Moss trade “likely” to happen on Wednesday

After a crazy evening that started with an inadvertent tweet from ESPN’s Bill Simmons and accelerated dramatically when FOX’s Jay Glazer (who by all appearances was close to breaking the news at the time of Simmons’ accidental tweet) reported that a deal was indeed close, multiple reports have emerged indicating that the trade is expected to happen on Wednesday.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that the trade is “likely” to happen on Wednesday. Rapoport also confirmed our report that there have been no talks between the Vikings and Moss regarding a new contract.

Adam Schefter takes is a step farther. As a source close to the situation tells Schefter, “I’d be shocked if it doesn’t happen.” Schefter also confirms that there have been no contract talks between Moss and his new-old team.

The development comes only a few days after the one-year anniversary of Mike Freeman’s conclusion that Moss had returned to his “play when I wanna play” ways in New England. We speculated at the time (to the consternation of more than a few Patriots fans) that Moss possibly was angling for a return to Minnesota and a stint with quarterback Brett Favre.

When Moss grumbled six days before the start of the 2010 season about his situation in New England, I suggested to a good friend who shall remain nameless for present purposes that the Pats could still ship Moss to Minnesota. The good friend who shall remain nameless said it “never” would happen.

So while my calendar says that today is October 6, I’ve crossed that out and changed the date to “Never.”
