John Fox makes it clear that Dwayne Jarrett was cut because of DUI arrest

Though there’s a chance that Panthers receiver Dwayne Jarrett will file a grievance claiming that the Panthers can’t discipline him in any way for his second DUI arrest, Panthers coach John Fox opted to call it like it is when discussing the situation on Sirius NFL Radio.

Appearing with Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan of Movin’ the Chains, Fox was blunt.  “I think we’ve got a situation here where we do a lot of things for our guys to make sure that doesn’t happen and he couldn’t follow the protocol so we’re going to move on,” Fox said.

“It’s amazing,” Kirwan responded, “and this is about every guy who doesn’t get it.  What’s up with these guys, John?  It’s like raising kids.  You think you get the message across and you come home and it’s still the same problem as the night before.”

“Well, I think anytime, you know, just we’re a part of society and it just gets more publicized, I think, when you’re a star athlete,” Fox said.  “But you’re going to have these issues.  We’re just a portion of society and, you know, it happens every day, you just don’t hear it as much in other facets of it.   It’s part of people that make mistakes.  You know, I think, there’s a lot of guys that are doing it right that sometimes we don’t hear quite as much about but unfortunately this is one that he wasn’t doing right.”

As we explained earlier today, paragraph 11 of the standard player contract permits a team to cut a player if “he has engaged in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to adversely
affect or reflect on Club.”

  1. I bet Jarrett would be signed by the Bengals who seem to be crazy towards WRs. Also they are the team that give second chance to convicted players.

  2. It’s pretty easy to get a guy because of a DUI arrest when he’s a terrible football player.

  3. Good for him, draw a line in the sand.. enough of this nonsense..
Learn from this, Rexy, your boy Braylon’s gonna get popped again… guaranteed, he’s a bad seed

  4. Seems pretty clear that he was cut because he “he couldn’t follow the protocol”… just sayin

  5. Uhhh…… Hey Foxy. Jarrett is NOT a “star athelete”. You cut him only because he’s not an elite player and you’re trying to keep your job.
A blue-chip player would’ve been told he’s a bad-boy, put on time-out for 30 minutes, and then put back into the ring.
Nobody is buying your crap Fox.

  6. I don’t know if my comment will get approved or not, but its obvious why he was cut: he’s been a career underachiever.
Jarrett proves you can’t draft players based on potential and pure athleticism. You draft them on how technique sound they are. This is why fellow usc receiver steve smith is flourishing and jarrett is on the street.
It’s too bad, teams around the NFL will continue to draft players that are raw, but because they have so much natural athleticism, they get drafted high. It’s unfortunate but clubs will never learn their lesson.
I wonder how high Patrick Peterson gets drafted this year based on how much of a physically gifted athlete he is despite the fact that his technique is very below average. Sigh…

  7. What a quirky system. A guy like Vincent Jackson can have 2 DWIs and still be a hot commodity while a lesser player like Jarret gets snipped for his first offense.
The league should probably make a universal policy concerning DWI/DUI so no double-standard exists…

  8. I’m good with that John.. just also add that if Dwayne hadn’t sucked on the field and failed to reach the potential that was imagined for him also added to him being tossed.
Braylon?? He’s not a top ten guy but he still makes plays and when Santonio comes back it will make D Coordinators choose who gets priority.

  9. why is it that nfl players keep driving when they drink lq when they see other nfl players get suspended every month
theres no more excuses for another nfl player to get a dui, call a friggin cab, seriously. Some of these nfl players dont realize that any little thing that is illegal can alter their nfl career like Jarrett..
    such a turd man

  10. I think he wanted to get busted just so he could be cut. It obv wasn’t working out for either side. The NFL is all about giving 2nd, 3rd, or 4th chances.
Good luck Dwayne, you’re going to need it.

  11. Doesn’t the NFL have a luxury car service available 24/7 for all players so DUI’s won’t happen???? No wonder he couldn’t learn the playbook……dumb.

Please re-read the first paragraph of the article. This was his second DUI, not his first.

  13. “I think he wanted to get busted just so he could be cut.”
A suspension probably won’t help him find another job

  14. “why is it that nfl players keep driving when they drink lq when they see other nfl players get suspended every month”

Because the majority of NFL players are nearly illiterate and if they couldn’t pass, run, or block they would be working in a 7-11 or a car wash.

  15. Panthers trade for Moss ( I scooped Glazer – and by that I mean I made it up faster than he did )

  16. Barn Yard animals and othe r cretins to all of you who have NEVER driven with enough in you to get in trouble Feel Free to Sound off …. The rest of us should shut up ( That ought to keeep it quiet in here )

    Dear Genius…
This is Mr Jarrett’s second DUI and well, he sucks as a wide out.

  18. randy moss, steve smith, deangelo williams, jonathan stewart.. The Panthers would have no reason to ever lose, i dont care who the qb is.

  19. Time for DJ to go somewhere that he can be given a legitimate shot. The Panthers don’t know how to use more than one wide receiver so he was doomed from the start here.
Kind of messed up, but this was the best thing that could’ve happened to him. Had this not happened he would have been sitting on the Panthers sideline twirling his tumbs and wasting more time.
Perhaps now some time will take a flyer on him for the league minimum and he can get one more crack, a legitimate shot at being a Pro. He was set up for failure in Charlotte.

  20. admit that you cut him because he sucks. i’m sure the two DUI’s didnt help his case, but steve smith knocked two of his teammates out and still has a job so lets not be a hypocrite coach.

Im a devoted panther fan that always felt good about DJ and believe me when i say he has some of the best hands in the NFL…but time after time he has proven to be lethargic and seemingly stupid. The panthers havent been the best at grooming WR’s but he is just to slow to get any seperation against a half decent CB. I always wanted to see him do well but theres just something with him, he just doesnt want it
