Clay Matthews’ sacks NFC defensive player of the month award

It’s fitting, we suppose, that Packers linebacker Clay Matthews was named the NFC’s defensive player of the month. After all, it was Matthews’ successful planting of Kevin Kolb’s face into the Lincoln Financial Field turf that opened the door for the NFC offensive player of the month, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, to take the field and take Kolb’s job.

Matthews racked up six sacks in two games. He was the first player in Packers history to register at least three sacks in consecutive outings.

It’s the first time any Packer linebacker has won the award since Na’il Diggs, way back in December 2002.
