28. Carlhess1 actually yes i watched his fumbling issues at texas when he was in college and also in high school, pass blocking isny an issue because hes a pass catching fast light rb..thats not his job..so whatever hatred you have built up for the kid calm down and dont take it out on fantasy guys..

  29. Coaches shouldn’t spar with opposing players, especially if they’re not talking junk. Davis just said he thinks his team is better. No harm in that.

    You mean, like last year?
The Chiefs offense has not been good thus far this year. Now they’re going to go up against a top 5 defense.
    Niners win by 14.

I don’t know who’s acting like we’re gonna win the superbowl, where is this information coming from? any team leader will say stuff like that, specially when they think they have a better team than the opponent. its just sports, its about competition…
Raiderchile — How’s davis an idiot? he has become a great leader and a very good player… i’m sure that if he was in your team would be saying that he’s the best TE in the league.. I thnk you’re the IDIOT!!

  32. @CarlHess1
You’re right. The Broncos didn’t care if they won their last game against the Chiefs to send them to the playoffs. Idiot.
    Chiefs win ugly, AGAIN. 24-13
    I’ll take it!

They never quoted Haley as saying that. Notice the use of quotes in the headline. You have to look more carefully before clicking these articles.
