Colts learning, winning on the fly

We take the Colts for granted by now.

They win two straight games after an embarrassing opener, and we shrug. It’s the Colts.

They call up The Blair White Project from the practice squad to be the team’s third receiver against the Broncos, and the undrafted rookie comes up huge. Second-year wideout Austin Collie -- taken in the fourth round -- now lines up as a starter. He leads the NFL in receiving yards through three weeks.

At left tackle, the Colts turned to another undrafted rookie: Jeff Linkenbach. Big deal.

“He hung in there,” coach Jim Caldwell via the Indianapolis Star about Linkenbach’s first start. “He played tough, he’s a scrappy guy.”

The Colts are a work in progress, but we’re amazed at the team’s ability to win while figuring things out along the way.

“I don’t know if we’ve played enough football to determine what our strength is quite yet,” Peyton Manning said Wednesday via ESPN’s AFC South blog. “We’re still kind of finding our identity a little bit with the personnel and what we’re going to hang our hat on every single week.”

Um, we’d recommend hanging it on Manning. Just make sure it’s an extra extra large.
